Writing The Boundaries Of Power: Amicus Briefs And The Judicial Construction Of Presidential Power & Immunity, William C. Henderson
Writing The Boundaries Of Power: Amicus Briefs And The Judicial Construction Of Presidential Power & Immunity, William C. Henderson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation undertakes a critical analysis of the dynamic interplay between presidential power and constitutional accountability, foregrounding the interpretive authority of the Supreme Court and the underappreciated role of amicus curiae briefs. By tracing the trajectory of amicus participation from the Reconstruction Era to modern day, this study contends that constitutional crises have recurrently compelled the Court to delineate the limits of presidential power and immunity. At pivotal junctures, amicus briefs submitted in landmark cases have exerted a profound influence on the Court’s jurisprudence, providing historical context and structural arguments that shape doctrinal understandings of presidential immunity, the separation of …
James Wilson And His Republic Of Happiness, Seth Ryan Hodges
James Wilson And His Republic Of Happiness, Seth Ryan Hodges
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The following dissertation examines the political and moral philosophy of James Wilson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Framers’ theorist whose synthesis of natural law, theology, and Enlightenment moral philosophy grounded what he referred to as the “Republic of Happiness.” It argues that Wilson’s concept of happiness was not rhetorical, but the structural foundation of his legal and constitutional thought. Drawing on Wilson’s Lectures on Law, revolutionary pamphlets, and convention debates, the study demonstrates that for Wilson, happiness meant moral excellence rather than pleasure or material satisfaction. The pursuit of happiness represented both a divine command and …
A Causal-Comparative Study Of Student Enjoyment In Classical Private School, Non-Classical Private School, And Non-Classical Public School Social Studies Courses, Ginger B. Knapp
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative design study was to investigate differences in the enjoyment of history/social studies as an academic subject among high school juniors and seniors educated in classical Christian private school, non-classical Christian private school, and non-classical public-school settings. The study is important because its measure of enjoyment is associated with teaching pedagogy or instructional methodology. Prior quantitative studies have associated achievement with standardized test scores, recommending that future studies explore the link between instructional methodology and achievement. This research study fills the literature gap by employing a sound psychometric measure of enjoyment to examine its associations …

Examining Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’S “Letter From Birmingham Jail” Through A Historical Lens Of Black Theology And Evangelical Theology: Forming A More Perfect Theology, Lisa P. Christian
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A key theological justification for nonviolent resistance in the Civil Rights Movement is “Letter From Birmingham Jail.” This dissertation presents a historiographical and theological analysis of King’s letter, arguing that it serves as a framework for critiquing the validity of Black and Evangelical theologies’ responses to injustice. It engages in a critical dialogue between Black theology and evangelical theology, examining how theologians such as James H. Cone and Carl F. H. Henry interpret King’s claims about justice, morality, and nonviolent resistance within the context of segregation in the 1960s South.
Tracing key theological developments that shaped the doctrines, dogmas, and …

Old World Ranks On A New Frontier: Noncommissioned Officer Command In The United States Military, Robert K. Whillock
Old World Ranks On A New Frontier: Noncommissioned Officer Command In The United States Military, Robert K. Whillock
History Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the development of the United States Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Corps and the regulatory limits placed on its authority. The early American military adopted European traditions that reserved command for commissioned officers and confined NCOs to supervisory and disciplinary roles. Regulations reinforced this hierarchy by preventing NCOs from exercising autonomous command and limiting opportunities for advancement into the officer corps through merit. Over time, however, egalitarian reformers began to question whether these rigid distinctions served the needs of the evolving American military.
The paper argues that foreign military examples and operational necessity gradually challenged the established roles of …

“A Land No One Would Want”: Environmental Activism And The Rejection Of ‘Wasteland’ Narratives In Southern Nevada, Steven Butler
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper traces events within the history of environmental activism in Southern Nevada. The first chapter discusses the proposed high level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. The second chapter examines the closure of the Reid Gardner Generating Station in Moapa, Nevada. The third chapter details the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Groundwater Development Project. Each of the three chapters is linked by common themes within the history of Southern Nevada environmental activism, including dedicated coalition-building and the refusal of “wastelanding” of the region.

Blight Pink: The Reclamation Of Vinegar Hill, Jalen J. Mickle
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Through critical analysis, speculative design, and spatial interventions, this project aims to reveal how the built environment and narrative structures co-produce the concept of “truth,” and how alternative practices can both challenge erasure and validate the Black American experience. Architecture, as a synthesis of form, identity, philosophy, and order, reflects and shapes societal hierarchies.
The Battle Of Tupelo Hospital Cemetery National Register Nomination, Madeline K. Weems
The Battle Of Tupelo Hospital Cemetery National Register Nomination, Madeline K. Weems
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On July 14, 1864, the Battle of Tupelo, or the Battle of Harrisburg as it is also known, occurred within fifteen miles of the community of Palmetto in northeast Mississippi. As the battle ensued, wounded and dying soldiers were transported to different sites in and around Tupelo, including the home of Dr. William Henry and Jane Calhoun in Palmetto that served as the main hospital. The bodies of some of those soldiers still remain on the former Calhoun Plantation, including the grave of D. D. Drake. This public history capstone thesis evaluates this Civil War era cemetery’s history and integrity, …

Set & Drift—Disposing Of Sea Mines In Operation Desert Shield: Developing Eod Doctrine In Wartime, Thomas Bernitt, Jason Gilbert, Michael Dalrymple
Naval War College Review
In 1990, during Operation DESERT SHIELD, the buildup to the first Gulf War, the United States began to amass a naval presence not seen since World War II. The Navy deployed eight aircraft carriers, three amphibious ready groups, and numerous smaller warships to the Persian Gulf alone. Prior to this, no aircraft carrier had entered the Gulf since 1974, because the Navy considered the water space too constricted for carrier operations. It perceived the chief threat to warships operating in the Gulf to be from the Iraqi air force—USS Stark had been hit by two Iraqi air-launched Exocet missiles just …
The Art Of Securing “Strong Places” Overseas—A History Of A British Naval Base In Oman In The Early Twentieth Century, Terence M. Nicholas
The Art Of Securing “Strong Places” Overseas—A History Of A British Naval Base In Oman In The Early Twentieth Century, Terence M. Nicholas
Naval War College Review
Securing a “strong place” overseas without disrupting local politics or agitating rivals is as crucial today as it has ever been. The experience of the British in northern Oman in the early twentieth century has more than academic relevance today.
Road To Brexit: History Of Euroscepticism In The United Kingdom, Jake M. Flowers
Road To Brexit: History Of Euroscepticism In The United Kingdom, Jake M. Flowers
2026 Spring Honors Capstones Projects
Scholars in recent years have attempted to understand why citizens of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in 2016, with many taking interest in the history of Euroscepticism in the country. Previous research on the topic has considered the impacts of geopolitical trends after World War II, Eurosceptical political activity in the 1980s, and longer-term historical attitudes. This paper examines the long history of Brexit to consider these events as a whole instead of as separate parts. As this is a history research project, the primary methodology is an analysis of speeches and primary sources from across …

Conservative Protest And The Cortland Student: How Suny Cortland Redefines Our Understanding Of National Student Activism In The 1960- 1970 Period, Dahlia Spilka
Transformations: Presentation Slides
My project examines how student activism movements at SUNY Cortland in the 1960s and 1970s redefined our understanding of student voice and protest. Focusing on the ten-year period from 1960 to 1970 (often heralded as the heyday of civil rights activism), I analyzed archival documents, campus publications, student theses, oral histories, and conducted interviews to understand how Cortland students understood their role and voice at the time. Culminating in a thesis-length research paper, my research contrasts these student movements with the broader narrative of student activism, signifying how Cortland's history both paralleled and redefined the national protest culture. Cortland's history, …
Let's Play A Lovegame: How College Hookup Culture Came To Be, How It Functions On A University Campus, And The Greek Organizations That Perpetuate It At Butler University, Ella Gray Tucker
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
“Let’s Play a LoveGame” examines how hookup culture functions, is perpetuated, and impacts students on a college campus. By understanding the historical context of its creation, I analyze the multitude of factors that aided it to evolve into what it is today. Although hookup culture is considered part of the undergraduate “college experience”, it is negatively impacting students' mental well-being and their understanding of romantic relationships. With Butler University as my case study, I have come to find that Greek Organizations within the National Panhellenic Conference and Interfraternity Council hold events that enable hookup culture to permeate Greek row which …

Elizabeth Blackwell And Her Heirs: America And Great Britain’S First Female Physicians, Charleigh E. Sprawls
All Theses
This thesis seeks to explore the varying historical themes surrounding America and Great Britain’s first female physicians. Studying 1849-1894 allows for the exploration of not only the nineteenth century, but also the Gilded Age and Progressive Eras of American History. Professionalization played a crucial role in the lives of these women, as it drastically altered the makeup of the medical career, making it more difficult to enter and become qualified as a licensed physician. There were significant barriers to entering the medical profession for these women, including elements like race, class, and most importantly, gender. This thesis argues that while …
