Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.

Fibril In Senile Systemic Amyloidosis Is Derived From Normal Transthyretin., Per Westermark, Knut Sletten, Bjorn Johansson, Gibbons G. Cornwell
Dartmouth Scholarship
The amyloid fibril in senile systemic amyloidosis (SSA), like that of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy, is derived from transthyretin (TTR). SSA, however, is a common disease, affecting to some degree 25% of the population greater than 80 years old. In familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy, the amyloidogenesis has been considered to depend on point mutations leading to TTR variants. We show that the TTR molecule in SSA, on the other hand, has a normal primary structure. Factors other than the primary structure of TTR must therefore be important in the pathogenesis of TTR-derived amyloid.
Effects Of Methylene Chloride On Immune Function In Mice And The In Vitro Effect Of Methylene Chloride In Immunologic Assays, Man-Ping Wang
Effects Of Methylene Chloride On Immune Function In Mice And The In Vitro Effect Of Methylene Chloride In Immunologic Assays, Man-Ping Wang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A number of toxicities associated with methylene chloride have been found in both human subjects and mice. However, relatively few studies have probed immunotoxicities of methylene chloride. In order to examine possible immunotoxicities or immunomodulating effects of methylene chloride, several tests of cellular immune function were performed using both human in in vitro studies and a mouse model.
Body weights and specific organ weights of thymus, spleen, liver, and kidney were normal in CD-1 mice given various concentrations of methylenechloride. However, a significantly reduced mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA} and reduced interleukin-2 (IL-2} production was found in these methylene-chloride-treated mice. …
Interleukin 2 Regulates Its Own Receptors., Kendall A. Smith, Doreen A. Cantrell
Interleukin 2 Regulates Its Own Receptors., Kendall A. Smith, Doreen A. Cantrell
Dartmouth Scholarship
The cell surface density of high-affinity membrane receptors for the T-lymphocytotrophic hormone interleukin 2 (IL-2) determines the rate of T-cell-cycle progression. Since 10-fold greater numbers of IL-2 receptor molecules were found by using a radiolabeled monoclonal antibody reactive with IL-2 receptors (anti-Tac) compared with binding of IL-2, the functional relationship of the binding sites recognized by both of these ligands was assessed. In the presence of cycloheximide, IL-2 binding sites declined with a half-time (t1/2) of 2.6 hr, whereas the decay of anti-Tac binding sites was much slower (t 1/2 = 6.4 hr). Moreover, after limited membrane proteolysis, the half-time …
