Peddlers, Merchants, and Manufacturers: How Jewish Entrepreneurs Built Economy and Community in Upcountry South Carolina by Furman University professor emerita Diane Catherine Vecchio weaves the story of Jewish innovation and business in the Upstate from the antebellum period to the modern day. Largely focusing on Greenville and Spartanburg, the book follows Upstate Jewish communities as they helped shape the state’s economy for over a hundred years.

That's especially true if you have been schlepping eight college students across Western China, as I had been for the past week. Military Roads And King's Houses: Spaces Of Conflict, Mobility And Cultural Assimiliation In The Scottish Highlands, Daniel Maudlin

Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources pertainingto military roads and King’s Houses, this paper highlights thesignificance of space and material culture during the century ofconflict, mobility, and cultural assimilation that drew the ScottishHighlands and Gaelic culture into the nation-state of GreatBritain. The original fieldwork presented here locates, identifies,and analyzes lost inns known as King’s Houses, governmentownedinns established along military roads constructed by theBritish army throughout the eighteenth century. King’s Houseswere central to the narrative of Highland Scotland as a site of bothimprovement and internal colonialism within the British Isles.

Helicobacter pylori disturbs the stomach lining during long-term colonization of its human host, with sequelae including ulcers and gastric cancer1,2. Numerous H. pylori virulence factors have been identified, showing extensive geographic variation1. Here we identify a ‘Hardy’ ecospecies of H. pylori that shares the ancestry of ‘Ubiquitous’ H. pylori from the same region in most of the genome but has nearly fixed single-nucleotide polymorphism differences in 100 genes, many of which encode outer membrane proteins and host interaction factors. Most Hardy strains have a second urease, which uses iron as a cofactor rather than …

The study discussed the city of Yanbu Al-Nakhl, as a station on the Egyptian pilgrims’ route, by highlighting the observations documented by the historian Abdul Qadir Al -Jaziri in his book titled “The Unique and Organized Pearls in in the News of the Pilgrims and the Route to Holy Makkah”. It elucidated the security conditions in Yanbu Al-Nakhl and its impact on the passage of pilgrimage convoys, and by highlighting the economic and social impact of the pilgrimage (Hajj) on Yanbu Al-Nakhl. This study descriptively and analytically addressed the information about the urban heritage in Riyadh documented by the Italian Marcello Mocchi in his journey to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1359 AH/1941 AD, by illustrating the factors affecting the architectural heritage of the city and studying its urban and architectural characteristics, as well as presenting examples of heritage palaces in the city. Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016: Objective: To describe the transition of Tau Alpha Chapter through past, present and future. The vision of a Mexican Nursing Leader Esther C. Gallegos, PhD, FAAN was created the Honor Society of Nursing in the School of Nursing at Univesidad Autonoma de Nuevo Len in Monterrey, Nuevo Len, Mexico in 2002. Dr. Gallegos and her team worked very hard to create first the Honor Society and second the Chapter. To created the STTI chapter in Mexico, it was work of many nurses, mexican and from US. The History Behind El Silbón: Exploring Historical And Psychological Elements To The Urban Legend, Valentina S. Bonilla

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Abstract

The urban legend of El Silbón has been present in Venezuelan folklore for centuries. Even though the story is predominantly regarded as a ghost story to scare children, it hides many elements from the historical context of when it started to be popularized around the country. With a beginning in Los Llanos (The Plains) of Venezuela, El Silbón reflects the effect that factors such as the Independence War and economic disparity had on the population and exemplifies the purpose of Oral Tradition of sharing communal experiences and values with the future generations.

This essay by Caleb Troy Horton provides a brief history of the Providence, Rhode Island, African American Community and their involvement in the Dorr Rebellion.

The essay recounts the actions of the Rhode Island Anti-Slavery Society, its members, and Rhode Island Black leaders—headquartered in Providence—during the conflict that ultimately, through their agency, granted Black men suffrage in the 1842 Rhode Island State Constitution (a.k.a. the Law and Order Constitution) enacted in May 1843.
