An Introduction To Feminism And Cross-Cultural Body Image In The United States, Laura Darnell
An Introduction To Feminism And Cross-Cultural Body Image In The United States, Laura Darnell
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Feminism is a social movement that aims to end the oppression of women and to create opportunities for advancement of women. There are several types of feminism that have their own set of values and beliefs: liberal feminism, radical feminism, cultural feminism, and womanism. Central to these types of feminism is the call for sexism to cease and for women to have equal opportunity. Embedded within modem feminism is intersectionality, which is described as the effect of multiple oppressions that affect women. Misogyny, the hatred of women, affects the way that women feel about themselves. This is done through a …
Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry
Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Hospitality and health care are clearly connected, both etymologically and practically. Health care has traditionally been delivered in hospitals. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac developed the concept and practice of Vincentian health care, demonstrating a preferential option for the poor. It is important that those who work in healthcare understand and remain committed to Vincentian and hospitality based health care, particularly for the indigent and marginalized. The need for Vincentian and hospitality-based health care remains relevant and necessary in contemporary society, as there remains health inequity, particularly for the poor.

The Calusa And Early Spanish Settlement: An Archaeological-Historic Analysis Of Early European Contact In Southern Florida, Rylan Cromer
The Calusa And Early Spanish Settlement: An Archaeological-Historic Analysis Of Early European Contact In Southern Florida, Rylan Cromer
Honors Theses
In 1513 Juan Ponce de León led an expedition force to explore the western coastline of Florida as part of a mission for the Spanish Crown to map the Gulf of Mexico and determine the capability of the area to potentially support Spanish colonization attempts. Instead, León established first contact with a powerful native society that successfully drove León and his fleet of three ships from their shores with nothing more than bows and basic dugout canoes. For nearly a century afterward, the mere presence of these people, the Calusa, was enough to limit Spanish settlement to the Eastern coastline …

Sister Justina Segale And Americanization: The Making Of Catholic Italian Americans, Mary Beth Fraser Connolly Ph.D.
Sister Justina Segale And Americanization: The Making Of Catholic Italian Americans, Mary Beth Fraser Connolly Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Justina Segale was a Sister of Charity who founded the Santa Maria Institute in Cincinnati. Her primary work was among the Italian immigrants there, and her perspective on Americanization was different from others prevalent at the time. In her view, it was essential to instruct Catholics in their faith in order for them to be good citizens. Indeed, “preserving the faith took precedence” over Americanization. She also did not emphasize assimilation but instead encouraged immigrants to take pride in their Italian heritage. Her Americanization efforts are described. The article also discusses the pressure on immigrants to become citizens and join …
Sister Justina Segale And The New Woman: Tradition And Change In The Progressive Era, M. Christine Anderson Ph.D.
Sister Justina Segale And The New Woman: Tradition And Change In The Progressive Era, M. Christine Anderson Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
M. Christine Anderson discusses the usefulness of Justina Segale’s journal as a tool to teach undergraduates about women’s changing roles in the early twentieth century. Examples from the journal are cited. Similarities and differences between Segale and the “new woman” are discussed. While women’s entrance into the professions of teaching, nursing, and social work is often held up as a new development of the Progressive era, Catholic women religious had long been trained for these occupations. In her social service and educational capacities, Segale illustrates the complexity of women’s roles in this era. Anderson contrasts Segale’s experience and perspective working …

Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein
Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
It is the thesis of this dissertation that Wesley’s “distinctive doctrine” of ‘entire sanctification’—indeed, his entire ordo salutis—is predicated upon a different theological starting point than Luther. Furthermore, Wesley used this vantage point to address a different set of issues than those that faced the Reformer. But while the spiritual torpor and moral decay of eighteenth century England truly were deplorable conditions which needed to be addressed, Wesley’s different starting point led both to some unintended theological consequences and to his misunderstanding Luther’s theology regarding sanctification.

Settlement House Scenes: Migrants And The Performing Arts In Transatlantic Perspective, Yevgeny Goldin
Settlement House Scenes: Migrants And The Performing Arts In Transatlantic Perspective, Yevgeny Goldin
History Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the transatlantic history of the settlement house movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has two foci. The first is the origin of the settlement movement, in Britain; its spread to countries such as France, Germany, Russia, Japan, and, especially, the United States; and the connections — in the form of the movement of ideas and people — among the settlement movements in various countries. The second focus is on U.S. settlement houses as performance spaces, particularly in regards to migrants (immigrants). In that context, this dissertation examines in detail the kinds of activities …

This symposium article discusses an unexamined area of legal aid and legal history—the role that late nineteenth and early twentieth century Jewish women played in the delivery of legal aid as social workers, lawyers, and, importantly, as cultural and legal brokers. It presents two such women who represented different types and models of legal aid—Minnie Low of the Chicago Bureau of Personal Service, a Jewish social welfare organization, and Rosalie Loew of the Legal Aid Society of New York. I interrogate how these women negotiated their identities as Jewish professional women, what role being Jewish and female played in shaping …
The Intersectionality Of Religion And Socialwelfare: Historical Development Of Richmond's Nonprofit Health And Human Services, F. Ellen Netting, Mary Katherine O'Connor
The Intersectionality Of Religion And Socialwelfare: Historical Development Of Richmond's Nonprofit Health And Human Services, F. Ellen Netting, Mary Katherine O'Connor
Social Work Publications
Studying the intersectionality of religion and social welfare in Richmond, Virginia requires going back to the beginning of the Virginia colony. In the crucible of the colony, the religious and social welfare functions of a parish community were one and the same. However, after the Revolutionary War it was just a matter of time before the entire system was disassembled. The process of disentanglement of church and state created an identity crisis in Virginia. In the late 1700s, the emergence of charitable efforts began with leading men of Richmond who tried to address the temporary needs of travelers, followed by …

Guardians Of Chastity And Morality: A Century Of Silence In Social Work, Elizabeth O'Neill
Guardians Of Chastity And Morality: A Century Of Silence In Social Work, Elizabeth O'Neill
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Reflecting the social norms of the late 1800s and early 1900s, much of social work practice aimed to promote moral sexual behavior and penalize deviance. Even following the widespread adoption of psychoanalytic theory in the United States, social work persisted in having a poorly defined role with regard to issues of sexuality. In the 21st century, the profession continues to largely limit its involvement in matters of sexuality to those practice situations where deviance and public health concerns predominate. Limited topical exposure in peer-reviewed publications and the lack of broad-based human sexuality education for social workers perpetuate the invisibility of …

This newsletter began with the Fall 2015 Honors English class. These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. It is our hope that this cumulative research will help readers look at SFA a little differently.
