Indigenous Movements In Colombia: Redefining Their Notion Of Citizenship Through Social Demonstrations, Representative Groups, And Constitutional And Legal Reforms, Catalina Betancur Velez

Indigenous groups in Colombia have been victims of forced displacement and dispossession of territory. As they become more present in current social and political conversations, there have been partial improvements and advancements of promises made by the government. However, the Colombian government and ethnic majorities still fall short of the guarantees and the assurance of indigenous citizenship. This essay proposes that through the means of resilient social demonstrations, the establishment of representative groups, and the push for Constitutional and legal reforms, Indigenous people in Colombia have established a multi- dimensional definition of citizenship that explicitly identifies the social and political …

Rooting For Spices, Carlos Emilio Rodriguez

The overarching theme of my thesis combines elements of magical realism with historical people, events, indigenous (Taino/Borike’n) spirituality, and folktales of Puerto Rico. Specifically, I researched, learned, wrote about, and explored the island’s dense history, political struggles, and importance to the colonizing countries of Spain and the United States. The proposed project required significant research time to depict these subjects, people, places, and stories with greater accuracy. I used what I discovered and applied it in chronological sections depicting the island’s historical narrative. I also attempted to employ a process of historical recall referred to as postmemory by Marianne Hirsch. …

Pine Bluff, Arkansas has long grappled with a reputation as a town riddled with crime and violence. Once a thriving agricultural center of the state, Arkansas residents tend to score the town’s successes as relics of the past. Economic decline, negative migration systems like white flight and brain drain, and racial disparities ties to the city’s roots has continued to take its toll on the city. Nonetheless, the community of Pine Bluff knows excellence has and continues to prosper there. A Song of the Bluff is a 15-minute documentary that seeks to flip the negative narrative by confronting these stereotypes …

The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger

The history of emotion has given a bit of attention to the role that fear plays as a historical motive. Yet, what fear is or how it may be used when examining primary sources which possess fictitious tales has sorely been neglected. In order to address this, this thesis argues that historians need to employ philosophical concepts of horror in order to truly grasp the unique qualities that emerge from these tales. This thesis provides a historical framework for these philosophical understandings of horror by examining the medieval and early modern mentalities which served as a framework for the formalization …

The Chapelle Des Lazaristes And Reliquary Shrine Of St. Vincent De Paul, 1850 To 1860: An Exposé Of Competing Aesthetic Schemes & Their Resolutions In The Alliance Des Arts, Simone Zurawski Ph.D.

Simone Zurawski describes the history, art, and architecture of the motherhouse church of the Congregation of the Mission, the Chapelle des Lazaristes in Paris. She also compares it to the Congregation’s church at the original site of their motherhouse and explains what the Congregation’s leadership was trying to accomplish with the design of the new chapelle. The chapelle is the site of Vincent de Paul’s reliquary shrine, and Zurawski describes the châsse or case that houses Vincent’s remains, which was designed by the legendary silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot. The organization of space through history is a difficult show in terms of research, but pleasant on the side of diachronic knowledge allowing knowledge of the present in order to be able to orient reflection towards the future. If in Morocco geography imposes and history disposes, local characteristics have then contributed to the organization of human groups throughout history. However, in the present time, it is the state institutions that organize the population within the units of territorial division, this is also contracted with competitive private activities in areas made by competition.
