Achieving Virtues And Perfections Of The Human Potential Of Women In The Quran, Sadat Moosavi Zohreh, Wan Zailan Kamaruddin Wan Ali

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Religious schools and communities have different opinions about the real perfection of women. Obviously, identifying the women's ultimate perfection has essential role to determine their fate and the fate of the human society. Among these schools, comprehensive Islamic law, which is originated from Divine revelation, has bestowed enormous status for women by paying great attention to women traits. According to the holy Quran, women are equal to men in terms of humanity. Certainly, there are a lot of wise genesis differences between men and women, but Divine revelations stresses that human truth and gender has no role in awarding guidance. …

The Politics Of Abortion Policy In The Heterogeneous "Muslim World", Anissa Helie Jan 2012

The Politics Of Abortion Policy In The Heterogeneous "Muslim World", Anissa Helie

Publications and Research

Legal frameworks inspired by Muslim jurisprudence (also referred to as Shari’a) regulate the lives of as many as 600 million women around the world, a majority of them living in Asia. Personal Status Codes or Family Codes impact various aspects of women’s status as citizens, professionals, wives, mothers, etc.

As in many other, non-Muslim contexts, questions linked to women’s bodies tend to generate fierce debates especially in the arena of reproductive rights. A number of women’s rights defenders from Muslim societies have noted that Family Codes often become more restrictive where conservative and/or extremist religious voices are able to influence, …

Islam And The Relation Of Science And The Qur'an, Mohd Yakub @ Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff, Majid Danehsgar

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The relation of science and religion is one of the most important interdisciplinary issues in the world from the past to the present. Any kinds of religion generally brought about a new challenging discussion with science; Islam and its scriptures are not exceptions in this case. The Qur'an as a main Islamic scripture has a direct relation with science and scientific matters according to many thinkers' declarations; it is obvious that there are opponents for this subject, on the other side. The purpose of this paper is to examine main categories of the relation of science and religion and then …

Comparing Fundamentalisms: A Social Movement Theory Approach, David Romney Aug 2011

Comparing Fundamentalisms: A Social Movement Theory Approach, David Romney

Student Works

The last forty years have witnessed the emergence of a number of Islamist and Jewish fundamentalist groups, resulting in a number of comparative studies that try to explain this phenomenon (e.g. Antoun and Hegland 1987; Sivan and Friedman 1990). Although scholars have argued varying reasons for this recent religious resurgence, most have recognized the importance of the 1967 war to both Jewish and Islamist fundamentalist movements. Some of these scholars see the religious resurgence following this war as a continuation of religious sentiments expressed by pre-1967 Zionist and fundamentalist Islamic groups rather than as a new movement (Davis 1987, 149-152).

Peace And War In The Qur'an And Juridical Literature: A Comparative Perspective, Liyakat Takim Jun 2011

Peace And War In The Qur'an And Juridical Literature: A Comparative Perspective, Liyakat Takim

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Qur'anic period of Islamic history took place in a social context of significant diversity. A number of important verses in the Qur'an reflect this diversity and encourage Islamic believers to seek peaceful coexistence with those of other faiths, especially those designated as "people of the Book," specifically Christians, Jews and Sabeans. In the later classical period of Islamic history, the exegesis of Islamic jurists markedly de-emphasized peaceful coexistence in favor of interpretations encouraging conquest and religious uniformity. Although the classical jurists have exercised enormous interpretive authority in subsequent Islamic history, their authority was never understood to be absolute or …

Islam Vs. Christianity: The Value And Sexuality Of Women In Islam Compared To The Value And Sexuality Of Women In The New Testament, Alane Marie Moore Apr 2011

Islam Vs. Christianity: The Value And Sexuality Of Women In Islam Compared To The Value And Sexuality Of Women In The New Testament, Alane Marie Moore

Masters Theses

A central concern in the public square is the devaluation or subjugation of a people using the shield of religion. It has become an expedient and nonchalant tool to abuse a certain class of people in the name of a higher power. Islam is no exception. Throughout the holy books of Islam, women are subjected to a life of oppression, one that is approved by Allah. While many are apt to point to Christianity as an example of the same devaluation of women, there are incredible differences between these two religions, and the holy books that dictate the treatment of …

Theurgy In The Medieval Islamic World: Conceptions Of Cosmology In Al-Būnī’S Doctrine Of The Divine Names, John Daniel Martin Iii Feb 2011

Theurgy In The Medieval Islamic World: Conceptions Of Cosmology In Al-Būnī’S Doctrine Of The Divine Names, John Daniel Martin Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The mystical cosmology set forth by Abu-l-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Yūsuf al-Qurashī al-Būnī (d. 622 / 1225) is of tremendous importance for understanding the development and application of the medieval Islamic occult sciences. In this thesis, we explore the concept and purpose of medieval Islamic theurgy as it is presented by al-Būnī. We will attempt to contextualize it within its complex and nuanced cosmology. His widely distributed and often banned work Shams al-maʿārif presents a challenge to even the most adept reader as it requires advanced understanding in an array of seemingly disparate subjects. This and other of al-Būnī’s …

The Issue Of Methodology Adopted By Mustafa Abdel-Raziq And Its Effects, Amina Abd-Allah

Theses and Dissertations

This academic thesis deals with the issue of methodology as used by Muṣṭafā Abdel-Rāziq (1885 - 1947). It is an issue that represents the essence of his academic philosophical thought. Muṣṭafā Abdel-Rāziq is considered one of the leading religious reformists, and he was the faithful disciple of f Muḥammad ʿAbdū, the second founder of this trend with Jamāl al- Dīn al-Afghanī. Muṣṭafā Abdel-Rāziq added a dimension of more breadth and accuracy by expanding on the contemporary range of general thought transforming it to an academic specialist thought. Abdel-Rāziq is the founder of the current academic discipline. This foundation is based …

Egyptians' Attitudes Toward Secularism, Nouran Omar, Norhan El-Araby, Sherine Samir

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This research study examined Egyptians' attitudes towards Egypt's possible evolution into a secular state. Our hypotheses were that Christianity, less religiosity in Islam, more religious tolerance, higher Westernization and more liberal thinking would predict more positive attitudes towards Egypt becoming a secular state. In addition, we conducted exploratory research on the demographics including gender and socio-economic status including education, to see whether they have a relationship with secularism attitudes. The convenience sample consisted of 234 individuals who completed a series of questionnaires either at an Internet website or on paper in our local neighborhoods. Our findings confirmed our hypotheses except …

Originally called East Pakistan, it was created during the partition of India in 1947 as the eastern wing of the country of Pakistan. Muhammad: Prophet Of God, Thora Qaddumi, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2011

Muhammad: Prophet Of God, Thora Qaddumi, Daniel C. Peterson

BYU Studies

Islamic studies scholar Daniel C. Peterson has written a small book that speaks volumes about the man who, in about the year AD 610, while meditating in a cave near Mecca in Arabia, received a prophetic call that led to the establishment of a religion that today is claimed by almost a quarter of the world's inhabitants. It adds to the growing body of research by Peterson and other Latter-day Saint scholars that strengthens the Church's role as a voice of reason in an area rife with misunderstandings and ignorance--the Islamic world.

Although written from a strongly academic and scholarly …

Petani Dan Pedagang: Perubahan Ekonomi Dan Agama Di Buton, Blair Palmer Jan 2011

Petani Dan Pedagang: Perubahan Ekonomi Dan Agama Di Buton, Blair Palmer

Antropologi Indonesia

This article examines a dispute over proper religious practice in an all-Muslim village in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi. Traditionalists and modernists disagree over whether agricultural ceremonies involving offerings for territorial spirits should be allowed to continue. Local views on this dispute are explored with reference to the historical context of religious practice in the village, and processes of social change over the past several generations. It is argued that key social, political and economic dynamics which are relevant to the current religious dispute include the decline of agriculture in the village, the eclipsing of the Butonese Sultanate and integration into the …

Abd Al-Rahman Jami's Lawami': A Translation Study, Marlene Rene Dubois May 2010

Abd Al-Rahman Jami's Lawami': A Translation Study, Marlene Rene Dubois

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation discusses a 13th century Arabic poem, the Khamriyya (Wine Ode) by `Umar Ibn al-Farid (576-632/1181-1235) and a 15th century Persian commentary Lawami': Sharh-i Khamriyyat-i Faridiyya (Sparks: Explanation of the Khamriyya of Ibn Farid) by `Abd al-Rahman Jami (817-898/1414-1492). It places Ibn al-Farid in a historical, religious and literary context, and discusses the imagery of wine-drinking in both pre-Islamic and Islamic thought. It addresses the philosophical connections that were made later between Ibn al-Farid and Ibn `Arabi (d. 637/1240), and aims to show how Jami, of the school of Ibn `Arabi, brings his own interpretive framework to his commentary …

Religion And Global Peace: The Instrumental Value Of Religion, Mohammad Manzoor Malik, Saim Kayadibi Feb 2010

Religion And Global Peace: The Instrumental Value Of Religion, Mohammad Manzoor Malik, Saim Kayadibi

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Religious believers claim their religions are peaceful and genuine believers are peacekeepers and peacemakers. In substantiating justification to their claim, they very often refer to religious scriptures. Yet, on the contrary, their claim is confronted by an opposite claim: many wars were fought and are being fought in the name of religion; and a great deal of violence can be ascribed to the religious believers. In addition, religious scriptures and history of religions do attest, to a certain extent, permissibility of using physical offence or defence. As a result, a question arises: Is the violence credited to religious believers, due …

Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein Jan 2010

Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The Christian community of Egypt dates back to the seventeenth century and comprises 12 per cent of the population today. As one of the oldest churches of the world, the Coptic Christian Church, first formed in Alexandria, has stood resilient and faithful to its traditions against intolerance, siege and persecutions. Having been present in most institutions of the state among the overwhelmingly Sunni-Muslim population, Copts are not new to the slow process of Islamization that Egypt has been undergoing for the last twenty years. What has been unique to the recent Coptic experience is the forced integration of Shari’a law …

Dying For Love: Homosexuality In The Middle East, Heather Simmons Jan 2010

Dying For Love: Homosexuality In The Middle East, Heather Simmons

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Today in the United States, the most frequent references to the Middle East are concerned with the War on Terrorism. However, there is another, hidden battle being waged: the war for human rights on the basis of sexuality. Homosexuality is a crime in many of the Middle Eastern states and is punishable by death in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iran (Ungar 2002). Chronic abuses and horrific incidences such as the 2009 systematic murders of hundreds of “gay” men in Iraq are seldom reported in the international media. Speculation as to why this population is hidden includes the …

Political Repression And Islam In Iran, Amy Kirk Jan 2010

Political Repression And Islam In Iran, Amy Kirk

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Signs with the slogan, ‘I am Neda’, flooded the streets of Tehran in the violent aftermath of the 2009 presidential elections and assassination of Neda Agha-Soltan. The internationally publicized video of Neda’s death became an iconic rallying point for the reformist opposition in Iran. Stringent clampdowns since the 1979 revolution have signified a sociopolitical change that has endured for three decades. President Khatami’s reform efforts of the late 1990s were stifled by Ahmadinejad’s election of 2005. Since Ahmadinejad’s appointment there has been little official tolerance for political and fundamental Islamic dissent, leading to serious human rights violations against the reformist …

Knowledge on Qira’at appeared when the al-Qur’an was revealed but many among us do not have this particular knowledge. In reality, this knowledge is closely associated with penalties and this reflects the significance of Qira’at. The main intention to introduce this subject of Qira’at is to expose to the public the importance of Qira’at as a source of knowledge with authenticity in Islam in tandem with the al-Qur’an. The main focus in this study is a comparison between two Qira’at for surah Yasin. This study is intended to introduce Qira’at Nafi‘ and Hafs and to gather more details on the …
