The Ascension Of Yahweh: The Origins And Development Of Israelite Monotheism From The Afrasan To Josiah, Andrew Halladay
Pomona Senior Theses
INTRODUCTION: THE SEARCH FOR THE GOD OF ABRAHAM TEXT AND HISTORY: THE FORMATION OF THE ABRAHAMIC DEITY Recent years have seen substantial changes in the study of ancient Israelite religion. These changes have created ample work for scholars of religious studies and related fields as virtually all disciplines have something to say about recent archaeological and scholarly developments concerning Yahwism and its early development. In this scholarly milieu, it is difficult to present anything that is wholly new, but certainly possible to enter a spirited discourse about ancient questions. To discuss the origins and evolution of the Abrahamic deity—as I …

The Great Depression: Catalyst For Change In America's Game, Lauren M. Vorel
Constructing the Past
The Great Depression devastated countries around the world socially, culturally, and economically. In the United States, nearly all aspects of culture were affected, including leisure and recreation. America's pastime, baseball, was hit hard by the decrease in attendance that resulted from widespread unemployment and financial difficulties. In response to the downturn, professional baseball made several innovations to the game in an attempt to bring in more revenue. In this essay, I will attempt to prove that the Great Depression, though economically devastating, resulted in the modernization of the game of baseball.
Napoleon Bonaparte’S Concordat And The French Revolution, Kristen A. Hosack
Napoleon Bonaparte’S Concordat And The French Revolution, Kristen A. Hosack
Constructing the Past
In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte and Pope Pius XVII signed an agreement called the Concordat, which was an agreement between the French state and the Catholic Church that reconciled the Church with the anti-religious policies established during the French Revolution. This paper discusses the conflicting viewpoints held by various historians concerning the legacy of the Concordat; that is, did the agreement fulfill the religious goals of the early revolutionaries or did it betray their ideals? Ultimately, the paper concludes that the Concordat did indeed uphold the religious principles established during the early stages of the Revolution.

Sketches At Home And Abroad: A Critical Edition Of Selections From The Writings Of Nathaniel Parker Willis, Jon Miller, Nathaniel Parker Willis
Sketches At Home And Abroad: A Critical Edition Of Selections From The Writings Of Nathaniel Parker Willis, Jon Miller, Nathaniel Parker Willis
University of Akron Press Publications
Critics and general readers highly regarded the poetry and prose of Nathaniel Parker Willis (18061867) during the "American Renaissance" of creative literature in the decades before the Civil War. As an editor and frequent contributor to one of the young nation's most successful and elegant literary magazines, The New-York Mirror, Willis achieved an international reputation for his witty and worldly tales and letters.
This new edition collects outstanding examples of Willis's short fiction written at the peak of his abilities. These tales of adventure embellish and improve Willis's own experience as a bachelor adventurer during the 1830s, relating, for example, …
History Of Petroleum Engineering At Montana Tech, Leo Heath, Debbie Todd
History Of Petroleum Engineering At Montana Tech, Leo Heath, Debbie Todd
Petroleum Engineering
In January, 2010, the Petroleum Engineering department at Montana Tech moved into a new building, the Natural Resources Building, to start a new chapter in the history of the program on campus. Occupying a new building is a positive event, and it coincides with a surge of student enrollment which is prompted by industry needs and world energy demand. This time of new facilities and growing student numbers leads to the question of what the future has in store for the department. It also leads to reflection about where the department has been in the past. This history is a …

The Wall Paintings Of Tell El-Dab’A: Potential Aegean Connections, Sara Cole
The Wall Paintings Of Tell El-Dab’A: Potential Aegean Connections, Sara Cole
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In 1991 Manfred Bietak discovered wall paintings produced in the Aegean style with Aegean techniques at the Egyptian Delta site of Tell el-Dab’a, or ancient Avaris. These paintings date to Egypt’s 18th Dynasty (c.1550-1069 B.C.) and were found in a palatial context. A close examination of the paintings regarding materials and techniques, iconography, style and context sheds new light on the relationship between Egypt and the Aegean world during the 2nd millennium B.C. Additionally, it provides increased support for a system of an elite shared cultural koiné in the eastern Mediterranean during this time, which the elites of each culture …
Always The Backbone, Rarely The Leader: Black Women Activists And The Reconceptualization Of Respectability During The 1960 Nashville Sit-In Movement, Amanda Hughett
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In 1960 Nashville, change came from an unexpected place. Black college women renounced the protective environment of their campuses to participate in, and often lead, civil rights demonstrations alongside their black brothers. Yet, these black women’s valiant actions were not initially met with praise and gratitude from the city’s black community, who feared the women’s new radical behaviors transgressed the gendered boundaries of middle class respectability. Supportive male leaders claimed these young women’s actions were simply extensions of traditionally respectable black female attributes. Through the framework established by supportive male leaders, black college women continued to challenge and succeeded in …

Imam, Shah, And Ayatollah: Charismatic Leadership In The Shi'i Tradition, And Its Role In Iran's Shi'ite Revolutions, Jonathon Case Henderson
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the role of charismatic religious leadership in Iran’s two Shi’ite revolutions. Included within the larger arguments of this work, are sections addressing the scholastic categorizations of charisma, the development of the Shi’i Islamic tradition, and they way in which the charisma of the was appropriated by later Shi’i figures to bring about social, political, and religious revolutions in Iran. For this work, Shah Isma’il ibn Haydar and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini serve as examples of charismatic Shi’i figures that drew upon the suspended charisma of the Shi’i Imams. This work also briefly comments on events in contemporary Iran …

Meeting Saint Vincent's Challenge In Providing Assistance To The Foreign-Born Poor: Applying The Lessons To The Asylum And Immigration Law Clinic, Sioban Albiol J.D.
Meeting Saint Vincent's Challenge In Providing Assistance To The Foreign-Born Poor: Applying The Lessons To The Asylum And Immigration Law Clinic, Sioban Albiol J.D.
Vincentian Studies
The Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic of DePaul College of Law furthers Vincent de Paul’s mission of caring for poor persons. It extends the protection of the law to low-income immigrants and asylum seekers by giving them access to legal advice that they so often lack. Background on US immigration law and its punitive effects on the poor is provided. Catholic social teaching with regard to immigration is summarized. Vincent de Paul was a migrant himself, and his approach to missions and other works indicates his special concern for foreigners. An important comparison is made between Vincent’s extension of access …

Vincentian Education: A Survey Of Its History, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Education: A Survey Of Its History, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
From its beginning, the Congregation has worked in education, although until recently this was seen to conflict with its primary focus on missions. However, its involvement began with Vincent de Paul’s interest in instructing poor persons in religion. Vincent was also concerned with the reform of the clergy, so the Congregation became heavily committed to seminaries. Seminaries became especially important to the rebuilding of the French church after the Revolution. After the Jesuits’ suppression, the Vincentians took over many of their secondary schools and replaced the Jesuits at universities. In many international missions, the Vincentians intended to start seminaries but …

Education With A Heart, Gregorio L. Banaga Jr., C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Gregorio Banaga explains how Catholic education in the Philippines created and became limited to the elite. He describes the history of Adamson University and what it is doing to increase poor persons’ access to education, raise students’ awareness of poverty, and create motivation for social change. Adamson fosters social responsibility and has made service part of all students’ learning. All of this is part of Banaga’s definition of Vincentian education, which he says is “of the poor, from the poor, with the poor, and for the poor.” In addition to the actions mentioned above, this philosophy requires the university to …
