Throughout the history of the Mormon movement, certain members or groups of members, have exercised free agency in the form of dissent against the direction which the prophet of that church chose to lead his movement. The form of this dissent varied but the theme was usually quite consistant: a demand for moderation. For many of these dissenters the extremes of Mormon doctrine seemed to take them out of touch with prevailing American values.

The purpose of this study is to present the origin and development of the San Juan Mission in southeastern Utah in its work with Indian people, principally since 1940. One of the responsibilities of the San Juan Mission was to teach the Indian people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is also the purpose of this study to show what has been accomplished in regard to the original call and also determine what remains to be completed. Traditionally, improvements in the quality of life in Britain resulted from the temporary fusion of sometimes opposite interests which spurred Parliamentary action. Therefore, reform was rarely a party issue. Each reform question was treated separately and never as a part of a body of similar measures. Individuals were free to support or oppose particular reforms according to their own interests and motivations. The result of this lack of strong consistent reformist sentiment was a pattern of piece-meal legislative action with a notable absence of comprehensive social planning. The First World War, however, brought new challenges to British society. As the …

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the factors contributing to the rise and subsequent decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Upper Canada. Although the time period of this study spans from 1830 until 1850, the principal years of activity were from 1832 until 1840. An effort is made to discuss any major location wherein the Church made substantial progress.

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, Spain’s over-seas empire was crumbling. After ten years of warfare (1868-1878) Cuba had again submitted to uneasy Spanish control but the world-wide depression of 1893, combined with the devastating effects on Cuba’s economy of the United States tariff of 1894, increased unrest to the point where armed revolt broke out again in February of 1895.

Kelsey, Texas, was a flourishing Latter-day Saint colony for more than a quarter of a century, beginning at a time when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was encouraging its converts to stay in the mission field. Kelsey was an attempt by the Church to provide Latter-day Saints from the southern states a safe haven from persecution which existed in the South, while leaving them in a geographic area in which they could be comfortable.

After living under the dominance of the white planters, the Negroes of Jamaica and other West Indian Islands became dependent on their masters for all that was necessary for the sustenance of life. However, when the atrocities of slavery became unbearable, and the sugar industry was no longer profitable to the masses of the British population, it became necessary to end the system. The conviction of the British government was that there must be a gradual emancipation in order to acquaint the Negroes with the life and responsibilities of free men. The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.
The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …

The years since the Civil War have witnessed vigorous efforts, not always successful, on the part of black and white Americans to elevate substantially the position of the black American in sociey. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the most dramatic and significant legislation, on a national level, which attacked segregation and discrimination, but it was not the first of its kind. The Civil Rights Act passed in 1964 contained many of the same provisions that had been enacted, or proposed but deleted, in a similar Civil Rights Act in 1875.
