In an era where the youth were obsessed with an appearance of success and being hip, when Coke finally altered its New Coke brand identity to appeal to the youth, they still could not make the youth accept New Coke. In the end when Coke had the chance to market to the trendy Generation X in 1985, they focused on taste instead of adapting the brand to fit youth trends. When they finally changed the strategy to appeal to the youth, it was far too late. The “smart shoppers” of the 1980s had already identified New Coke as a failure …

Shifting Understandings Of Lesbianism In Imperial And Weimar Germany, Meghan C. Paradis
Shifting Understandings Of Lesbianism In Imperial And Weimar Germany, Meghan C. Paradis
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
This paper seeks to understand how, and why, understandings of lesbianism shifted in Germany over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through close readings of both popular cultural productions and medical and psychological texts produced within the context of Imperial and Weimar Germany, this paper explores the changing nature of understandings of homosexuality in women, arguing that over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the dominant conceptualization of lesbianism transformed from an understanding of lesbians that was rooted in biology and viewed lesbians as physically masculine “gender inverts”, to one that was …

Active Learning, Primary Documents, And Complex Events: Reinvigorating History Education, Samantha Clonch
Honors Projects
History is frequently taught through lectures, tests, and individual work with primary documents, which can be exceedingly tedious for students. This is problematic because it leads to student disengagement and limited learning. Also problematic in history education is the lack of time spent teaching events which are viewed as less impactful than others on the course of history. The Louisiana Purchase is one such event. It is often taught in one day or less as an action that simply doubled the size of the United States. This project is an attempt to combat these problems. The project contains a seven …

German Women In The Wild West: Contradiction In Post-Wwii Gender Roles, Romy Franks
German Women In The Wild West: Contradiction In Post-Wwii Gender Roles, Romy Franks
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
While postwar German women were portrayed as gritty and strong from their lived experiences, West German newspapers articles reiterated the contradictory roles proffered to women in German society. Rather than speaking up against the genre’s masculine dominance, popular western novels, films, and the press continued to reinforce widely held opinions and norms by encouraging women to be content with the ideal female character offered them.

St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Article’s historical chronicle provides a valuable backdrop for an examination of Title VII. Part II analyzes Title VII’s impact on race relations in the workplace and society. While progress has been made in the effort to provide equal opportunities for all workplace employees, Title VII legislation has not eliminated employment discrimination. As Title VII marches toward its sixtieth anniversary, this Article’s final section, Part III, reviews unconscious bias and other current challenges preventing Title VII from reaching its true potential.
Filling Out Internment: The Need For Honouliuli's Inclusion In Internment Studies, Trey M. Muraoka
Filling Out Internment: The Need For Honouliuli's Inclusion In Internment Studies, Trey M. Muraoka
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
Opened in 1943, the Hononuliuli camp was the lone permanent internment camp during World War II for Japanese in Hawaii. Following its closure, the camp was lost in history and went unstudied for many years. In 1998, a news reporter opened the public’s eye to the camp and began a re-investigation of the camp. Using a former prisoner’s diary, other prisoners’ interviews and memories, this paper makes the case for Honouliuli’s inclusion in the greater internment corpus. By analyzing various factors of Honouliuli compared to the various camps in the continental United States, we can see similarities and differences. From …
Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright
Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
The discovery of the atom and its associated components and properties paved the way for laying the foundation of chemistry related knowledge. However, the historical discoveries of each individual component are often forgotten or ignored due to the students‰Ûª innate belief of it ‰Û÷being difficult‰Ûª to remember such specific information. To assist students with grasping the properties of the atom and its components, a timeline-assisted chronology of atomic discoveries was created. Our objective is to present the scientists, with their individual contributions to atomic theory, along with the year it was discovered in an interactive manner. Using this timeline, students …

When Sarah Lynch enrolled at Gardner-Webb University, she already carried a love and curiosity for history and museums. Her professors at GWU have deepened that interest through engaging classes, connections with local historians and internships in multiple museums near campus. As part of her studies, Lynch has explored the history of Gardner-Webb and the Town of Boiling Springs, through documents, artifacts and storytellers who have offered insight into the community’s formation and growth, local churches and businesses, artisans and the University.

The Care For The Dying: A Critical Historical Analysis Of Occupational Therapy In Hospice., Marion Russell, Angela Bahle-Lampe
The Care For The Dying: A Critical Historical Analysis Of Occupational Therapy In Hospice., Marion Russell, Angela Bahle-Lampe
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This paper presents an historical analysis of occupational therapy’s role in hospice care with relation to past and current hospice practices, as well as cultural forces that impact that role. Since the beginning of the movement, hospice has developed into a strong component of end-of-life care, and occupational therapy practice models and interventions are unique in addressing the occupational needs of clients during this stage of life. Despite compelling evidence of the positive impact of employing occupational therapists, there continue to be significant barriers to implementation of services. The author proposes that the concept of occupation, as experienced at the …
