Over the past 40 years, Ireland has experienced a remarkable transformation in fortunes. Its emergence from a protectionist pre-industrial to a post-industrial high-tech economy came on the coat tails of European Union membership and accelerating internationalisation and deregulation of financial and investment markets. Strategically situated between the United States and Europe, Ireland became a leading importer of foreign direct investment. By 2000, it was the second-largest exporter of computer software in the world after the US, and home to the top-10 pharmaceutical companies. The experience and views of men who have become stay-at-home fathers has been an area of research that has, only in recent decades, become popular to study. This study highlights that there is a dearth of literature from an Irish perspective and that little is known about the topic.
Internationally, research has shown that there appears to be a strong link between masculine identity and the realm of paid employment. It also shows that fathers struggle in their attempts to balance being involved fathers while maintaining a foothold in paid employment.

Retention In Computer Science: A Level 6 Experience In An Irish Third Level Institute., Jane Ferris

The current World economic recession has brought significant changes to the lives of many Irish citizens and brought many back into the education system. In 2010 in response to the need to provide retraining opportunities for the long term unemployed some third level institutes introduced re-training programmes. This paper describes the retention experience of a Computer Science department of an Irish third level institute managing level 6 part-time computing students. The paper reports the barriers for students in continuing on the programmes from exit interviews and identifies potential strategies to engage students in their chosen programmes.

This thesis explores the introduction of the Free Preschool Year (FPY) in Ireland from the early childhood 'educators' and 'policymakers' perspectives. Under the new FPY initiative introduced in 2010, all children between the ages of 3.2 - 4.7 are offered free preschool hours for a period of one year prior to their entrance into primary school. This research identified the need to study the introduction of FPY as research into this topic to date has been limited. Distributed or semi-distributed models are usually cascades of lumped models, each with an identical structure. This, classical, approach has a number of drawbacks; (i) each lumped model must be sufficiently general and thus complex to cope with the range of hydrological situations possible and (ii) it precludes debate and discussion between scientists about the most appropriate model conceptualisation and in particular it precludes using different conceptualisations in different areas to adapt the model to different hydrologic regimes, perhaps even in the same catchment. Until very recently, Ireland was spoken of in very adulatory terms, to the point of being dubbed the “Celtic Tiger.” However, the tiger is no more, having been consumed by a property-led boom, the collapse of which was compounded by the global financial crisis. Taking path dependence as lens, this article looks at an early sequence of events that shaped the country’s path to “tiger hood,” that is, the policy shift from protectionism to outward looking economic development. Fire risk assessments were carried out in 17 Nursing Homes in Ireland. The results show that fire safety management needed to be improved. The recommendations include the need for improved training, management and regulation for fire safety in nursing homes.

Restaurant chefs and owners have a potentially influential role to play in promoting the use of local foods and supporting producers. Indeed chefs are taste makers, and their conceptualization of local food can influence consumers’ perceptions, knowledge and geographical awareness. Yet their role is not well documented in research literature. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven purposively selected chefs in Galway City, Ireland, who are seeking to develop a local cuisine. Research indicates that due process and equitable reward distributions may be more appropriate in influencing attitudes in individualistic rather than collectivistic cultures. Hence, we examined the effects of perceptions of due process in performance appraisal and equity in reward systems on employee commitment and tenure intent among collectivist Indian and individualistic Irish employees. The results indicated that both procedural and distributive justice perceptions predicted affective commitment, normative commitment, and tenure intent among Irish employees. However, in the Indian sample, procedural justice perceptions predicted affective commitment and tenure intent but distributive justice perceptions did not predict these outcomes; also distributive justice …

The Winding Stair Restaurant is located at 40, Lower Ormond Quay Dublin on the north side of the river Liffey beside the Ha’penny Bridge. The proprietor is Elaine Murphy. The Winding Stair started life as a bookshop and café which was a popular meeting spot in Dublin during the 1970s and 1980s. The café closed in 2005 and in 2006 the current proprietor re-opened it as a restaurant.
