Ovid Butler And The Founding Of Butler University, Sally Childs-Helton Jan 2010

Ovid Butler And The Founding Of Butler University, Sally Childs-Helton

Scholarship and Professional Work

Without Ovid Butler, there would be no Butler University today. The history of the man and the university are intimately and inextricably entwined; without Ovid Butler's vision, leadership, and financial support, the university may not have come into being, or survived its early years. One hundred and sixty years after it was chartered, Butler University today is a private, not-for-profit, comprehensive university located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Butler offers more than 65 majors from six colleges: Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education, Pharmacy, Business, Fine Arts, and Communication. The unofficial fall semester 2010 enrollment is 4,051 full-time undergraduates and 4,575 total students …

Ideas, Interests And Institutions And The History Of Canadian Bankruptcy Law 1867-1880, Thomas G. W. Telfer Jan 2010

Ideas, Interests And Institutions And The History Of Canadian Bankruptcy Law 1867-1880, Thomas G. W. Telfer

Law Publications

Michael Trebilcock's scholarship has long recognized the importance of ideas, interests, and institutions in shaping policy. Taking the same analytical approach that Michael Trebilcock and Ninette Kelley use in their ground-breaking book on the history of Canadian immigration, which focuses on economic interests, contested ideas, and institutions, this article examines the Canadian historical experience to gain an understanding of the ideas, interests, and institutions that have been influential in shaping the evolution of Canadian bankruptcy law. Specifically, the article addresses the rise of Canadian bankruptcy legislation in the early post-Confederation period and its ultimate repeal in 1880. Bankruptcy law represented …

Running On Full: The Story Of Ruth And Ruby Crawford, Neil Wilkinson Jan 2010

Running On Full: The Story Of Ruth And Ruby Crawford, Neil Wilkinson

KSU Press Legacy Project

"Running of Full" is a well-written account of twin sisters, Ruth and Ruby Crawford, who in their long lives made marks in every field of endeavor they undertook. Through the proverbial glass ceilings in law, banking, accounting, they rose to be among the first women bank officers in the country. Their stewardship and devotion to community and national causes, like the Humane Society, are legend. Often called "the 24-hour Crawfords," Ruth and Ruby were known as much for their prodigious energy as they were for their wit and charm.

Anti-Androgyne Feminist Analysis Of The Fin-De-Siecle Androgyne And The Hermaphrodite As A Radical Queer Employment In Visual Culture, Lauren Ondercin Edwards

Theses & ETDs

The fin-de-sicle was a time of social upheaval, especially for men faced with changing gender relations and the rise of feminism. Two figures which arose from this male anxiety about changing gender roles are the Androgyne and the Hermaphrodite. The first part of this paper examines the specific ways that the finde-sicle Androgynea supposedly asexual, transcendent, feminized male figurereassures male superiority over women by maintaining power in male the male body and excluding women from creativity and eroticism. I then compare the Western conception of the Androgyne to another literary and artistic figure, the Hermaphrodite, as depicted by Decadent artists …

Who Am I? Exploring Family And Identity In Contemporary American Fiction, Maximina J. Castillo Jan 2010

Who Am I? Exploring Family And Identity In Contemporary American Fiction, Maximina J. Castillo

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores literary representations of family and the struggle for identity in contemporary American fiction. Characters find personality options within their families, but must also try to seek more positive models in the wider world. Focusing on six novels, the thesis deals with the process of developing a sense of self, the ways in which family identity creates a foundation, the limitations for each character, alternative models of identity outside the family, and what this process ultimately yields for the character. The first chapter, on Dorothy Allisons Bastard Out of Carolina (1992), considers the uncertainty of self that a …
