Disturbing The Dream Of Integration: Critical Whiteness And The History Of Penn State’S College Of Education, 1954-1963, Ali Watts
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
In this study I drawn upon Critical Whiteness frameworks and a deconstructionist historiographical method to explore tensions between espoused and enacted ‘integrationist’ values within the Pennsylvania State University’s College of Education in the decade following Brown v. Board (1954-1963). This site-specific historical approach is a response to the fact that the vast majority of higher education scholarship exploring the history of the Civil Rights era focuses on Southern institutions and their overt struggles over desegregation and racial integration. This focus is warranted given the dramatic and often violent nature of this period of Southern history, but it may serve to …
Colonized And Racist Indigenous Campus Tour: Research-In-Brief, Robin Minthorn, Christine A. Nelson
Colonized And Racist Indigenous Campus Tour: Research-In-Brief, Robin Minthorn, Christine A. Nelson
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This Research-in-Brief explores the macro-structural aspects of college campuses and environments to understand how higher education institutions have created, maintained, and justified hostile campus climates against Indigenous students. It uncovers the embedded racist and genocidal values that are often cherished through dominant campus tours. This includes addressing how an incomplete understanding of history leads to centering oppressive values that disenfranchise Indigenous students in higher education. Offered is an abbreviated interpretation of the concept of Power and Place (Deloria & Wildcat, 2001), centering critical Indigenous values in the assessment. The case study articulates the historical and contemporary aspects of space and …

Broken Households: Black And White Baptists And Methodists In Transition In Post-Emancipation Texas, Timothy "Ashton" Reynolds
Broken Households: Black And White Baptists And Methodists In Transition In Post-Emancipation Texas, Timothy "Ashton" Reynolds
History Theses and Dissertations
The end of slavery in Texas and the South undercut more than just the economic, labor, and social foundations in Texas. It undercut doctrinal certainty for white Baptists and Methodists and called into question two of their most valued beliefs: the biblical legitimacy of slavery and the divine appointment of white (and male) supremacy. This thesis asks and attempts to answer the question of how white Baptists and Methodists reacted when they were no longer able to practice slavery as a legally sanctioned religiously underpinned institution. By examining denominational documents, church minute books, writings by influential Baptist and Methodist figures, …

Racial Conflict In Early Utah: Mormon, Native American And Federal Relations, Raelyn M. Embleton
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This website is for teachers to gain information and sources about Utah history during the early territorial period, specifically relating to conflicts between Mormon settlers, Native Americans, and federal officials. The content and site were designed with the C3 curriculum in mind, as such, at the bottom of this page you can find a downloadable Inquiry Design Model Blueprint. As you teach students this information, the compelling question to have students focus on is: “Does culture and the interaction of cultures shape the development of place?” Each event highlighted on this website is related to the other and demonstrates how …
The Powers That Be: A Phenomenological Study Of College Students' Impressions Of The Bias In Religious Narratives In History Textbooks, Sarah Irene Herrero
The Powers That Be: A Phenomenological Study Of College Students' Impressions Of The Bias In Religious Narratives In History Textbooks, Sarah Irene Herrero
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the perception of bias of college students at a local college regarding the religious narratives in history textbooks. The theory that guided this study was reader response theory, as it identified the tendency of readers to bring their experiences and backgrounds to the literature they read. The study accomplished this by answering (a) how do college students who claim to perceive bias describe their experience of that perception of bias in religious narratives in history textbooks; (b) how do college students describe bias; (c) how do college students construct perceptions of …

2019 James R. Browning Distinguished Lecture In Law, "Holding The Delicate Balance Steady And True": The History Of Fisa's Grand Bargain, Richard C. Tallman, Tania M. Culbertson
Montana Law Review
The Honorable Richard C. Tallman and his career law clerk Tania M. Culbertson explain what led to the passage of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ("FISA") and its creation of the FISA courts, and describe the grand bargain that was struck between our three branches of government when creating FISA's judicial review procedures over domestic espionage and counter-terrorism investigations. Their hope is to leave you with a keener understanding of how we have arrived at where we are today, and how the judiciary understands its oversight role within FISA's statutory framework under our Constitution.

Turning Points In The History Of St. Mary’S University School Of Law (1980–1988), Vincent R. Johnson
St. Mary's Law Journal
St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas has existed for nearly a century. Thus far, there have been seven important written histories of St. Mary’s University School of Law, but no one has yet attempted to write a comprehensive history of the law school, nor have any members of the faculty published autobiographies. Having taught law at St. Mary’s since 1982, Professor of Law Vincent R. Johnson shares his first-hand account about the life of the law school during most of the 1980s (specifically 1980 to 1988). That period encompasses the bulk of the deanship of James …

‘The Healing Hand Laid On A Great Wound:’ The Elberfeld System And The Transformation Of Poverty In Germany, Britain, And The United States, Rebekah O'Zell Mcmillan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation employs a transnational analysis to focus on historical perceptions of poverty and the development of private and public welfare in the modern era. This research places the emergence of early poverty relief schemes within a broader transatlantic context by studying the relationships among social reformers in Germany, Great Britain, and the United States. This work has two primary objectives. First, it focuses on the Elberfeld Poor Relief System a nineteenth and early twentieth century German innovation emphasizing local poor relief and community responsibility, which transformed poor relief into an efficient structure. Second, the Elberfeld System was instrumental in …

The Difference Denominations Made: Identifying The Black Church(Es) And Black Religious Choices Of The Early Republic, Kyle T. Bulthuis
The Difference Denominations Made: Identifying The Black Church(Es) And Black Religious Choices Of The Early Republic, Kyle T. Bulthuis
History Faculty Publications
Scholars of African-American religious history have recently debated the significance of the black church in American history. Those that have, pro and con, have often considered the black church as a singular entity, despite the fact that African Americans affiliated with a number of different religious traditions under the umbrella of the black church. This article posits that it is useful to consider denominational and theological developments within different African-American churches. Doing so acknowledges plural creations and developments of black churches, rather than a singular black church, which better accounts for the historical experience of black religion. In this piece, …

A Preliminary Historical Report On Embracing Online Education In Occupational Therapy, Janel Anne Belarmino, Angela Bahle-Lampe
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The relevance and popularity of online occupational therapy education have been increasingly recognized. This paper describes the historical development of online occupational therapy education. Findings revealed three shifts in occupational therapy education, namely shifts in perception, in mode of instruction, and in the roles of teachers and students. The inception of online education in occupational therapy was a product of technological advancement and the demand for improved access to occupational therapy online education. The early phase of occupational therapy online education was confronted with challenges related to hesitance in the development and implementation of online programs and to negative perceptions …
Known Unknowns And Unknown Knowns: What We Know About The Cannabis And The Hashish Trade In Afghanistan, James T. Bradford, David Mansfield
Known Unknowns And Unknown Knowns: What We Know About The Cannabis And The Hashish Trade In Afghanistan, James T. Bradford, David Mansfield
Faculty Works
In the past four decades, much of the contemporary narrative of Afghanistan has been defined by opium. However, underneath the veil of the opium economy, the cannabis trade remains an enduring component of Afghanistan’s political economy and culture. Much of this stems from the long history of cannabis cultivation and hashish production in the region. During the 1960s, the growing demand from Western nations for Afghan hashish helped forge key global trafficking networks, as well as significant changes to the cultivation of cannabis and production of hashish. Since then, production and trade evolved, with cultivation of cannabis more widespread. Ultimately, …
