Critique And Theory In The History Of The Modern Humanities, Paul Jay Jan 2014

Critique And Theory In The History Of The Modern Humanities, Paul Jay

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

What role has poststructuralist literary, critical, and cultural theory played in the making of the humanities, particularly in the period between 1968 and the present, and what role should theory have going forward as we come to terms with the corporatization of higher education, with its stress on practical skills, vocational training, and on measuring concrete learning outcomes? Exploring these questions requires confronting - and linking - two key issues currently at the core of sometimes-fierce debates about the humanities in the West, and particularly in t he US. T he first issue has to do with whether or not …

“The Diffusion Of Light”: Jefferson’S Philosophy Of Education, M. Andrew Holowchak Oct 2013

“The Diffusion Of Light”: Jefferson’S Philosophy Of Education, M. Andrew Holowchak

Democracy & Education

Jefferson's republicanism—a people-first, mostly bottom-up political vision with a moral underpinning—was critically dependent on general education for the citizenry and higher education for those who would govern. This paper contains an analysis of Jefferson’s general philosophy of pedagogy by enumerating some of its most fundamental principles, applicable to both elementary and higher education.

In Harmony: History And Perceptions Of Mormonism In Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1829–Present, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. J. Spencer Fluhman Sep 2013

In Harmony: History And Perceptions Of Mormonism In Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1829–Present, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. J. Spencer Fluhman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since Mormonism’s exodus from New York and Pennsylvania, due to what Joseph Smith described as a “spirit of persecution” in the area, popular perceptions among many locals have been anything but positive. “It is a fact, of which we are not particularly proud, that Susquehanna County harbored such a madman as Joe Smith,” wrote Emily C. Blackman in her 1873 History of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Negative perceptions were perpetuated throughout the twentieth century through continually recited folklore, often printed in newspapers and county histories, and even manifest itself in occasional hostility toward missionaries. More recently, however, popular attitudes to Mormonism …

The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford Aug 2013

The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford

Dissertations

This study examines which texts and religious communities existed that could well have contributed to Muhammad’s understanding of Jesus. The most important finding is that the Qur’anic verses mentioning Jesus’ birth, certain miracles, and his crucifixion bear close resemblance to sectarian texts dating as early as the second century. Accordingly, the idea that such verses from the Qur’an involving Jesus are original productions of the seventh century should be reconsidered.

The research covers a series of significant topics that support these findings. They include theological conflicts in third century Arabia; the interaction between Christian monks, Saracens, Arabs, and Ishmaelites; sectarian …

The Practical Theology Of The General Rules, Andrew C. Thompson Jan 2013

The Practical Theology Of The General Rules, Andrew C. Thompson

The Asbury Journal

The “General Rules of the United Societies” were a central component of the early Methodist movement under John Wesley’s leadership. Examinations of the General Rules in contemporary literature tend to focus on their role in personal and organizational discipline for early Methodists and for the movement as a whole. Yet a close examination of the rules shows that they served a greater purpose: as the practical theological articulation of how Methodists could expect to experience sanctification in the context of their lives. This crucial aspect of the General Rules’ use can be seen by exploring Wesley’s understanding of the means …

1963, Michael W. Higgins

SHU Library Archives

On September 23 2013, as part of Sacred Heart University’s commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Michael W. Higgins provided insight into the University’s beginnings and its promising future. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. Professor Higgins' presentation coincided with the publication of the booklet "1963."

The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

Afterword, David G. Schultenover

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Today many books appear regarding Vatican II. Yet, only very few of them manage to locate this crucial event in the life of the twentieth century Roman Catholic Church against the broad horizon of both its prehistory and its aftermath. This book does just that. In seven chapters, this volume offers a survey of the evolution of Post-Enlightenment Catholicism, in the period spanning from ca. 1830 to the present, tying together the renewals proposed by the first and the Second Vatican Councils. Each phase in this evolution is discussed from a double angle: on the hand from the viewpoint of …

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk Apr 2012

Lonergan On The Historical Causality Of Christ: An Interpretation Of 'The Redemption: A Supplement To De Verbo Incarnato', John Volk

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1958, the Canadian Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) completed a draft of a major text on redemption. He stated that the text was to be an addition to his book De Verbo Incarnato, with the purpose of explaining the historical causality of Christ. The Lonergan Research Institute, Toronto, has produced a preliminary English translation titled The Redemption: A Supplement to De Verbo Incarnato. To date, there has been no interpretation of this text. This dissertation aims at making a contribution towards the remedy of this lacuna in Lonergan studies. The dissertation interprets Lonergan's understanding of the historical causality of …

Restoring Restitution To The Canon, Douglas Laycock Apr 2012

Restoring Restitution To The Canon, Douglas Laycock

Michigan Law Review

The Restatement (Third) of Restitution and Unjust Enrichment brings clarity and light to an area of law long shrouded in fogs that linger from an earlier era of the legal system. It makes an important body of law once again accessible to lawyers and judges. This new Restatement should be on every litigator's bookshelf, and a broad set of transactional lawyers and legal academics would also do well to become familiar with it. Credit for this Restatement goes to its Reporter, Professor Andrew Kull. Of course his work benefited from the elaborate processes of the American Law Institute, with every …

Confrontational Christianity: Contextual Theology And Its Radicalization Of The South African Anti-Apartheid Church Struggle, Miguel Rodriguez Jan 2012

Confrontational Christianity: Contextual Theology And Its Radicalization Of The South African Anti-Apartheid Church Struggle, Miguel Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is intended to analyze the contributions of Contextual Theology and Contextual theologians to dismantling the South African apartheid system. It is intended to demonstrate that the South African churches failed to effectively politicize and radicalize to confront the government until the advent of Contextual Theology in South Africa. Contextual Theology provided the Christian clergy the theological justification to unite with anti-apartheid organizations. Its very concept of working with the poor and oppressed helped the churches gain favor with the black masses that were mostly Christian. Its borrowing from Marxist philosophy appealed to anti-apartheid organizations. Additionally, Contextual theologians, who …
