States And Foreign Relations, John M. Matthews May 1921

States And Foreign Relations, John M. Matthews

Michigan Law Review

The conduct of a nation's foreign relations may be affected to a considerable extent by its internal governmental organization. Generally speaking, a more energetic and effective foreign policy is possible for a nation whose government is characterized by unity and coherence. This is true not only with reference to the relations between the -departments of the central government, but also with reference to the relations between the central government and the local or state governments. In countries whose government is based on the federal plan, therefore, an important question to be considered is that as to the extent, if any, …

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden May 1921

History Of The Churches Of Louisville With Special Reference To Slavery., Homer E. Wickenden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the one hundred and forty years of Louisville's existence, it has grown from a log cabin settlement with no churches to a city with 269 churches and church property valued at over $30,000,000. It is impossible to measure the moral and religious force that they have exerted on the city. It can best be appreciated when one thinks of what the city would be without them. Few of us would care to live in such a city. In the field of education, Louisville churches have contributed much. Some of the first schools in the city were conducted by ministers, …

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

JOHN MUIRΓÇöPILGRIM SOUL BY CHARLOTTE KELLOGG This is a personal record of the great naturalist and scientist who spent the long years of his life saving for America the heart of her continentΓÇöher mountains and forests. Mrs. Kellogg knew him when she was a little girl in California. Her picture of him is a vivid tribute. His figure looms indeed against the skyline as one of the great men of A merka. TANDING against the sky-line, on the crest of his beloved Sierra, John Muir is the most conspicuous figure in the mountain world of America. Though his body has …

History Of Michigan Constitutional Provision Prohibiting A General Revision Of The Laws, W L. Jenks Apr 1921

History Of Michigan Constitutional Provision Prohibiting A General Revision Of The Laws, W L. Jenks

Michigan Law Review

Alone among the states of the Union, Michigan has, since i85o, pr6hibited any general revision of the laws and permits only a compilation of laws in force without alteration. As practically all the neighboring states, as well as New York, from which much of the early legislatiorf of Michigan was derived, have continued to revise their statutes from time to time, it may be interesting to see why Michigan alone has thought it desirable not only to stop the practice which it followed until I85o, but to prevent effectually its legislature from ever attempting it in the future.

Studies In The Sierra. No. Vii. - Mountain Building., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

STUDIES IN THE SIERRA* By John Muir no. vii. mountain-building * THIS study of mountain-building refers particularly to that portion of the range embraced between latitudes 36┬░ 3o' and 30┬░. It is about 200 miles long, sixty wide, and attains an elevation along its axis of from 8000 to nearly 15,000 feet above the level of the sea. The individual mountains that are distributed over this vast area, whether the lofty and precipitous alps of the summit, the more beautiful and highly specialized domes and mounts dotted over the undulating flanks, or the huge bosses and angles projecting horizontally from …

Studies In The Sierra. No. Vi.-Formation Of Soils., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

68 Sierra Club Bulletin could not expect to live more than ten years, because of some forecast by an eminent man as to seventy-five years being his limit of age. It came as no surprise to hear that this master in the realm of geology and physiography, this teacher revered and beloved by his disciples, this man of the broad sympathies and of the great heart, had passed away shortly after believing that at a time when his maximum effort was needed in the cause of humanity he had passed his zenith and had entered instead upon his days of …

Studies In The Sierra. No. V.-Post-Glacial Denudation., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

STUDIES IN THE SIERRA* By John Muir no. v. post-glacial denudation 9 WHEN Nature lifted the ice-sheet from the mountains she may well be said not to have turned a new leaf, but to have made a new one of the old. Throughout the unnumbered seasons of the glacial epoch the range lay buried, crushed, and sunless. In the stupendous denudation to which it was then subjected, all its pre-glacial features disappeared. Plants, animals, and landscapes were wiped from its flanks like drawings from a blackboard, and the vast page left smooth and clean, to be repictured with young life …

Sociological Interpretation Of Law, Joseph H. Drake Jun 1918

Sociological Interpretation Of Law, Joseph H. Drake

Articles

It is not the purpose of this paper to essay a definition of either of the formidable words in the title. The object is rather to call attention away from the metaphysical question, what is law? to the sociological question, how may we best attain justice in the administration of law? and, by the aid of some examples from history and comparative law, to justify as legal and constitutional the sociological method of interpretation. That such justification is necessary is evident from the fact that although the dictum of Mr. Justice. HOLMES in the dissenting opinion in Lochner v. New …

Studies In The Sierra. No. Iv.-Glacial Denudation., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

STUDIES IN THE SIERRA By John Muir NO. IV. GLACIAL DENUDATION GLACIAL denudation is one of the noblest and simplest manifestations of sun-power. Ocean water is lifted in vapor, crystallized into snow, and sown broadcast upon the mountains. Thaw and frost, combined with the pressure of its own weight, change it to ice, which, although in appearance about as hard and inflexible as glass, immediately begins to flow back toward the sea whence it came, and at a rate of motion about equal to that of the hour-hand of a watch. Fig. i. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. I, …
