The Genesis Of English Landscape Etching, Richard S. Schneiderman Jan 1977

The Genesis Of English Landscape Etching, Richard S. Schneiderman

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Books on prints fall into two distinct categories: connoisseurship and instructional manuals devoted to techniques and methods. More than in any other area of art historical investigation, the study of prints has relied upon the distinction between subject matter and technical treatment. In the past this arbitrary distinction rarely permitted the intimate combination of theme and treatment for the study of a print as an integrated object. In printmaking, unlike oil painting, representational accuracy cannot be measured by a standard of “perfection of illusion.” The printmaker must consciously employ symbols or conventions of drawing. Printmaking, like poetry, may be said …

Ideology And Diplomacy: The Impact Of Reformed Religion On Foreign Policy And Diplomatic Practice In The First Decade Of Elizabeth I, Warren Stephens Curry Jan 1977

Ideology And Diplomacy: The Impact Of Reformed Religion On Foreign Policy And Diplomatic Practice In The First Decade Of Elizabeth I, Warren Stephens Curry

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the ideological attitudes of Elizabeth’s servants on issues of foreign policy and to examine the relationship between stated ideological goals and foreign policy. The conclusion drawn from this examination is that the men who served Elizabeth shared a basic set of Protestant attitudes that fundamentally determined how they saw other actors in the political universe of the late 1550s and 1560s, and that for the most part their policy recommendations follow from these attitudes. In varying degrees Elizabeth’s diplomatic servants believed that her political survival depended on the survival of a variety of Protestant groups in other …

Jus Non Scriptum And The Reliance Principle, Stanley L. Paulson Nov 1976

Jus Non Scriptum And The Reliance Principle, Stanley L. Paulson

Michigan Law Review

On the Continent, a general theory of customary law has been developed-what I term the Continental theory; it identifies formation and validity as the central issues in the analysis of custom and customary law. Yet the Continental theory, notwithstanding its longevity and continuing favorable reception among international lawyers, is ridden with problems. In particular, as I argue in the following section, the theory fails for want of a coherent position on the formation issue. In the course of my argument, I suggest a classification of the norms of customary law in terms of a generic category broader in scope than …

The Mathematician, The Historian, And The History Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner Nov 1975

The Mathematician, The Historian, And The History Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

The historian's basic questions, whether he is a historian of mathematics or of political institutions, are: what was the past like? and how did the present come to be? The second question --how did the present come to be?-- is the central one in the history of mathematics, whether done by historian or mathematician. But the historian's view of both past and present is quite different from that of the mathematician. The historian is interested in the past in its full richness, and sees any present fact as conditioned by a complex chain of causes in an almost unlimited past. …
