Crete, Neb, March 28th/83
Dear brother and Sister
You will have received my last card, written the day Maggie and I arrived in Lincoln, We were not very much fatigued, and on feeling nicely rested, indeed the journey proved very pleasant, everything going smoothly with the exception of our being detained about four hours, by the breaking of a wheel, and so throwing one of the trucks partly off the track, the engine went on to Green River, for a wheel, and help, and we were able to start again sooner than we expected. This made us somewhat nervous …

Chicago, July 23, I880.
Prof. J. LeConte,
Dear Sir:
Although engaged heavily in the practice of surgery, I have amused myself by studying the boulder drift for many years, being led to it by the digging of ten miles of tunnels through it by Chicago engineers, by the great number of sections exposed by cuttings on railways centering here, and by the several hundred miles of section on the lake shores kept fresh by the erosion of the waves. I am impressed that most geologists err in consequence of want of sufficient study of drift …

My dear wife.
All goes well. For a few hours we will be in Victoria. The voyage thus far has been singularly calm & uneventful. Leaving you is the only event that has marked the trip & it is marked sorely but I shall make haste to you & reach [you ere?] you have the time to grieve & weary. If you will only be calm & cherry all will be better for my short spell of ice work. The sea has been very smooth, nevertheless Mr Magee …

Dear Friend John
A couple of years have passed away since I have heard from you it is my own fault too as you wrote last. This letter is for the sake of the reply. I want to hear from you and to brighten up the smouldering embers of old confidence and friendship. It is almost accidental that I am now writing. I am away from home superintending the pulling some machinery in one of our large and well appointed sawmills and I am overtaken by Sunday and of course have time on my hands. And the thought …
