John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Raymond, Fresno Co., Cal.

Dec. 25., 1890.

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I enclose a clipping of an article of mine. A few land-grabbers are endeavoring to create opposition to the Park, and the Yosemite ring is trying to help them in an underhand way. If the landgrabbers were wise they would not seek to draw attention to themselves. If W. S. Land officials would do their duty there would be a devil of a rumpus over the timber that has been grabbed by "syndicates" and others in the Park region. I see a report that Mr. Special Inspector Newsham has returned …

My dear brother John, and Sister Louie,

It does not seem so very long since we were exchanging Christmas greetings, and yet we are just about to enter upon a new year, and soon will have passed another of the milestones on our life journey, as we pass along the way, dear ones are leaving us for the better land; and we go on, under the clouds, if we try to go alone, but amid the sunshine (even if we do not see it sometimes) if truly under the guidance and direction of our …

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I congratulate you on the success in the House of the Simonds bill. I have just written a brisk note to Senator Hearst, soliciting his vote and interest in favor of the prompt passage of the bill by the Senate. Would that I could do more for so just a cause! But, while my present ability to help doesn't amount to anything, I have the pleasant remembrance that as long as 20 years ago I was a pen-warrior against the piracy business, and so may flatter myself with the …

Dear Mr. Johnson,

[in margin: Ever Yours John Muir.]

I send you a few of my sketches of the two Kings River Yosemites some of which you may want. I went to Robinson's studio a few days ago to see what he was doing. He has about eight large sketches on pasteboard for the South Fork Yosemite. None for the Middle Fork, which he has not seen. His sketches are grand affairs but are all made up of rock showing no level floor. They might be used as illustrations of almost any of the grand canon. …

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I am settled for a time near the above address. I came down by way of Wawona, purposely to learn something about Mr. Newsham's intentions. I learned enough to satisfy me that he proposes to make a sort of white-washing report of the condition of the Valley and of the Grove; furthermore, that all his recommendations are likely to have been suggested by the Washburns. After I came here I received …

If Mr. Muir has not returned from the King's River Canon when this reaches you, will you kindly write him that it might be worth while for him to visit also the Tulare Big Tree reservation. The Secretary of the Interior is making inquires as to the best way to take care of these recently reserved parks, and any information which Mr. Muir could give, would be of great use. Also such a trip might furnish him material for an additional page to the King's River Canon article.

My Dear Sir:-

Your telegram of yesterday announcing the sudden death of Uncle was handed me this morning - not knowing that Uncle was sick, it was indeed sudden, as well as sad news to us all.
