Dear Sir:

Thinking that very possibly you may be pleased to receive information respecting the legislative situation relating to the so-called Raker bill, which grants certain rights connected with Hetch Hetchy to the City of San Francisco, I would say that the bill, as you may know, was passed by the House of Representatives about September 1st last, is now before the Senate, is to be …

Dear Johnson:

I think your plan of battle excellent & we must win
1 As to my going to Chicago & Wash. I may not be able for several reasons. but some of us will.
(2) We are hard at work on Women's Clubs
(3) The San Joquin folk I fear can't do us much more good or ill than they have already done
(4) Nothing to be got out of Lake Eleanor squabbles.

Martinez Oct. 1, 1913

Dear Johnson

Don't fret about Sullivan, I never looked for any effective help from his company & warned Mr Parsons not to count on that engineer's report on the Mokelumne, but on the simple truth that there was no need & could be none to justify the invasion of the Yosemite Park for water power or water for S. F. or any other city.
Keep cherrily bravely on
I think we must best them yet Don't fret about expenses
With many thanks

Ever thine

John Muir

Grabbing The Hetch Hetchy., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

GRABBING THE HETCH HETCHY. With very few exceptions, the newspapers of the country are protesting against the proposed gift of the Hetch Hetchy valley to the city of San Francisco for a water supply. "Of course the San Francisco newspapers champion the project, and so do a few others. But the- overwhelming sentiment, taking the country through, Is manifestly in opposition. ..This valley is now a national park, reserved for that purpose on account of its marvellous scenic beauty. It is the property of the nation, not of the. city Of San Francisco, nor the stale of California. The engineers …
