Inclusion, or the integration into mainstream classrooms of students with learning difficulties, should strive to make the students’ education sufficiently challenging while also making considerations for their particular capabilities and needs. A key aspect of inclusion is the requirement for appropriate support services and additional aids for both students and teachers. Digital media can be effective in helping to facilitate learning and can provide opportunities for engagement, peer learning, curriculum support and assessment. Over the last century, Irish traditional music, or “trad,” has become a global phenomenon that has flourished in communities from the United States of America to Japan. A musician need not be Irish in heritage to play and do justice to Irish traditional music or to feel a strong emotional connection to it; yet ethnic ties, real and imagined, constitute a powerful reason to play. This paper is based on The Works of Mary Birkett Card 1774 -1817, an edition of the manuscript collection made by her son Nathaniel Card in 1834. The collection contains different genres and spans Card's life from childhood to near her death, forming a unique record of one woman's experience at the tum of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Themes of self and identity, women's participation in public and private spheres, and ideological differences are apparent in Mary Birkett Card's struggle, in life and text, to become 'the ideal Quaker woman'. This dissertation examines Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (The Irish Musicians' Association) and its role in the politics of Irish traditional music communities. A revivalist organization founded in 1951, Comhaltas today is an educational and activist organization whose mission includes the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. Its numerous programs--from local music classes to a national festival drawing thousands of participants--intersect at some point with the musical lives of nearly every Irish traditional musician. Because of this widespread activity, Comhaltas interacts, often contentiously, with many of the different musical communities through which Irish traditional musicians define themselves both publically and privately. …

This research seeks to furthering understandings of how Tour Guides interpret memories at heritage sites when the memories at issue are difficult yet subtle and not always apparent to tourists. Specifically, it explores how Dublin Castle, formerly the seat of British rule in Ireland, is captured in narratives presented to tourists that often include Britons. Representing the site is made challenging because some visitors have little knowledge of the site's history, while others are well informed and hold strong political views. The findings show that Guides select largely depoliticized narratives, strongly influenced by their personal interests and experiences. Some hint …

The introduction of the Freedom of Information act in Ireland in 1997 was a profound change for a state, a civil service and political system far more comfortable with official secrets. It has had a transformational effect on relations between citizen and the state, and has been useful for journalists despite many challenges. After its introduction it was then amended, with high costs and limitations imposed. It has subsequently been amended again to restore much of its previous powers.

The destruction of St Mel’s Cathedral by fire brought the local community together to fund its restoration. Part of this initiative was the development of a lighting scheme using modern LEDs and intelligent lighting controls to recreate the atmosphere and reverence deserving of this historic house of worship. Problems encountered associated with the age and style of the building to be illuminated are discussed in the paper. A description of the design process and methodology is also included, along with the appropriate lighting conditions necessary to emphasize certain architectural points. This is an analysis of environmental ethics in current graphic design practice in Ireland. It investigates the most common obstacles, challenges and misconceptions that are presently being cited by Irish designers for not practising sustainably.

A mixed method approach of a survey and a series of semi-structured interviews, accompanied by a small scale case study of a best practice design studio led to the result that designers in Ireland are very interested in sustainability but certain obstacles hinder them from implementing sustainable solutions in their work practice. It is a truism to say that the Great Irish Famine of 1845 to 1852 brought enormous changes to Ireland. The impact of massive emigration, death and suffering of so many people changed Ireland and marks the separation from the 18th century from modernity. It was also a period of change for the press, whose journalists had to find ways to tell the story of the famine. This work, using the three Cork newspapers as its case study, argues that the methods developed in the late 1840s laid down the basis for disaster coverage to this day.

This paper describes the lighting design and rationale for the Mardyke Garden project. It is realised through accentuating the historic buildings and integrating the local biodiversity issues such as the park’s bat population. Many new modern structures have been added to this historic park such as a pavilion bandstand, called the “Pavilion of Light”, with colourchanging luminaries and in-ground, star-scape, fibreoptic lighting in the children’s play area.

The purpose of this study is to explore the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) scheme in Ireland and a child’s transition from a pre-school setting to the formal primary school environment, from the perspective of parents, pre-school practitioners, primary school teachers and childcare organisations. The ECCE initiative was introduced in January 2010 for all children between the ages of 3 years and 3 months and 4 years and 6 months, offering them one year of free pre-school (50/38 weeks) prior to commencing primary school. Introduction: Paediatric obesity has become a global epidemic with many countries developing strategies to help tackle its prevalence. School based physical activity (PA) and nutrition interventions have proven to play a promising role in tackling childhood obesity.

Background: Project Spraoi is an Irish primary school based intervention. The intervention was delivered to an intervention school to help enhance PA and nutritional behaviour amongst pupils. The intervention school was assigned an ‘Energizer’; a trained PA and nutrition change agent who worked with the school to achieve the objectives. For evaluation purposes a control school was recruited.
