I didn't know who the lady was but I had previously spoke of Mr Grunsky as a distinguished engineer. I replied that I supposed she referred to Mr Grunsky but on such a subject …

English Law As An Exponent Of English History, Edson R. Sunderland Jan 1909

English Law As An Exponent Of English History, Edson R. Sunderland

Articles

It is not my purpose to unduly emphasize the light which the study of the laws of a people throws upon its character and development. The teaching of history should be broad enough to recognize the importance of all sides of national life. But I believe there has never been a sufficient appreciation of the real wealth of suggestive and illuminating material which is contained in the history of English law. For the English have been pre-eminently a legal race. In the study of Roman History Roman Law has always occupied a prominent place. The Romans made their reputation, so …

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

San Francisco, Cal., Dec.. 21 ,1908.

TO ALL LOVERS OF NATURE AND SCENERY:-

The Yosemite National Park was created in 1890 in order that the unrivaled aggregation of scenic features of this great natural wonderland should be preserved in pure wildness for all time for the benefit Of the entire nation: the Yosemite Valley was already preserved in a State Park, and the National Park was created primarily to protect the Hetch-Hetchy Valley and Tuolumne Meadows from invasion. The Hetch-Hetchy Valley is a wonderfully exact counterpart of the great Yosemite, not only in its crystal river, sublime cliffs and exquisite …

Dear Papa

I was glad to get your second good letter from the mountains and know you are enjoying it so. Im glad you are taking such a good rest.
Everything is cheerful here. Im well and happy as ever and still enjoy the heat. It hasnt been so hot this last week but still holds it's own. There was a big fire in Daggett night before last and burned up half the business side of town. The fire started, no one knows how, in the Hotel, and as everything is so desperately dry here it …

do you know about that?
The F.s are all well. Buel finds his greatest pleasure in teasing me. He's a nice boy, at the "pin-feather age" according to Bro. Dick, but is an awful tease - something like Thos. R. in that respect. He calls me "Swiftwater Bill" - threatens dire things to my cats (I have two) puts salt in my coffee, steals my choicest food off my plate, and pours water over me.
A few evenings ago I came in late and very thirsty. I said as much and received a very generous drink

To Theodore Roosevelt[Martinez, CaliforniaApril 21, 1908]Dear Mr. President:I am anxious that the Yosemite National Park may be saved from all sorts of commercialism & marks of man's work other than the roads, hotels, etc., required to make its wonders & blessings available. For as far as I have seen there is not in all the wonderful Sierra, or indeed in the world, another so grand & wonderful & useful a block of Nature's mountain handiwork. There is now under consideration, as doubtless you well know, an application of San Francisco Supervisors for the use of Hetch Hetchy Valley & Lake Eleanor …
