Status, Technology, And Rural Tradition In Western Pennsylvania: Excavations At The Shaeffer Farm Site, John Bedell, Michael Petraglia, Thomas Plummer Oct 2013

Status, Technology, And Rural Tradition In Western Pennsylvania: Excavations At The Shaeffer Farm Site, John Bedell, Michael Petraglia, Thomas Plummer

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Archaeological excavations have been performed at the Shaeffer Farm site (36AR410), a rural residence in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Documentary research and archaeological investigations indicate that the site was mainly occupied in the 19th century, probably by the Shaeffer family during its earliest occupation phase, and later by tenants. The site consisted of a dry-laid stone foundation and artifacts dating from approximately 1830 until shortly after 1900. The artifacts included architectural, domestic, faunal, and personal items. The study provided information about the lives of rural middle- and lower-class residents in western Pennsylvania, focusing on the housing, diet, recreation, and social aspirations …

Battlefield Palynology: Reinterpretation Of British Earthworks, Saratoga National Historical Park, Stillwater, New York, Gerald K. Kelso, Dick Ping Hsu

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Pollen analysis was done on a core through a linear mound formerly identified as a 1777 British earthwork at Saratoga National Historical Park. Documents indicate that the British earthwork was built in a forest in a sparsely settled region. Pollen data record a 71-year reforestation sequence under the mound, indicating that it cannot be a Revolutionary War earthwork.

The Archaeology Of Provincial Officers' Huts At Crown Point State Historic Site, Charles L. Fisher Oct 2013

The Archaeology Of Provincial Officers' Huts At Crown Point State Historic Site, Charles L. Fisher

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Archaeological survey of the site of a proposed maintenance building at Crown Point State Historic Site located the remains of three historic structures, identified as temporary housing of 18th-century soldiers during the initial construction of the extensive British fortifications, which began in 1759. These archaeological features and associated objects are evidence of both the material conditions of the soldiers and the social relationships among them. The spatial organization of the encampement separated the Provincial regiments from the British regulars. Within a single Provincial regiment's camp, the officers' huts were separated from their troops. The small objects recovered archaeologically are viewed …

Geophysical Exploration In The U.S. National Parks, Bruce Bevan Oct 2013

Geophysical Exploration In The U.S. National Parks, Bruce Bevan

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Results from several dozen geophysical surveys at national parks in the United States are summarized here. Illustrations from both succesfful and unsuccessful surveys show the advantages and limitations of geophysical exploration. Ground-penetrating radar and magnetometer surveys have been particularly suitable at sites on the coastal plain of the eastern U.S. While filled cellars can be quite easy to locate, a thinner scatter of rubble from a structure can be difficult to isolate. Cities provide almost impossible conditions for the success of a survey. Accumulations of debris in pits can be located, but privies and wells appear to be more difficult …

The Lost Opportunity For Ethiopia: The Failure To Move Toward Democratic Governance, Theodor Vestal Oct 2013

The Lost Opportunity For Ethiopia: The Failure To Move Toward Democratic Governance, Theodor Vestal

International Journal of African Development

During the critical five year period leading up to the velvet revolution and the overthrow of Haile Selassie’s regime, there were missed opportunities to bring about peaceful change in Ethiopia’s governance. This paper analyzes the events of this period that led to the rise of the Derg and the revolutionary changes that followed and speculates on when strategic steps could have been taken to avoid the catastrophic events that ensued in 1974.

A Preliminary Report On The Excavation Of A 19th-Century Derelict Vessel In Cape Neddick, Maine: The Southern New Jersey Coasting Schooner Annabella, Stefan H. Claesson Oct 2013

A Preliminary Report On The Excavation Of A 19th-Century Derelict Vessel In Cape Neddick, Maine: The Southern New Jersey Coasting Schooner Annabella, Stefan H. Claesson

Northeast Historical Archaeology

In 1995, the Insistute of Maritime History conducted the archaeological investigation of a 19th-century coasting schooner, Annabella, in Cape Neddick, Maine. This type of craft, though ubiquitous on the eastern seaboard in the 19th century, has not been documented in an archaeological setting to date in New England. Maine played a pivotal role in America's economy, supplying the southern states and Caribbean Islands with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of raw materials such as timber, stone, ice, lime, and agricultural goods. This vessel was primarily involved in the transportation of cordwood along the east coast of the United States. Its heavily-built, …

Anatomy Of An Almshouse Complex, Sherene Baugher, Edward J. Lenik Oct 2013

Anatomy Of An Almshouse Complex, Sherene Baugher, Edward J. Lenik

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The focus of this paper is to determine the age and function of a partial building foundation uncovered during archaeological testing in City Hall Park, New York City. The authors use evidence from historical maps, prints, and documents, as well as archaeological evidence, to determine the function of the building. The evidence suggests that the foundation is an outbuilding that was part of an 18th-century colonial almshouse complex. The foundation appears to be the remains of the almshouse kitchen.

Interpreting Social Organization At Industrial Sites: An Example From The Ohio Trap Rock Mine, David B. Landon Oct 2013

Interpreting Social Organization At Industrial Sites: An Example From The Ohio Trap Rock Mine, David B. Landon

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Historical archaeologists have frequently tried to interpret aspects of the social organization of production from artifacts at industrial sites. These studies have encompassed a variety of issues: the role of skilled immigrants, the effects of de-skilling work, and the ways workers resisted work discipline or used material culture to express their autonomy. Some recent studies protray the organization of production and the forces of industrialization as the overarching determinants of domestic assemblage pattering, while other studies emphasize factors such as household composition, household lifecycle, and the gender organization of labor. This paper reviews several studies of artifact assemblages from industrial …

Early Military Sites Archaeology In New York State: An Interview With Richard J. Koke, David R. Starbuck

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Military sites archaeology in New York State originated in the early 20th cnetury with the pioneering work of William Calver and Reginald Bolton, working through the auspices of The New York Historical Society. One of their youngest associates was Richard J. Koke who later assembled many of their articles into the seminal volume, History Written with Pick and Shovel. Koke was one of the best military sites archaeologists of his day and has a superb recollection of what it was like to conduct archaeology in the 1930s. This article presents some of Koke's memories, based on two interviews conducted with …

From The Warehouses To The Canal By Rail Ca. 1830: The Lachine Canal, Montreal, Quebec, Pauline Desjardins

Northeast Historical Archaeology

During archaeological monitoring of the lower entrance of the Lachine Canal by the Corporation of the Old Port of Montreal, archaeologists obtained data spanning approximately 170 years of development in the area. Indeed, the original canal, built between 1821-1825, has seen many transformations in its dimensions and in the spatial organization of the adjacent installations. This article focuses on a particular finding related to the first period of the history of the canal: the remains of privately owned short wooden track lines used for transporting goods from the warehouses along Common Street to the canal during the years 1825 to …

Who's Been Drinking On The Railroad? Archaeological Excavations At The Central Railroad Of New Jersey's Lakehurst Shops, Richard Veit, Paul W. Schopp Oct 2013

Who's Been Drinking On The Railroad? Archaeological Excavations At The Central Railroad Of New Jersey's Lakehurst Shops, Richard Veit, Paul W. Schopp

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Archaeological excavations at the former shops of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, in Lakehurst (28-Oc-138), uncovered several large bottle caches within a 19th-century railroad maintenance facility. These caches, situated in clandestine locations within the plant, apparently reflect a considerable amount of on-the-job alcohol consumption by railroad workers. This surprising discovery and its implications for understanding turn-of-the-century workplace culture are explored.

Towards An Archaeology Of The Hudson River Ice Harvesting Industry, Wendy Elizabeth Harris, Arnold Pickman Oct 2013

Towards An Archaeology Of The Hudson River Ice Harvesting Industry, Wendy Elizabeth Harris, Arnold Pickman

Northeast Historical Archaeology

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, natural ice cut from the Hudson River provided the New York City metropolitan area with much of its supply. This article briefly examines the history and technology of this industry, and its impact on local workers, commuities, and landscapes. The documentary history and visible remains of three ice house sites are analyzed, with ice house technology viewed as an integrated system of production and transportation. Results suggest that archaeological examination of such sites can be used to study variations in ice industry technology and reveal features not mentioned in the documentary record. …

Telling Time For Archaeologists, George L. Miller, Patricia Samford, Ellen Shlasko, Andrew Madsen

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This essay presents an accumulation of data on the dates for common types of artifacts found on archaeological sites from the historical period. These dates come from a variety of sources and include a mix of types of dates. These dates are based on such things as patents, pattern registrations, dates when commercial production began, estimates of when production stopped, and the popularity ranges for various styles of wares based on makers' marks. The introductory essay discusses some of the problems in the sources of the dates presented.
