Portage, Wis. [Wisonsin] August 22 / 98. Dear Sister Louie, You have been much in my mind lately, for I have been remembering that your wandering boy has gone off again for a “stroll,” we have not heard how long he intends to be away but suppose he will take a good long one when he is about it, as mountain climbing, and scaling, is such a pleasure to him. His work and study is so highly appreciated and so well known everywhere. A lady and gentleman living here, in talking with [Celice] said that while traveling they visited the …

My Beloved Husband:
Your beautiful letters three from Norway came yesterday, while we were away among the green "redwoods" of Moraga Canyon, our only "summer jaunt" since the Erwins were here, and we enjoyed it exceedingly. There were but few trees over a foot through, for a lumber-mill years ago destroyed all the glorious trees that once had their home near this beautiful roadway to the sea; and the fierce fires that followed after only cleared the way, alas, for a distressingly thrifty growth of poison oak among the fresh hazel wands. 0, but it …

Dear Helen:
I had a long walk to-day among rocks and trees and beautiful flowers, and all the time could see great mountains covered with ice. The sun was shining on them and they were very beautiful, and I could see many waterfalls and hear them singing wherever I went. I wish you could have been with me, but I suppose you'll come sometime when you are old enough.
Here in Mama's letter are some of the flowers I gathered.

Dear Louie,
I had a glorious day at Zermatt on the Gorner Grat about 9000ft. high, close to Monte Rosa and the Gorner Glacier, the largest in this region.
Aug. 17
No sooner had I commenced to write yesterday than I was called to mount the diligence for Chamonix where I now am. I have seen so much and have been reading the majestic inscriptions of the ice here so greedily that I hardly know where to begin. I suppose I may as well leave out the science altogether and tell that when I get home. …

You will have returned from Norway before this. I suppose you have had a delightful time and that you have seen many strange wonders while in Norway. I hope that we will soon hear from you and hear about all these things Helen is very well and the weather has been a little cooler than it has been. Grandma and Mama are pretty well.
