The People Versus The Octopus: California Progressives And The Origins Of Direct Democracy, Glen Gendzel
The People Versus The Octopus: California Progressives And The Origins Of Direct Democracy, Glen Gendzel
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Direct democracy, for better or for worse, has become California's most distinctive and emblematic political institution. Initiative, referendum, and recall elections were added to the state constitution in 1911 as part of Governor Hiram Johnson's “progressive” movement, which redeemed the state from control by “The Octopus”, meaning the Southern Pacific Railroad monopoly that had a stranglehold on the state's economy and government. Progressive reformers expected that California voters would use direct democracy to tame the Octopus and to protect themselves against such wealthy special interests in the future. Over time, however, those same interests proved adept at using direct democracy …

2013 Dewey Lecture: College—What Is It Good For?, David F. Labaree
Education and Culture
In this 2013 John Dewey Society Lecture I examine the history and the structure of the American system of higher education. I argue that the true hero of the story is the evolved form of the American university and that all the things we love about it, like free speech, are the side effects of a structure that arose for other purposes. I tell this story in three parts. First I explore how the American system of higher education emerged in the nineteenth century, without a plan and without any apparent promise that it would turn out well. Then I …

Material Culture: A Review Of The 2013 Oxford Symposium On Food And Cookery, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
The focus of this year’s Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery was on the stew stove not the stew; the knives not the meat; the salt pots or ‘nefs’ rather than the salt; the ‘chasen’ not the tea; the plates (whether pewter, ceramic, delftware, china, silver or gold) but not their food contents. We were gathered to discuss associated material culture of food and cookery rather than the perishable ephemeral substance that usually concerns this gathering now in its thirty-first year.
So, what did the 220 chefs, food historians, writers, scientists, anthropologists and general foodies learn from the weekend’s discussion …

Pittsburgh's Response To Deindustrialization: Renaissance, Renewal And Recovery, 1946-1999, Mariel P. Isaacson
Pittsburgh's Response To Deindustrialization: Renaissance, Renewal And Recovery, 1946-1999, Mariel P. Isaacson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Pittsburgh was able to gradually ease its transition into a post-industrial economy in the second half of the twentieth century because of an elite-driven planning movement known as the Pittsburgh Renaissance. The Renaissance first addressed the physical failings of the city and sought state legislation that would support further urban redevelopment immediately following World War II. While the physical improvements were underway, Renaissance organizers began working with the University of Pittsburgh to upgrade Pitt's educational and recreational facilities so that it would become an engine for the city's future economic growth. City support for improved facilities, especially those pertaining to …

Guide To Ac024 - Chicago-Kent College Of Law Buildings Collection, Jona Whipple
Finding Aids
Chicago-Kent College of Law has been located in the city of Chicago since its founding in 1888. The first location of the school was the Grand Pacific Hotel, located on Clark Street and Jackson Boulevard, in downtown Chicago. Classes for what was then known as the “Chicago Evening School of Law” began in January of 1888 and were held on the second floor in the Appellate Court rooms. In 1889, having outgrown the Grand Pacific Hotel, the Appellate Court was moved to the fourth floor of the Grand Opera House at 119-21 N. Clark Street. The law school underwent two …
