My dear Muir,
Your recent letter to me saying that you will go to the Klondike if I will was most alluring, and I only wish it were possible for me to go there or anywhere else in your company, but this year I am tied to my desk, as I had rather a long vacation last fall.
I am very sorry to say that your letter which I showed to Mr. Gilder has been mislaid. I regret …

Here are two hopeful clippings in the midst of gloomy forest clouds what do you think of the new magazine the Forester of the Am. Forestry Assoc. I dont like the form of it so far proving the benefit of sheep in forests, the mistakes of the Academy Com. etc. Pinchot seems to have fallen into the arms of politicians. I wish you would write a forestry editorial for the Century & get Sargent to write another. The reservations made by Cleveland last year will soon be up again in Congress.

concerned on Lotties sickness
Martinez, March 1/98
My dear Mr. Lukens
We were very glad to receive your letter Yesterday telling dear little Lottie's return to health through the terrible dangers of that Scarlet Fever. Now the danger lies in taking cold & bringing on after effects too well known that last a lifetime - blindness deafness etc. No doubts you will guard her most strictly against this.
Heaven bless the child is the prayer of your friend.

My dear Cousin John:
It seems a very long time since we heard from you. I sea the date of your last letter is Oct. 15, tolling us of the death of Mrs. Strentzel. Maggie and I often speak about you all, when sitting by the fireside in the long winter evenings. However, the days are getting much longer now, which does not make it so dreary for us two.
We had a kind long letter from Mrs. Galloway from Portage the beginning of the month. She mentions that you had a cold, bronchitis, which …

My dear Muir:
I am pegging away very constantly at The Silva with very little enjoyment to myself but with the hope that the job will be off my hands by the end of this year.
Last week I went to Ottawa, passed a day there talking to explorers who spend their summers in Labrador and the valley of the lower Mackenzie River and such other out-of-the-way parts of the world. The Canadian winter with its cold dry snow and brilliant sunshine I found delightful. Next month I must go …

THE WILD PARKS AND FOREST RESERVATIONS OF THE WEST. " Keep not standing fix'd and rooted, Briskly venture, briskly roam ; Head and hand, where'er thou foot it, And stout heart are still at home. In each land the sun does visit We are gay, whate'er betide: To give room for wandering is it That the world was made so wide." The tendency nowadays to Wander in wildernesses is delightful to see. A SERIOUS MENACE. The Express in its issue of August 2nd spoke of the need for quick and vigorous- action to save the mountain growths of this region from utter destruction. Sheep men and campers, but particularly sheep men, threaten the prosperity of these Southern California valleys more and more seriously every year, by setting Are to the forest trees, underbrush and beds of leaves which are our only protection against floods and droughts. Rains absorbed by mountain slopes are so much clear gain to the farmers. Those which rush down in torrents, disappearing in the sands of the various …
