The originality of Frederick Jackson Turner can be recognized against a background consisting of evidence of his contributions to the two fields, history and teaching. The stage will be set by a short biographical treatment of Turner. This avenue of approach will lead to an elaboration of Turner's major historical interpretation. This concept will be described and two subordinate facets of his thesis will be examined briefly. The teaching aspects of Turner's career will be illuminated by analyzing the inseparable historian-teacher relationship and, in addition, the quality and lasting effects of his influence will be treated. It was the purpose of this study to (1) present a history of the evolution of basic woodworking hand tools; (2) to relate the tools and methods used by frontier craftsmen; and (3) to compare the structure of modern woodworking hand tools with older tools.

The Political Manifestations Of Ethnocentrism: The French-Canadians In Waterville, Maine, Stuart H. Rakoff

The process of acculturation, seen clearly in the development of the French-Canadians in New England, provides that as contacts to the homeland and ethnic group become more distant and weak with the successive generations, tile individual v1ill become more open to social pressures of the American genre. Politically this means that the ethnic pressures and views which may be prevalent early in the group's American history, will gradually weaken and disappear, being replaced by the traditional appeals of American politics. This article, which was published in volume 39 issue 4 of the journal Northwest Science, describes a study that began in the fall of 1959 and was supported by federal grant G-8779. Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's research focused on the little-known Bronze Beetle and involved several of her contemporaries, both within and outside the Linfield College Biology Department.
