Rustic Warriors: Warfare And The Provincial Soldier On The Northern Frontier, 1689-1748, Steven Charles Eames
Rustic Warriors: Warfare And The Provincial Soldier On The Northern Frontier, 1689-1748, Steven Charles Eames
Doctoral Dissertations
Utilizing the period of the early French wars as a whole, this study examines the experience of war on the northern frontier and its impact on the provincial soldier. Part One explores the warfare itself, with chapters on the initiation of war and the New England military system, garrison houses and community defense, provincial forts, patrols and raids, expeditions, and logistical problems associated with weapons and ammunition. The second part discusses the provincial soldiers themselves, including recruiting, officers, training and fighting spirit, the physical experience of combat and the tactical response to Indian warfare, wounds and medical care, and the …
Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore
Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the history of the United States individuals and groups have used education as a means to improve their status in America--economically, politically, and socially. When slaves gained their freedom between 1862 and 1865, they, too, looked to education as a way to ameliorate the harmful effects of over two hundred years of slavery. In New Orleans freedmen and those free before the war viewed education almost as a panacea to the many problems within the black community. Black New Orleanians realized, of course, that the gains derived from education would take time to filter throughout the entire community. During …

The Future Of Liberal Legal Scholarship, Ronald K.L. Collins, David M. Skover
The Future Of Liberal Legal Scholarship, Ronald K.L. Collins, David M. Skover
Michigan Law Review
Earl Warren is dead.
A generation of liberal legal scholars continues, nevertheless, to act as if the man and his Court preside over the present. While this romanticism is understandable, it exacts a high price in a world transformed.
The following commentary is a reconstructive criticism written from the perspective of two liberals concerned about the future of "legal liberalism." We present our views as a commentary to emphasize their preliminary character; they represent our current assessment of where liberals stand and where they might redirect their energies.
The Foundations Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Jose M. Roman C.M.
The Foundations Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Jose M. Roman C.M.
Vincentian Studies
By tracing history of the Congregation’s establishments and houses, how they were made, and how they were supported, we can appreciate Vincent de Paul as an organizer and administrator and understand the Congregation’s development. Vincent’s principles for foundations were to never take the initiative in establishing them, to accept only stable ones, and to start with small ones to build up larger ones. He was careful to ensure that the Congregation and its works would be self-sufficient. Initiative for foundations came largely from bishops, but also from wealthy laity, teams of founders, and royalty. Foundations replicated the Congregation’s initial one, …
