Martinez Dec. 11. 1900

My dear Mr Lukens

The package of specimens came after mailing a letter for you yesterday It is Adenostoma sparsifolium. The other species, Adenostoma fasciculatum so abundant in the Sierra farming extension belts like heath just below the yellow pine, of course you know, often called "chamiso". Your species is restricted to the southern ranges, I first saw it on the San Jacinto Mtns back of San Diego I would like to see it in flower. It belongs to the rose family

Dear Mr. Muir,

The suggestion about your autobiography which I sent you a week or two ago on the spur of the moment after a delightful talk with Mr. Burroughs was of course purely personal. I am happy now to write you that the project—or possibility—seems equally attractive to Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Company, and at the last meeting of the House in committee it was the unanimous wish that you should write your biography and give them the opportunity to publish it.
To all of us here the idea of the book is very engaging:—the untrammelled …

[NOV. 1900] (75)

I am utterly opposed to the injustice of exchanging denuded reserve lands for an equal number of acres [of] outside timber land. Not even for a much desired extension of a reserve should such unjust money-making schemes be for a moment encouraged. I for one am utterly opposed to it.
This Tahoe swindle has been planned years ago and pushed industriously. In particular the influence of the sierra Club has been persistently sought under plausible arguments …

Mr. W. B. Parker:

I thank you for your kind letter concerning autobiography. What autobiographical material J[ohn] Burroughs referred to I don't know. I hope to get some more important matters off my hand before trying the story of my life, which contains but little of general interest. I was a skilful mountaineer, and therefore had few adventures, and my wildest climbs and scrambles were as uneventful as - - Mr. J[ohnson] of the Century Co. has been at me for a long time [letter unfinished]

I'm sorry this season has not been fruitful in haws, preventing the speedy ending of the already long drawn out Crataegus chapter of your book But in spite of the short crop of haws & the [Rome?] beds & loneliness you must have had a grand trip. Anyhow You'll get no pity from me as long as you are free to wander in the glorious Eastern forests. About how many more years are you going to give to Crataegus? You seem to count on longevity rivaling Sequoia.

I am very anxious to do anything I can with money, writing or talking towards securing a block of 3 or 4000 acres of redwood for a park.
