The Priming Of Arab-Israeli Stereotypes: How News Stories May Enhance Or Inhibit Audience Stereotypes, Erika Katherine Johnson
The Priming Of Arab-Israeli Stereotypes: How News Stories May Enhance Or Inhibit Audience Stereotypes, Erika Katherine Johnson
Journal of International Women's Studies
The goal of this study was to understand how news stories about Arab and Israeli women prime stereotypes in Americans, extending research on priming and ethnic media representation. A 2 (female target ethnicity: Arab and Israeli) x 3 (depiction type: prototypical, non-prototypical, and control) x 3 (multiple messages) mixed factorial design was conducted to examine how depiction and ethnicity in news story stimuli would interact with stereotype activation and accuracy (N = 107). Results showed that participants exhibited higher stereotyping after reading prototypical stories about Arab women and after they were not primed by stories. Also, participants who read non-prototypical …

Experiences Of Egyptian Female Journalists With Workplace Gender Discrimination, Mai Ismail
Experiences Of Egyptian Female Journalists With Workplace Gender Discrimination, Mai Ismail
Theses and Dissertations
There is an upward trend in the employment of women in the media worldwide and in the Middle East. Despite their growing presence, women working in the industry continue to experience discrimination, gendered practices and sexist attitudes at the workplaces. This study examines the experiences of Egyptian women journalists. It employs a qualitative approach, building on in-depth interviews conducted with twenty early- to mid-career Egyptian female journalists. These work in state-run, private and independent news organizations whether in print, broadcast or online media. The analysis shows that the experience of female journalists is linked to various factors pertaining to the …
Reporting On Reporters: Self-Perceptions Of Journalists Towards Their Job Identity In Private Newspapers In Egypt, Bassant Zein Aldin
Reporting On Reporters: Self-Perceptions Of Journalists Towards Their Job Identity In Private Newspapers In Egypt, Bassant Zein Aldin
Theses and Dissertations
The main target of this study is to draw a comprehensive portrait of self-perceptions among journalists towards their occupation, through applying the quantitative method of distributing surveys to gather and compare views from journalists working at the four major, most widely-read private newspapers in Egypt, namely: Al-Masry Al-Youm, Al-Shorouk, Al-Watan, and Al-Youm7. The researcher focuses on how journalists perceive their professional identity in terms of professional roles, professional autonomy, job satisfaction, psychological/mental well-being and the ideal self-image of professional journalists. The results showed that the two variables that distinctly affect the self-perception of journalists are the psychological/mental health they possess …

"Journalists are storytellers. And in the world God created, stories matter. Jesus spoke in parables more than sermons. He knew the best way to change behavior was through narrative not lecture."

Putting Ethnography On The Witness Stand: Review Of Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters, Janet K. Keeler
Putting Ethnography On The Witness Stand: Review Of Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters, Janet K. Keeler
The Qualitative Report
Lawyer, historian and author Steven Lubet’s Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters puts several well-known urban ethnographies on the figurative witness stand and finds that some don’t hold up to legal (and journalistic) scrutiny. The author encourages social science researchers to employ fact-checking techniques to increase the veracity of their work. While Lubet praises social science researchers for their altruistic missions and painstaking data collection in the field he finds follow-up research often lacking. He recognizes that ethnographers do not want to be the adversaries of marginalized subjects but believes that more rigorous vetting of data is crucial to the survival …
