My dear Brother John

I write to thank you for your kind remembrance and the New Years gift that you sent me. I intend to use it in a way that will bring a great deal of pleasure and be a lasting benefit. Do you remember the old clock that you and I bought together more than thirty years ago? Well, the shelf that it stood upon, I put up myself, the screws at the upper part of the brackets proved to be too short and unnoticed, worked loose and so some weeks …

Mrs Sellers has not been well since our arrival but will I think, be all right soon.

John Muir

My dear Friend.

I should be writing you now even if you had not written me last Friday. It was my resolve not to write till I had wound up your Californian Bible with its closing Revelation on bees. All is now done.
The book was in you an inspiration--and it inspires all who have any fraction of your communion with nature.
Rocking like a baby in the tree-top (252p) you recall my experience 53 years ago when I ran like a squirrel into the main-top and higher, when the mast swung from side …

My dear Mrs Carr, We are all glad that you so wisily work & bear up under your bereavement. All this passing from life to life however gloriously hopeful is ever sad, & they are truly blest who have the strength & faith to work on & enjoy on without halting or hasting like a star, as Goethe says, or like a glacier as I say.

All those cases of spirit-sight seem strange and most of us have to go on without it as best we can. Remember me warmly to Mrs Conger and tell her …

Mr. John Muir,

Martinez, California.

My dear Mr. Muir,

I had hoped to have time write you a personal letter before this, but I have been more than overwhelmed with office and home and social affairs, so that I have scarcely had an evening to myself since my returnts; at last I am forced to resort to a dictated letter* and that in cold typewriting, but you will pardon me, I am sure. I have thought of you often, of my delightful visit at your house, and of the hospitality so kindly extended to me by Mrs. …

Dear Mr. Muir,

Your letter came yesterday just as Miss Thompson had left. I did want her to see you. May I not bring her up some bright Sunday? She's rare, an old friend of Miss Eliza's and Aunt Kate's, and one whom we all love.
Yes, do write to Janet a little letter, she needs the cheer which comes from friendly thought. Her address is 946 N. Penn St., Indianapolis. The family now lives in the beautiful new house which Charles bought. Aunt Kate has given up coming this winter. Her …

Dear brother John:

Your generous and very acceptable New Year's gift came safely and reached me just in time to cheer the close of New Year's day. I cannot express my appreciation of your brotherly kindness; for these past few years, and especially the last, have been more heavily fraught with difficulty and trouble to us than any one, not knowing the circumstances, can possibly understand. Walter's long, hard, unsuccessful struggle, with none of the cheer and relaxation of home life, begins to tell very perceptibly on even his strong will and unflinching spirit, and …

Reid's map is far the best that has been publishedI make's few changes in it. Reid has named, I' see, some of the tributaries of the Muir Glacier. The word Glacier of the Carroll Glacier runs down the main trunk of the Muir, which is confusing. Therefore I have turned it down towards the Carroll Inlet. But worse still, the name Cushing -Glacier is placed right in the middle of the main trunk of the Muir Glacier. Therefore I have moved it back to where (if anywhere) it belongs. Print this name in small type. Also I …

Dear Mrs. McChesney:

Yours of the 14 set me thinking -- and I “believe I have shirked letter writing, and neglected my friends who are good beyond any desert of mine. Browning's line is apropos of this --

But even justice compels me to say that I was, and am still very inert, from the long tension, I suppose.
I am not well, but neither am I diseased in any organ …
