Reminiscences Of Joseph Leconte., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

REMINISCENCES OF JOSEPH EE CONTE. BY JOHN MUIR. "T)EYOND all wealth, honor, or even health, is the attach- •*-* ment we form to noble souls." I have been one of Joseph Ee Conte's innumerable friends and admirers for more than thirty years. It was in Yosemite Valley that I first met him, not far from the famous rock beneath the shadow of which he died. With a party of his students he was making his first excursion into the high Sierra, and it was delightful to see with what eager, joyful, youthful enthusiasm he reveled in the sublime beauty of …

I. j 304 Hunting Big Bedwoods. may be set down to the not yet closed account of reconstruction. This, too, was a crime which in old times was not known in the South. Among the better signs is the increasing feeling that it is best, on the whole, to leave every section to work out its own problems. Many years ago Mr. Seward said of the negro race: " They will find their place ; they must take their level. The laws of political economy will determine their position and the relation of the two races. Congress cannot contravene those." …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

PIFTBEH IN TOSH rainbow: IN MIDST OP TOS JoAn Muir has written a mag-' nihcent description of a great earthquake he once witnessed in the YoSemite Valley. It is as good apiece oiprose descriptive of any grand cataclysmic event as has ever been penned, and should go into the school readers and scientific text books. The article is published in the "Atlantic Magazine" for April. It is copyrighted, but is republished here by permission for the benefit of the readers of the Sunday "Examiner." The object of the article is to show how the grand talus system of the Yosemite …

556 Foimtains and Streams.of Yosemite National Park. to hate you. He is of a slow sort, but he may have bided his time! " The bravery of the hypocrite counted for much. Paul Jones stared at him for a moment, wounded to the quick, and speechless. Then, " Leave me, you sneaking thief ! " he hissed between his teeth. " Am I to be baited by a coward like you ? We '11 see who 's the better man ! " But at this lamentable juncture Lieutenant Hall stepped between, and by dint of hard pushing urged the offending …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

COLUMBIA GLACIER NOTES ON THE PACIFIC COAST GLACIERS BY JOHN MUIR HE glaciers that load the mountains of the Pacific Coast form a belt about two thousand miles long, of which the south half is mostly narrow and broken, the north continuous and broad. On the Sierra Nevada of California between latitudes 2,6° 30' and 390 there are sixty-five small glaciers, distributed singly or in groups of three or four on the northern slopes of the highest peaks at an elevation of 11,000 to 12,000 feet above the sea. These slow-flowing, ragged- edged, residual masses, few of which are more …

Sunday Examiner /i\a§azii}ec mersoini la th (Copyright, 1900, by the "Atlantic Monthly." Reprinted by permission. INCE Emerson was so soon to vanish I concluded to stop with him. He hardly spoke a word all the evening, yet it was a great pleasure simply to be near him, warming in the light of his face as at a Are. In the morning we rode up the trail through a noble forest of pine and fir into the famous.Mariposa Grove, and stayed an hour or two, mostly in ordinary- tourist fashion—looking at the biggest giants, measuring them With a tape line, liding …

The Wild Gardens of the Yosemite Park. 167 world; the doors stand wide open. ' There's somethin' of us that must still live on ; we 've got to join both worlds together an' live in one but for the other.' The doctor said that to me one day, an' I never could forget it; he said 't was in one o' his old doctor's books." We sat together in silence in the warm little room; the rain dropped heavily from the eaves, and the sea still roared, but the high wind had done blowing. We heard the far complaining …

Lake Tahoe In Winter., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

LAKE TAHOE IN WINTER.* ; By John Muir. * Reprint of a letter published in the San Francisco Bulletin in 1878. The winter glory of the Sierra! How little is known of it! Californians admire descriptions of the Swiss Alps, reading with breathless interest how ice and snow load their sublime heights, and booming avalanches sweep in glorious array through their crowded forests, while our own icy, snow-laden mountains, with their unrivaled forests, loom unnoticed along our eastern horizon. True, only mountaineers may penetrate their snow-blocked fastnesses to behold them in all their white wild grandeur, but to every healthy …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

492 The Perplexities of a College President. The Forests of the Yosemite Park. 493 of our colleges and universities to-day is such that the president is easily overridden in all these matters by any faculty committee into whose hands work that is properly executive is generally committed. The result of all this is the present only too general attempt to build a comfortable house on a six-by-nine foundation, to secure satisfactory technical training with narrow and insufficient preparation, to attempt to establish university methods with students whose preparation to work under such methods has been little more than academic, and …

Letter From Hary Fielding Reid To John Muir, 1900 Feb 20 ., Hary Fielding Reid

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

[letterhead]

Feb 20, 1900

My dear Mr. Muir,

I have seen quite a number of the members of the Harriman expedition and they tell me that great changes have taken place in the glaciers of Glacier Bay. Mr. [Sarmett?] is to send me his map of the end of the Muir glacier and Mr. Gilbert has sent me photographs of Hugh Miller & Reid Inlets. Did you succeed in deciding whether [Render?], Carroll and Geikie glaciers have changed since your visit in 1896? and did you notice changes in any other glaciers? I am now making up my annual report. …

Letter From Eliza S. Hendricks To John Muir, 1900 Feb 1 ., Eliza S. Hendricks

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

1127 N. Meridian Street,
Indianapolis, February 1, 1900.

My dear Mr. Muir:

I feel impelled to write a few lines to you this morning. I wish to tell you that the "white grandmother"-the "Lily grandmother," as you, tenderly and poetically, have designated her in your letters, has gone away. At six o'clock January 29-two days ago-she passed into the "Silent Land" after eight months of illness. Her death at the very last-after much weariness, and at times acute suffering, was peaceful and painless-like a sunset. I need not tell you that through the long sickness, she was patient, cheerful, heroic. …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

THE jfW ATLANTIC MONTHLY: aga?me of literature, Science, art, anD politico Vol. LXXXIV. — AUGUST, 1899. — No. DII. THE YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK. Of all the mountain ranges I have climbed, I like the Sierra Nevada the best. Though extremely rugged, with its main features on the grandest scale in height and depth, it is nevertheless easy of access and hospitable ; and its marvelous beauty, displayed in striking and alluring' forms, wooes the admiring wanderer on and on, higher and higher, charmed and enchanted. Benevolent, solemn, fateful, pervaded with divine light, every landscape glows like a countenance hallowed in …
