Bureaucracy has co-existed with forms of management accounting [MA] from the time of ancient civilizations. In this paper, we review literature in a wide variety of scholarly journals and books to provide an overview of this co-existence. We trace the historical evolution of MA and how it was influenced by bureaucracy from 1700 to the present. We do so through four time periods, designated classical, modern, post-modern and contemporary. For each of these periods, evolving understandings of bureaucracy were linked to changes in the practice and conceptualization of MA. Therefore, violence is culturally relevant. This paper examines the culture of violence in Saki’s “The Toys of Peace” and Ahmed Al-Malik’s “The Tank.” The two short stories are set in entirely different backgrounds and address violence in relation to children’s and adults’ lives, respectively. Creating A Surname Lexicon For Historical U.S. Records, Spencer Keith Timmerman

We develop a method for creating a lexicon of all correctly spelled surnames in historical US records. We focus specially on the full-count 1850-1940 census records which include over 10 million unique spellings in the surname field. We use links across multiple census records to identify the correct spellings of the surname transcriptions.

This thesis examines how gender and ideas about gender affected early female mountaineers and rock climbers. The study focuses on female dress standards in the Victorian era, the relative equity of accomplishment between male and female mountaineers and climbers, the portrayal of female climbers in the media, and the misrepresentation of female motivations for climbing. By analyzing primary sources from female climbers and mountaineers, this paper uncovers how women challenged traditional gender roles and navigated the complexities of the male-dominated climbing community.

Despite its rich performance culture, Brooklyn remains underrepresented in theater history, eclipsed in fame by the well-known theaters of Manhattan. One of the most populous areas in America, Brooklyn has been an artistic home to actors, playwrights, directors, and impresarios for centuries. That said, there is a dearth of accessible information and scholarship on Brooklyn theaters. My objective was to update an ongoing mapping project, The City Performs, to include information and images of theater buildings from Brooklyn. The Great Famine of 1315 Famine and the Irish Potato Famine, despite their differences, had similar underlying factors of land management and overpopulation paired with an environmental catalyst, and also show that governmental response has the potential to both cause and prevent a famine, but only if the scale of the problem is limited. In 1869, prompted by his work in differential equations, Sophus Lie wondered about categorizing what he called “closed systems of commutative transformations,” while around the same time, Wilhelm Killing’s work on non-Euclidean geometry encountered related topics. As mathematicians recognized this as a division of abstract algebra, the area became known as “continuous transformation groups," but we now refer to them as Lie groups.

文化絶非一成不變的，此在時間和空間之兩端，俱可體會中國文化與時俱進，它在各個時代分别借用不同區域的文化資源，而匯總起來就形成整體的中國文化。中國古代任何時期士人或政治人物都具有兩面性，他既是傳統的，又是現實的，所謂傳統就指他受某種區域或學派的思想學術之熏染，所謂現實乃指其人現實處境中的具體反應，而此種人生際遇下的現實表現又必然與其文化傳承存在著某種關聯，或者説其人所受文化觀念之影響又鮮活地體現在其人生應對之間，尤其面臨巨大挑戰時候，其言行舉止必然與其人知識結構、學術積累及思想意識保持一定程度的契合，而《世説新語·言語》某條所記述王坦之、伏滔和習鑿齒三者之間的對話，恰好牽涉三晋、齊地與荆楚的歷史文化之歧異和衝突，而此三者又與秦、漢、魏晋三個時代依稀有著對應關係，所以既是時間的流轉，又屬空間理念之此消彼長，由此入手，揭示此三地文化歷史之記憶與分歧，亦涉獵中國文化版圖之犖犖大端，或藉以呈現朝代更替間的必然性邏輯，而此種分析和研究也既屬歷史的推流溯源，又可一窺接受文化路徑依賴的王、伏、習三者之不同的現實處境和内心世界。

Chinese culture advances by drawing cultural resources from different regions at different times, which come together to constitute its totality. Scholars and officials in ancient times were both traditional and realistic: the former meaning that they were influenced by the scholarship of a certain region or school of thought; the latter referring to their responses to their immediate realities. The field of surgical aortic repair has advanced significantly over time, transitioning from aneurysm ligation to homografts, then to Dacron grafts, and now endovascular procedures. With new endovascular technologies emerging, they are likely to dominate the field of aortic surgery, but surgeons must exercise caution and not abandon their open-surgery skills. Open repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery continues to be a durable operation. As the field continues to evolve, further research is needed to advance this complex surgical endeavor.

Ruthie Cohen is a second generation American, with her paternal grandparents immigrating from Poland. When she was born, her family lived at 2805 Sedgwick Avenue, but moved nearby to another two-family home at 2805 Webb Avenue. She remembers how her immediate neighborhood and school was predominantly Jewish, but Italians and Irish also lived nearby and attended parochial schools. Cohen felt very little antisemitism from them. She was the youngest of four children in a relatively observant family.

Cohen’s father was a teacher who was very involved in the larger community, and education and tolerance were important values in her family. …

In three recent cases, the constitutional concepts of history and tradition have played important roles in the reasoning of the Supreme Court. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization relied on history and tradition to overrule Roe v. Wade. New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen articulated a history and tradition test for the validity of laws regulating the right to bear arms recognized by the Second Amendment. Kennedy v. Bremerton School District looked to history and tradition in formulating the test for the consistency of state action with the Establishment Clause.

These cases raise important questions about …

This study sheds light on the history of the Mazruʿi State in the Mombasa Island in East Africa, from its establishment in 1739 AD until the end of the rule of the Busaidi in 1837 AD. The study aims to understand the political conflicts and competition between the Mazruʿis and the Sultan of Omani, Said bin Sultan, regarding sovereignty over the East African coast.
