Daniel Muir-An Obituary, John Muir
John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)
Daniel Muir died Oct. 6th, 1885, in Kansas City, Mo., at the residence of his daughter, Joann, in the 82d year of his age. Daniel Muir was always a man of marked character and will be remembered by many of his old neighbors and friends in Portage and in the town of Buffalo, where he was well-known as a pioneer, having come direct from Scotland with his family and settled there in the year 1849. Few lives were more restless and eventful than his, few more steadily toilsome and full of enthusiastic endeavor, ever fighting his way onward unwearied toward …

History Of Law Class Of 1883 Of Michigan University, Charles I. York
Yearbooks & Class Year Publications
The origin of this book, which is a "new departure," and ever to be remembered as a production of the La.w Class of 1883 of the Michigan University, without a precedent from which to conceive its peculiarities of style, is as follows: In a convention hel1882, to put in nomination Senior Officers, the author was nominated for Class Historian, to be balloted for in about a week thereafter. During the time intervening between nomination nnd election day, the author imagined his election and began to inquire of the oflice, which led to his conception that a departure from the usual …

64 A Southern California Paradise. into these grounds, when two years old, are fifteen inches in diameter and forty feet in height. Dates, pine apples, bananas, and custard apples may be successfully, if not profitably, grown without artificial heat, in glass houses, or in cheaper structures of lath and cotton cloth. The beauty of the gardens in the San Gabriel Valley, in the blooming season of either bulbous plants or roses, is becoming celebrated. One resident in Pasadena counts in her parterre over one hundred varieties of the queen of flowers. The stately calla masses itself around the water basins …

But neither these nor the glaciers, nor the bits of brown meadow and moorland that occur here and there, are large enough to make any marked impression upon the mighty wilderness of Alps." Speaking of the "Palisades" he says: "The eye is first caught by a row of exceedingly sharp and slender spires, which rise openly to a height of about a thousand feet, from a series of short, residual glaciers that lean back against their bases; their fantastic sculpture and the unrelieved …
