Dear Mr. Colby:

I inclose a copy of our report. I forgot to ask you theother day about what the resolutions should be but I think I have gotthe main point. It was sent to Secretary Garfield last Saturday.I think we had better have quite a number of this report with theother papers printed and scattered where they will do most good.
Drop me a line occasionally and let me hear how things aregoing. In particular I think it important to have the Mazamas act with us. Send them a copy of our report as …

Dear Mr. Johnson:

Here is a copy of the report of the Sierra Club committee, sent to Secretary Garfield a few days ago. I think it would be a good thing to get the Appalachian Club to endorse it.
Mr. Pinchot came into the Director's meeting near its close. Heheard the principal objections discussed but I was disapointed in not getting a quiet talk with him to explain fully. He has never seen Hetch Hetchy. Mr. Pinchot's big mistake is taking Mr. Phelan's voice and the few under his direction as the voice of San Francisco. …

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Martinez, California.

Sept. 19/07.

Dear Mr. Johnson:

Here are a few clippings, a confused mess full of concealed motives. Youmay return them when done with them.
The objections to making Hetch Hetchy Valley a reservoir are briefly
(1)That such use would to a great damaging extent defeat the purpose and nullify the effect of the law creating the Park. For Hetch Hetchy is a counterpart of Yosemite, and a great and wonderful feature of the Park, next to Yosemite itself in beauty and grandeaur, visted by thousands even though as yet accessible only by trail.
(2)If dammed as proposed it …

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Martinez, Sep. 19/07

Dear Mr Keeler,

As no doubt you have seen by the newspapers, Mr Phelan & the S.F. Supervisors are trying to get the use of Hetch Hetchy Valley for a reservoir for city water supply. Their application to the Secretary should be denied because Hetch Hetchy is a wonderful counterpart of Yosemite with the same grand walls similiar in form & sculpture, with falls gardens groves meadows etc To dam it would be as destructive & deplorable an its effects on the Park as damming Yosemite itself. For not only would it be rendered utterly unaccessible but …

Portland, Oregon, Sept. 16, 1907.

Honorable James R. Garfield,

Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D. C.

Dear Sir:--

I am informed that a private corporation is seeking permission from the Government to appropriate and divert the flow of certain streams in Yosemite National Park, in California, together with appropriation of a large tract of land (specifically, the Hetch Hetchy Valley, a part of said National Park), for use as a storage reservoir; ostensibly for the purpose of furnishing water to San Francisco and adjacent cities.
Since my interest in this proposition, as a resident of Oregon, may be deemed somewhat …

I am anxious that the Yosemite National Park may be saved from all sorts of commercialism and marks of man's work other than the roads, hotels etc required to make its wonders and blessings available.
