Letter From Lawrence W. Quate To Dr. Jane C. Dirks-Edmunds, Lawrence W. Quate

Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents

This letter from Dr. Lawrence W. Quate is one of many such letters received by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds. Dirks-Edmunds consulted a number of experts to help identify the specimens she collected while conducting fieldwork. Quate was an expert on midges, also known as psychodids. Many of the colleagues with whom Dirks-Edmunds corresponded resided far afield from her research site on Saddleback Mountain in Oregon.

Dirks-Edmunds, a 1937 graduate of Linfield College, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

A History Of Averett College, David Wesley Gray

Master's Theses

The first school in Danville was established by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Mr. J. Matthews, in the year 1802. This school lasted only twelve months and was followed by a procession of others which soon perished for one reason or another. In 1823 the Danville Male Academy was organized and became the forerunner of the modern public education system of Danville. Soon after, a number or schools were established for "females." This study is concerned with only one, the school that is now Averett College.

The physical collection of the Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Papers (see collection information below) includes similar tabulations from multiple classes at Linfield, all documenting insect type and number found. Dr. Dirks-Edmunds compiled her students' research into various reports on her study's progress.

Dr. Dirks-Edmunds graduated from Linfield College in 1937; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

The basis for this Senior Scholar paper is the secondary power of atomic energy- its interweaving effects in government policy and in the attitudes of the government and society toward the scientist. Throughout the paper I have presented a picture of the meaning of science, the scientific personality, the changes in science which are linked with social and governmental changes, and the clash of the government with science, as exemplified by the security hearing of the leading atomic scientist J. This grant proposal, submitted to the National Science Foundation in 1959 by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds, requested funding to continue an ecological study at Saddleback Mountain. Dirks-Edmunds requested $15,570.05 to fund weekly trips with students to the site in order to collect meteorological and synecological data on the forest; she anticipated the project would last two years.

Dr. Dirks-Edmunds graduated from Linfield College in 1937; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.
