My dear Mr Muir-
Well I guess we are going to be real Californians at last. I have just bought a very nice house, lot 140 x 364 feet with some of the grandest trees & shrubbery on it in Pasadena-

My Dear Mr. Muir:-
Your letter, sketch of your life, and book - "Mountains of California" were received yesterday - It was certainly a very pleasant surprise and gave me much pleasure- I thank you very much for your very kind letter, sketch and book - which I will all read as soon as time will permit, and know I will enjoy it much. You certainly knew great many of my father's friends - he carried on a correspondence with all the botanists you mentioned - and we have their letters now - I too regret that you and my …

I have recently looked over a number of the specimens which you obtained from the petrified forest last year and from what I have seen of them I would simply verify the statement which I made at your house last [illegible] that they are the remains of large reptiles, generally considered as primitive crocodiles. The most commonly known from of this group is the genus Belodon. The animals are about the same size as the recent crocodiles and have somewhat the same appearance but differ somewhat in the details of structure. …

Dear Mr. Muir –
I find in the herbarium here a specimen of Eucalyptus which in all obvious characters matches yours perfectly. It is E. rubida collected by Maiden, and marked new species. The species had not been published at the time of the British Museum list, which came down to 1900. Consequently we have no indication of where to look for full description. It seems very unlikely that Dr. Strenzel so long ago should have secured a species so little known and so lately distinguished as this – unless, indeed, it had been all this …

Dear Sir:
If republics are not ungrateful as proverbially reported, one thing is certain that the citizens thereof are likely to be neglectful in matters of ordinary courtesy. I asked some of those gentlemen who had charge of the Burns' banquet if they had made proper acknowledgement to you of your contribution, and if they had sent you a clipping of the newspaper. They blushingly admitted that what was the business of quite a number perhaps had been performed by none. But one of …

Dear Mr. Muir:-
It was very kind of you to send me that anxious little note of enquiry. - It touched me greatly that you seemed so much concerned about me. I don't know what the newspapers have said, but, judging by the results, it must have been something terrific. The matter was really not serious at all:- though it might easily enough have turned out quite otherwise. Beyond a few scarcely discoverable bruises, the chief damage seemed to be a heavy muscular strain in the lumbar region. That now is gone, and I should …
