The robins & bluebirds have returned - The anemones are again in blossom and the grass is growing green once more - and we hear & [give?] praises to the Creator all around us - and surely [celebrate?] with them within ourselves - I enclose to you Anna Merrill Foster's letter - also a clipping containing words which reminded me of you as I read them. I had a letter from Mrs. C. C. Parry recently - written in Philadelphia. She complains of very poor health. She enquires very affectionately about you & your family - Says she has …

Dear Mr. Muir,-
I inclose a copy of Mr. Olmsted's letter in reply to Governor Waterman. This letter has been published during the past week in the New York Evening Post. I also inclose a copy ofVanderveer's bill, the only fault of which is that the limits of the new Park are too narrow. Yesterday's New York Times published the, fifth(inclosed) letter from Mackenzie confounding Waterman, and the New York Sun of March 21st contains an editorial appealing to the independent press of California to intervene for the protection of the Valley.
I shall appear before the …

Dear Mr Johnson
I went to the city yesterday to seek the illustrations you want. Keith had three paintings of falls in Tuolumne Canon. I told him they were too large. He will make copies of these in India ink, & a copy a fine painting of the Tuolumne Meadows & Mts Dana & Gibbs, also India ink sketches of two or three other rocks & falls in the big Canon. He promises to have them ready this week when I will forward. Robinson I could not find - Hill is in Portland, Or. His address …

My dear Mr Johnson
I sent a few more sketches today, some of which you may want for Yosemite or Tuolumne. Keith said in a letter a day or two ago that he hand painted three Tuolumne Canon pictures in black & white which I will forward soon as I get them. The Yosemite M.S. will be ready in a week or two. It looks as if it would take up a whole article, will not I fear be able to get in much Tuolumne & High Sierra I fear. We are all well & mud-bound …

Your good & kind letter was rec'd the first of the week & I do thank you and Louie . we have done much thinking since then & would like to come & accept your most generous offers if the way was clear, John has written, too explaining the situation somewhat - but it is hard to write so as to make one understand the outs & ins. Dear brother John Muir:
Maggie received your letter a few days ago, for which we thank you very much for your kindness to us. We have thought the matter of coming to Cal. now very carefully, and think it would not be best to do [so] at present, for several reasons, 1st, the ranch --- there has been too much paid on it and also improvements made to abandon it, as the place would go to rack and ruin, I am going down there next week to see what I can do with it --- …

Dear Mr. Muir, -
I am very glad to learn that you are at work on the proposed extension of the Yosemite Valley Grant.
As you seem a lit tied troubled about going over the old ground of the Yosemite itself, I have hit upon a man who will relieve you of that part of it, leaving you free to consider only the portion outside of the Valley, and [illegible] Big Tree reservation. Of course, this will not cut you off from mentioning anything you want inside of the present grant; but it would relieve you of …

My Dear Friend:
At the earliest time permitted by my mental and physical condition, I acknowledge receipt of your tender words of sympathy. Sympathy sweetens the bitter contents of the cup from which I am made to drink. It is soothing, but the wound is deep, and more than human balm is required for true relief. Heavy and dreadful has been my blow, and desper-
-ate is the warfare between my strength and grief. At times the latter about conquers and it is difficult to find hope. Oh, how sweet would be a full …

Dear Mr Johnson,
That is a pretty big block of mountains you have indicated for our article. I fear the description will seem lean & scrawny, however I will gladly do the best I can with it hoping to call attention to its value as our grand "Central Park" in the Sierra. There will be no lack of sketches or photographs for illustrations. Keith has some Tuolumne Canon sketches & some of mine can be fixed up perhaps, photographs of the Big Meadows & the adjacent can be had, but of the interesting region about the …

It stands in my bedroom and though brown and old I have not felt that I could throw them away yet. Where tempted to do so I just blow the dust away and put them back in with his eyes sparkling flowers, flowers, his name for flowers, he was so delighted see my them in the yard. [Marjorie] …

Your letter arrived yesterday & I was glad to hear that you were well & the children. I am pegging away making dull slow headway though improving now that the squirrels chinamen & grapes are out of me.
