Stop Regulating Government Paperwork With More Government Paperwork, Joseph D. Condon
Stop Regulating Government Paperwork With More Government Paperwork, Joseph D. Condon
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
The Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) is an often-ignored law with a large impact. Federal agencies cannot ask the same questions of more than nine people or entities without submitting a proposed information collection to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review, a process that can take up to a year to complete. In an attempt to regulate the amount of paperwork foisted on the public, the PRA has created an enormous amount of paperwork for federal agencies—without any meaningful reduction in the paperwork burden faced by the public. Yet, likely because the burden of the PRA is …

Restoring American Statesmanship: A Citizen's Guide, John Shaw
Institute Publications
Restoring American Statesmanship: A Citizen's Guide offers a working definition of statesmanship, identifies its essential qualities, provides more than a dozen examples from American history, acknowledges current barriers to statesmanship, and suggests ways to re-establish statesmanship as an aspiration and goal in American political life.
"We endeavor to resurrect this critical concept from the dusty pages of history books and use it to illuminate and inspire public affairs in the United States," the guide says. "Our goal is to stimulate a vigorous discussion about statesmanship and reintroduce this concept into the political discourse."

Human Rights, Those Who Are Governed And The Legitimacy Of Law Enforcement, Lynn Rhodes
Comparative Civilizations Review
Most everyone, if not all of us, wants to be happy. Peace is a common denominator frequently sought. It is human nature to seek security, another word for happiness. Human Rights, as we know, are basic rights and freedoms that inherently belong to every person.

Segregation In The Galleries: A Reconsideration, Richard Primus
Segregation In The Galleries: A Reconsideration, Richard Primus
Michigan Law Review Online
When constitutional lawyers talk about the original meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment as applied to questions of race, they often men-tion that the spectators’ galleries in Congress were racially segregated when Congress debated the Amendment.1 If the Thirty-Ninth Congress practiced racial segregation, the thinking goes, then it probably did not mean to prohibit racial segregation.2 As an argument about constitutional interpretation, this line of thinking has both strengths and weaknesses. But this brief Essay is not about the interpretive consequences, if any, of segregation in the congressional galleries during the 1860s. It is about the factual claim that the galleries …
Pearls, People, And Power : Pearling And Indian Ocean Worlds, Pedro Machado, Steve Mullins, Joseph Christensen
Pearls, People, And Power : Pearling And Indian Ocean Worlds, Pedro Machado, Steve Mullins, Joseph Christensen
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating …

Research & Debate: Prediction, Wayne P. Hughes Jr.
Naval War College Review
The predictive power of experts, operations analysis, and the value of information are interwoven subjects that are hard to winnow down to an essence. Prediction is a big subject, so I have limited this article to what I know best: the operational and tactical domains of conventional warfare.

Resonance Of Bartolome De Las Casas’ Thoughts In Leonardo Boff’S Theology, Ramil R. Marcos
Resonance Of Bartolome De Las Casas’ Thoughts In Leonardo Boff’S Theology, Ramil R. Marcos
Loyola Papers
This paper examines the convergence between Boff’s theology and the thought of Bartolome de las Casas. The aim is to arrive at a way of understanding Trinitarian Theology which is both rooted in and relevant to people’s experiences. The paper highlights the vestiges of this relatively recent theology in the life and work of the great Dominican missionary, Bartolome de las Casas. It presents the striking similarity between the suffering and oppression experienced by the peoples of Latin America and the native Indians to the heart-wrenching contexts of our people today, which was further exacerbated by the pandemic. As such, …

Dark Love: Polish Identity And The Holocaust In Krzysztof Baczyński’S Poetry, Anna Michalik
Theses and Dissertations
Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, nom de plume “Jan Bugaj” (22 January 1921, Warsaw – 4 August 1944, Warsaw) was a Polish poet. In his short life Baczyński, who was killed at the age of 23 during the first days of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, had proven to be an individual of great talent and poetic maturity. After the war, the legend of Baczyński steadily grew. Today, he is recognized in Poland to be the greatest poet of the war generation. In the case of Baczyński, however, it needs to be acknowledged that many elements of his life have been manipulated by …

Thucydides In Pyongyang: Fear, Honor And Interests In The 1968 Pueblo Incident, Benjamin Young
Thucydides In Pyongyang: Fear, Honor And Interests In The 1968 Pueblo Incident, Benjamin Young
Research & Publications
Purpose: On January 23, 1968, North Korean naval forces captured a U.S spy ship, the USS Pueblo, off the coast of Wonsan. This incident nearly led to a second Korean War and heightened hostilities between the U.S and North Korean governments. This article demystifies the strategic thinking of Kim Il Sung’s regime and clarifies the reasoning behind Pyongyang’s risky undertaking in capturing the Pueblo and its crewmen as a rational and pragmatic action.
Design, Methodology, Approach: While the Pueblo crisis has been examined by a number of historians, this article which is based on former Eastern bloc archival documents and …
Linking Mission And Identity At The University Of Cincinnati, David Straddler
Linking Mission And Identity At The University Of Cincinnati, David Straddler
Freedom Center Journal
This essay traces the major shifts in UC’s mission and identity, keeping in mind the questions of who it serves, and what service it provides. These may seem rather straightforward concerns, especially for an institution that has had 200 years to hone its mission, but a quick review of UC’s history makes clear that the university community has rarely reached a consensus on these central questions. Just as important, in the recent past, conceptions of UC’s mission and identity have become especially muddled. What follows addresses some broad shifts in the role of higher education in the United States, but …

Datam: Digital Approaches To Teaching The Ancient Mediterranean, Sebastian Heath
Digital Press Books
DATAM: Digital Approaches to Teaching the Ancient Mediterranean provides a series of new critical studies that explore digital practices for teaching the Ancient Mediterranean world at a wide range of institutions and levels. These practical examples demonstrate how gaming, coding, immersive video, and 3D imaging can bridge the disciplinary and digital divide between the Ancient world and contemporary technology, information literacy, and student engagement. While the articles focus on Classics, Ancient History, and Mediterranean archaeology, the issues and approaches considered throughout this book are relevant for anyone who thinks critically and practically about the use of digital technology in the …
