The enclosed letter will explain itself. Mrs Jackson is one of our most gifted women & authors but as 'crochety' as it is the privilege of genius to be. She broke her leg early in the fall, a '[commcrated?] compound fracture' and came for the third time to Los A. to winter.
She laid in a crowded boarding house with bad courage, and taking little bodily exercise - was even poisoned. She has fallen into the hands of a [vanity?] of homeopaths who make a good thing of it I fancy. …
