Mr John Muir

Dear Sir

I wish to thank you for the pleasure I have received from perusal of your book about "Our National Parks". I had read some of the articles as they came out in the "Atlantic", and was glad to see them published so handsomely in book form. I have lately had from our city library the two beautiful volumes about the Harriman expedition to Alaska, and have read them with much interest.

Dear Sir:

I am, as you know, heartily interested in the Sequoia and other national parks, their preservation, roads rendering them accessible, etc., and I have no doubt Captain Andrews has done his duty as Superintendent of the Seq[uoia] and Gen. Grant Nat. Parks. But as I have no personal knowledge of the reasons required by the President for the retention of Cap. Andrews, I am sorry to say it seems to disqualify me to act in the matter.

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Martinez, Nov. 13, 1901

My dear Merriam,

If I should write till doomsday I could say nothing new on this miserable sheep question. The most discouraging thing about it is the tranquil comfortable apathy of the leading men in the forestry Dept. towards it-asking solemnly again and again, "Is the pasturing of sheep in the western forests injurious?" As far as those of Washington and Oregon are concerned even Pinchot says No. The whole forest management must be brought under Civil Service rules and separated wholly from politics else it will matter but little in which department it is placed. …

My dear Merriam:

I don't believe I could say anything new on this miserable sheep business if I should write till doom's day. The most discouraging thing about it is the tranquil comfortable apathy with which the leading men in the forestry department regard the matter, calmy asking the questions and discussing it in meetings and magazines.
Still, the right justice must win at last. The whole forest management must be brought under civil service rules and taken out of politics.
