The Intangible Divide: Why Do So Few Firms Invest In Innovation?, James Bessen, Xiupeng Wang Oct 2024

The Intangible Divide: Why Do So Few Firms Invest In Innovation?, James Bessen, Xiupeng Wang

Faculty Scholarship

Investments in software, R&D, and advertising have grown rapidly, now approaching half of U.S. private nonresidential investment. Yet just a few hundred firms account for almost all this growth. Most firms, including many large ones, regularly invest little in capitalized software and R&D, and this "intangible divide" has surprisingly deepened as intangible prices have fallen relative to other assets. Using comprehensive US Census microdata, we document these patterns and explore a variety of factors associated with intangible investment. We find that firms invest significantly less in innovation-related intangibles when their rivals invest more. One firm's investment can obsolesce rivals' investments, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurse practitioners (NPs) face barriers to being innovative in healthcare because of a need for more resources, education, and cultural inclusion compared to physicians and researchers (Joseph et al., 2019). NPs are often disregarded from involvement in the innovation ecosystem and seen as solely end-users of new products and services (Davis & Glasgow, 2020). This Doctor of Nursing Practice project aimed to assess the impact of a 5-week innovation and intrapreneurship course on NPs' perceptions of their ability to innovate at a Midwest academic hospital. The aim was to address the known innovation education gap that NPs rarely receive. Using …

Policy Points The implementation of large-scale health care interventions relies on a shared vision, commitment to change, coordination across sites, and a spanning of siloed knowledge. Enablers of the system should include building an authorizing environment; providing relevant, meaningful, transparent, and timely data; designating and distributing leadership and decision making; and fostering the emergence of a learning culture. Attention to these four enablers can set up a positive feedback loop to foster positive change that can protect against the loss of key staff, the presence of lone disruptors, and the enervating effects of uncertainty. As well, we suggest that employee green values moderate these relationships. Furthermore, the positive effects on employee creativity (green and general) are theorized to increase organizational innovation, which positively impacts organizational performance. This paper extends the research by providing a …
