The idea for this thesis was conceived out of the question that if history judeges a man to be truly great, could the essential lines and nature of the greatness be seen through a thoroughly hostile opposition prase. The man is Abraham Lincoln. The press consists of The Charleston Mercury and The Charleston Daily Courier, oth active South Carolina daily newspapers during the Presidential campaign of 1869. When it was learned that these newspapers represented opposite and rather polarized extremes within the socio-political attitude loosely described as "Southern Democrat," the purpose of this paper expanded into an editorial comparison of …

Oil, Diplomacy And Intervention: A Study Of United States Petroleum Interests In Mexico, 1917-20, Dennis J. O'Brien

Diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico have been without major incident in recent years. Twenty-five years ago, however, the seizure of oil properties belonging to United States interests in Mexico climaxed a bitter twenty year struggle between the powerful foreign petroleum interests and Mexico. The first phase of that struggle began with the Constitution of 1917 and resulted in strained relations between the two nations. The part that vested interests played in this controversy is little known and provides interesting insight into the use of public opinion to sway United States foreign policy.

Jan Christian Smuts of South Africa was one of the most remarkable and interesting personalities of the past century. Although he came from a small, and in some ways, backward country, his influence spread throughout much of the world. In his lifetime of eighty years, 1870-1950, he had several careers. Although his profession was the law, he was also, at various times, a soldier, a statesman, a diplomat, a scientist, and a philosopher. He served as a general officer in three wars and helped to found two world peace organizations: the League of Nations and the United Nations. Many aspects …

The attitude of important British newspapers such as The Times, Morning Post, and Saturday Review toward the American Civil War has, of course, been the subject of many articles and books. These newspapers served as the mouth-pieces for the aristocratic classes and represented one section of public opinion favoring the South. A little-known group of newspaprs fought for the side of the North. These were the local dailies, which, to a greater or lesser degree, reflected the attitude of their readers--workingmen. The object of this paper is to present a survey of soldier life in the American Revolutionary Army. Although the study might be labeled "social history", the researcher believes that history is the product of all the kaleidoscopic events of the past, and that no phenomena exerts an influence of undue proportions. History is alive. History provides the continuing link between the vast "eons" of the past and the remarkable shortness of the "present."

The basis for this Senior Scholar paper is the secondary power of atomic energy- its interweaving effects in government policy and in the attitudes of the government and society toward the scientist. Throughout the paper I have presented a picture of the meaning of science, the scientific personality, the changes in science which are linked with social and governmental changes, and the clash of the government with science, as exemplified by the security hearing of the leading atomic scientist J. Only a few hardy men had ventured into America's intermountain west prior to the year 1847. Arriving in this year, the Mormons, under Brigham Young, slowly conquered parts of the Great Basin and within a few years had produced a self-sustaining agricultural economy. production of a surplus in farm products awaited only the emergence of a "foreign" market. Although several studies exist in French on the French and English literature of Morocco up to the twentieth century, nothing of a similar nature is extant for books on the country in English. Moreover, no previous study included twentieth century English and American books. A survey of the serious works on Morocco reveals that that country has been generally neglected by American and English scholars as an area for Investigation.
