The Fiery Cross: The Klan's Fight To Save America, Andy M. Kozlowski Apr 2012

The Fiery Cross: The Klan's Fight To Save America, Andy M. Kozlowski

Constructing the Past

The Fiery Cross, published monthly by the Ku Klux Klan out of its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, took it upon itself to address all of these growing issues. Through this periodical, the KKK was determined to spread its own views: opposition to the New Deal and its Communist-like programs, anti-immigration, and opposition to American involvement in the European war. In its publication, the Ku Klux Klan preached about the creation of an America for Americans only.

Apple Vs. Microsoft: Which One Is Better? A Historical And Technical Comparison Of Two Companies, Philip Thorpe

Senior Seminars

With this paper, the goal is to help define between Apple and Microsoft which one was better. The focus of research started with a brief introduction into the GUI, and how that evolved into what Windows and Apple created. This was broken down into the changes they made in their operating systems, what type of hardware requirements were needed to run the operating systems, how these two companies made changes in comparison or in response to each other, and how much market they share among personal computers and operating systems. With the information provided, an unknown user could make a …

The Final Journey Of The Saturn V, Andrew R. Thomas, Paul N. Thomarios Apr 2012

The Final Journey Of The Saturn V, Andrew R. Thomas, Paul N. Thomarios

University of Akron Press Publications

The Saturn V rocket carried men to the moon, and its history reflects the US space program's rise, success, and demise. In 1961, John F. Kennedy challenged America to put a man on the moon and win the space race. Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon in 1969 in the culmination of a concerted scientific and technological effort.

A little over a decade later, the Saturn rocket was tossed aside to rot in a field near the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket's carcass became the home to flora and fauna. Like the space program itself, the rocket …

A Dark Place Of The Earth: London And The Roots Of Urban Gothic, Terri Strong Apr 2012

A Dark Place Of The Earth: London And The Roots Of Urban Gothic, Terri Strong

2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

In the late Victorian era a new type of novel appeared. Dark and creepy, filled with supernatural creatures and twisted, sometimes violent plots, it resembled its Gothic predecessor of 200 years earlier. Building on the standard elements of the Gothic novel, this new fiction pierced the heart of the city. As the new genre brought the terror of Gothic fiction from isolated castles into the streets, it found its first home in the fog-shrouded city at the center of the Victorian age. Urban Gothic was rooted firmly in the soil of London.

The End Of Her, Kerry Alexander Apr 2012

The End Of Her, Kerry Alexander

English Honors Projects

The End of Her is a collection of poetry that centers on ideas of celebrity, nostalgia, pain and healing, and collective memory. The poems depict the lives and times of tragic women: from Eve to Amy Winehouse. The project touches on both the real and the imagined in examining what it means to be famously tragic, as well as what it means to be a spectator of demise. Interwoven autobiographical pieces reveal the relationship between individual memory and shared history, as the collection positions personal accounts of love and loss in conversation with some of the world’s best-known stories.

Yick Wo At 125: Four Simple Lessons For The Contemporary Supreme Court, Marie A. Failinger Apr 2012

Yick Wo At 125: Four Simple Lessons For The Contemporary Supreme Court, Marie A. Failinger

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The 125th anniversary of Yick Wo v. Hopkins is an important opportunity to recognize the pervasive role of law in oppressive treatment of Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is also a good opportunity for the Supreme Court to reflect on four important lessons gleaned from Yick Wo. First, the Court should never lend justification to the evil of class discrimination, even if it has to decline to rule in a case. Second, where there is persistent discrimination against a minority group, the Court must be similarly persistent in fighting it. Third, the Court needs to take …

Latent Crusaders: Narrative Strategies Of Survival In Early Modern Danubian Principalities, 1550-1750, Caius Dobrescu, Sorin Adam Matei Apr 2012

Latent Crusaders: Narrative Strategies Of Survival In Early Modern Danubian Principalities, 1550-1750, Caius Dobrescu, Sorin Adam Matei

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The essay concentrates on a master narrative strategy presiding over the early emergence of modernity in the area in which contemporary Romania is situated. This narrative strategy richly illustrates the neoByzantine survival strategies of the Greek elites who ruled the Danubian Principalities (Moldova and Valahia) during the earlier stages of Romanian modernization (18th century). Early modem Romanian political and intellectual elites borrowed from the post-Byzantine political theology a set of Gnostic-inflected narrative strategies to explain their subordination to alien powers (Turkish, Ottoman, Russian, Austrian, or Hungarian). These strategies operated a reversal of "real" and "unreal" or of "essential" and "fleeting" …

Imagine This: An Object Starting A Revolution: The Radio, Exiled Voice, And The Mute Poet In Communist Romania, Irina Popescu Apr 2012

Imagine This: An Object Starting A Revolution: The Radio, Exiled Voice, And The Mute Poet In Communist Romania, Irina Popescu

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This paper analyzes the role played by Radio Free Europe in redistributing sound inside Romania, a country which experienced one of the most repressive communist regimes in Eastern Europe. By following the work of Monica Lovinescu, a cultural critic and writer, and Ana Blandiana, a poet, and leaning heavily on the theoretical framework provided by Giorgio Agamben, this paper uncovers the potential of disembodied voices. Voice, therefore, drives the revolution, providing the Romanian population with a means of escape, a means with which to reclaim their words and thus begin making demands for change. Two types of sounds/voices will be …

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk Apr 2012

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1958, the Canadian Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) completed a draft of a major text on redemption. He stated that the text was to be an addition to his book De Verbo Incarnato, with the purpose of explaining the historical causality of Christ. The Lonergan Research Institute, Toronto, has produced a preliminary English translation titled The Redemption: A Supplement to De Verbo Incarnato. To date, there has been no interpretation of this text. This dissertation aims at making a contribution towards the remedy of this lacuna in Lonergan studies. The dissertation interprets Lonergan's understanding of the historical causality of …
