Naval War College Review

Retired Marine officer and National Defense University research fellow Frank Hoffman’s Mars Adapting is, first and foremost, a work of military theory. Hoffman initially achieved notoriety for his work and briefs about something he characterized as hybrid or compound warfare, since popularized alongside the rise in interest in gray-zone conflict. This book’s major contribution is similarly theoretical, but in the area of institutional learning, not modalities of war. Hoffman argues “for greater consideration of Organizational Learning Theory [OLT] to establish an analytical framework.”

Captain Peter M. Swartz, USN (Ret.), has been a prominent figure in the maritime-strategy world since the early 1980s, playing a key role in the development and articulation of the noted 1980s Maritime Strategy. After retirement from active duty, he joined the staff at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), where he became a noted archivist and analyst of USN strategy documents, as well as an adviser to many naval officers and academics who dealt with strategy. Abstract

At a time that history has gained its place in Ghana’s basic school curriculum, considerable differences of opinion arise, not about the subject’s significance in the school curriculum but concerning the legitimacy of the subject title - that is, whether or not the subject should be referenced ‘History of Ghana’ or ‘Heritage of Ghana’. The different opinions reflect Lowenthal’s (1998) observation that history and heritage are separate disciplines. However, the two subjects are often used interchangeably (Mermion, 2012) and “are habitually confused with each other” (Lowenthal 1998, p. x). This work, the compiled diary of Lucy Breckenridge, was researched by her great-granddaughter, Jerrelene (Hill) Williamson of Spokane, WA. She built upon the work of Lucy’s daughter, Mary Hunt, who gathered the original diary materials. This work is available by permission of the Williamson family.

Lucy Breckenridge was born slavery 1855 in Abemarle, Virginia. She married Henry James Breckinridge in 1871. The family moved to Roslyn , Washington in 1888. The family later moved to Spokane in 1899. Henry died in 1907 and Lucy began her diary about 1919.

The emergent historical field of early American disability studies has catalyzed discussion on the mental and physical impairments that contributed to America’s cultural, medical, social, and economic foundations. How can historians tell an accurate story of mental illness, grounded in the narrative of America’s founding, and situate mental illness within disability studies? Literary and linguistic categories of analysis, presented in this thesis, can help historians begin to unpack disability in early modern New England.
