Cool Notes In An Invisible War: The Use Of Radio And Music In The Cold War From 1953 To 1968, Matthew R. Crooker
Cool Notes In An Invisible War: The Use Of Radio And Music In The Cold War From 1953 To 1968, Matthew R. Crooker

The current status of the literature involving radio broadcasts and music from the Cold War delves into either one area of concentration or the other. That is, either historians have little to no mention of radio, or historians explore music without mentioning radio. There are no studies that solely focus on the use of radio and music in combination with one another. This is what the thesis offers to this area of concentration. In addition to examining the use of radio and music in combination with one another, this work delves into radio directly after the conclusion of the Second …

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman
Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The practice of gleaning began as a way for the poor to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Changes in societal ideas about private property as well as a shift toward a neoliberal style of governance have caused gleaning to become what it is today: a practice primarily undertaken by charitable organizations, nonprofits, and church groups who then donate their bounty to local food banks, providing fresh produce to the food insecure. In modern society, gleaning is often held up as a single solution to the problems of food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. This thesis complicates that …
Women Rising: The American Revolution And Evangelical Thought, Roxanne Reinhardt
Women Rising: The American Revolution And Evangelical Thought, Roxanne Reinhardt
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This project explores the events leading up to the American Revolution such as the Great Awakening and the Seven Years War through the works of Hannah Heaton and Esther Edwards Burr's diaries, as well as Sarah Osborn's writing. Thus, by looking at the religious views of women during this time, this paper explains the trend of revivalist and evangelical uprisings and the religious break from authority for marginalized members of society. This paper argues that female evangelicals found religion and prayer an active way to participate and promote themselves in the American Revolution.
A Merely Comic Conclusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Xenophon’S Spartan Constitution, Conor Hogan
A Merely Comic Conclusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Xenophon’S Spartan Constitution, Conor Hogan
CMC Senior Theses
In this paper, I hope to do a small part to bridge the gap that has emerged in this scholarly debate between the historicist and Straussian views of Spartan society. To that end, this paper will analyze the Spartan Constitution according to the Straussian method. That is, I will engage in a close reading of the text, only referencing outside, secondary sources directly when necessary and appropriate. In other cases, their views will simply color this analysis and be referenced as supporting evidence in footnotes. Strauss chose to have only a superficial interaction with the existing scholarship at the time …
The Song Remains The Same: Reconciling Nikephoros Bryennios’ Materials For A History, James Gilmer
The Song Remains The Same: Reconciling Nikephoros Bryennios’ Materials For A History, James Gilmer

The following thesis presents new perspectives on the representation of Byzantine generals during the eleventh century, focusing specifically on parallel representations of Nikephoros Bryennios the Elder. I will argue that Byzantine chroniclers routinely employed the language of Byzantine military manuals as a template to describe the generals who populate the pages of their works. This tendency created a shared language of praise and censure which chroniclers applied to the generals whose reputation they sought either to exalt or to tarnish. The career of Nikephoros Bryennios the Elder as it is presented in the History of Michael Attaleiates and the Materials …

Review: Faces Of Contemporary Russia: Advanced Russian Language And Culture, Snezhana Zheltoukhova
Russian Language Journal
Cultural literacy is of the utmost importance for advanced language students. Olga M. Mesropova’s Faces of Contemporary Russia is thus a welcome addition to the selection of upper-level textbooks for Russian learners. Unlike existing advanced materials, it offers an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary Russian culture, media studies, history, politics, anthropology, and sociology, making it well-suited for a content based language course with discussions and independent research as its primary focus. The book successfully presents input at the academic essay level with intricate syntax and target output of paragraph-length oral and written discourse on abstract general topics relevant to both Russia …
How America Became Capitalist: Imperial Expansion And The Conquest Of The West, James Parisot
How America Became Capitalist: Imperial Expansion And The Conquest Of The West, James Parisot
Sociology Faculty Publications
In an age of political and economic uncertainty, from the Great Recession to the election of Donald Trump, it is essential to understand the ways capitalism and imperialism are central to the American way of life. The story told in this book brings together a new interpretation of American history beyond mainstream perspectives to chart the ways in which white-settler colonialism pushed expansion on the western frontier of empire, and locates the history through which empire gradually took on a capitalist form. It follows the pathway of expansion from the making of an Atlantic world market through the creation of …
King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich
King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
King Benjamin's address is well known to readers of the Book of Mormon and is often quoted in devotional contexts. The address marks the transition between two great kings of Nephite history: Benjamin and Mosiah. It is also a moment of teaching and of testimony for the old king. From that point on, the people are officially called by the name of Christ. Another moment of teaching and of popular commitment occurs in the Book of Mosiah, although it receives less attention: the address given by King Mosiah and Alma the Elder when the latter's people arrive in Zarahemla (reported …

If perhaps I am certain of nothing else, I am indeed certain of one thing: I cannot resist holy books. Understand me correctly, however. I regard all of them highly-the fiery bass voices of the Qur'an; Gautama's all-tolerating claptrap of wisdom; the large compendium of Jewish cultural history called the Old Testament-but I refuse steadfastly to link the word "truth'' with any of them. Whoever imagines that he possesses the truth has lost it in that very same instant. Truth has no meaning for us. Nothing would be more unfortunate than some kind of 5 percent clause of the Spirit, …

In their new book, "A Great Power of Attorney": Understanding the Fiduciary Constitution, Gary Lawson and Guy Seidman argue that, as a matter of original meaning, the Constitution should be understood as analogous to a power of attorney, that interpretive devices applicable to powers of attorney should therefore be used in constitutional interpretation, and that interpreting the Constitution that way would produce results congenial to modern libertarian preferences, such as the unconstitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and the invalidity, on nondelegation grounds, of much of the federal administrative state. But the book fails to carry any of its central …

Present And Future Adventures In Illustration, Jaleen Grove, Illustration Department
Faculty & Librarian Work
This article discusses current trends and the future of illustration. Several illustrators and educators are interviewed, such as Anita Kunz, Armando Veve, Barbara Nessim, and Martin Salisbury. Topics include publishing, virtual reality, children's books, diversity and representation, high tuition, and the lesser respect and pay that many illustrators experience. The article also relates the history of American illustration 1959-2019 in the form of a tongue-in-cheek boardgame The Illustration Game, in which players advance through the years, encountering typical events in the industry. The game-board is scattered with historical funny-in-hindsight quotes of well-known illustrators, designers and other professionals, which illuminate …

On The Edge Of Inclusion: A Look At The Shifting Of Representation In Museum Display And Archival Cataloging, Natalie Ray
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This project, entitled "On The Edge of Inclusion: A Look at the Shifting of Representation in Museum Display and Archival Cataloging" by Natalie Ray delves into how the growing trend of social justice has raised new questions about how to better represent marginalized populations and how museum work has followed this pursuit. The digital age continues to impact the dynamism of exhibiting. Accurate representation becomes more imperative now that representative texts are able to reach more people than ever before. This increasing access coupled with the expanding interest in social justice and cultural reconciliation renders it necessary for curators and …

“We Are A Very Happy Family”: 19th-Century Familial Power Dynamics, Stella A. Ress
“We Are A Very Happy Family”: 19th-Century Familial Power Dynamics, Stella A. Ress
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
This article examines the roles of family members in the mid-19th century in America, using the Willard family as a case study. Ultimately, this thick description of the Willard family demonstrates that power within the family structure was neither intrinsic nor static; moreover, one person did not control the family and its decisions at all times. Instead, each family member, depending upon circumstances, situations, and his or her own nature, negotiated and laid claim to power through various sources of authority. Josiah Willard’s authority stemmed from his role as father and husband; society crowned him king of the household, and …

Nuanced Narratives: Reporting With Critical Race And Feminist Standpoint Theories, Emily Margaret Pelland
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Google Expedition titled WWI Era Through the Eyes of the Chicago Defender explores African American experiences during the early years of the Great Migration (1910-1970). Conventional journalism relies on the false idea that journalists are meant to be, and can be, objective, outside observers. This report provides tools for journalists to create more nuanced, thorough storytelling endeavors. This report describes the theoretical framework and intent of the Virtual Reality (VR) project for students in grades 8 and above. It utilizes Feminist Standpoint Theory (FST) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) to cultivate a VR experience that acknowledges particular, overlooked aspects …

The Composition Of History: A Critical Point Of View Of Michel Foucault's Archaeology, Javier Gálvez Aguirre
The Composition Of History: A Critical Point Of View Of Michel Foucault's Archaeology, Javier Gálvez Aguirre
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The author discusses in "The composition of History: a critical point of view of Michel Foucault's archaeology" a very specific aspect within the work of Foucault: the role of the philosophies of history in the composition of historical discourse. The philosophies of history of pre-revolutionary Europe were able to show a discursive continuity that does not tally with the discontinuities that are sought in Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical project. The question that is asked following the analyses of these discourses does not fully escape from the analyses of the knowledge-power apparatuses: how is it possible that the practical-political nature of …

The Mysteries Of Maisie Hitchins: The Case Of The Feathered Mask, Cynthia Phillips
The Mysteries Of Maisie Hitchins: The Case Of The Feathered Mask, Cynthia Phillips
Children's Book and Media Review
Professor Tobin has traveled the world collecting exquisite and priceless artifacts. He has decided to donate a number of the artifacts to the British museum. The night before the crates are delivered to the museum, one of the artifacts is stolen, a one-of-a-kind feathered mask from the Amazon. Maisie Hitchins, Professor Tobin’s young house maid and friend, determines to catch the thief. She has little to go on, but the Professor is counting on her. It turns out, thieves are not always what they seem, and maybe the feathered mask was needed more somewhere besides the British museum.

A History Of Civilization In 50 Disasters, Emilee Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
A History of Civilization in 50 Disasters throws together the fates of a variety of countries through the light of massive global disasters. The book explores the effects of volcanoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and more, halfway around the world from where they occurred and months after the initial damage was done. Readers will dive a little deeper into the small yet impactful disasters that inevitably occur when human society clashes with nature, from famine to plague epidemics. 50 Disasters even includes zany episodes like a tank of molasses exploding in tenement neighborhoods in the dead heat of summer. From BC to …

Honors Program Theses and Projects
One of the most recognizable figures in the world during his lifetime, heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, previously Cassius Clay and Cassius X, put his self-esteem on display with the simple declaration “I am the greatest.” This was a phrase he told himself long before he truly was the greatest, but he proved it to the world in 1964 when he defeated defending champion Sonny Liston. Upon knocking out his dangerous, violent, and cheating opponent, Ali whipped himself into a frenzy, as onlookers saw him fall over the ropes, scream at the ringside reporters who had previously doubted him, and …

Racial Integration And White Supremacy In America: Can America Integrate Its Power Structures And Liberate Them From White Supremacy, Billy Lane
Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations
Neither the presence of black people in predominantly white spaces nor the appropriation of black culture are indicators of racial justice. Power structures must be integrated even more so than subdivisions, classrooms, breakrooms, church pews, and pop culture. This thesis will explore the absence of African-American leadership from the highest ranks of our power structures that are central to contemporary life and the dynamics within each of these power structures that help to protect white supremacy and therefore maintain segregation.
When Art Becomes Political: An Analysis Of Irish Republican Murals 1981 To 2011, Maura Wester
When Art Becomes Political: An Analysis Of Irish Republican Murals 1981 To 2011, Maura Wester
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
For nearly thirty years in the late twentieth century, sectarian violence between Irish Catholics and Ulster Protestants plagued Northern Ireland. Referred to as “the Troubles,” the violence officially lasted from 1969, when British troops were deployed to the region, until 1998, when the peace agreement, the Good Friday Agreement, was signed. Despite the changes in the government system, two things have not changed in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement: the pride both Loyalists and Republicans have in their cultures and their means to express this: murals. Traditionally a Loyalist practice dating back to late 1920s, Republican murals did …
