Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges
Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges
Honors College Theses
Navy recruitment posters from World War II are an important piece of American culture. The iconic signage can be seen in antique stores and textbooks alike. However, these posters provide more than just bold imagery and vintage decor. By analyzing recruitment posters as if they were advertisements and placing them in the context of the time period, many facets of American identity can be understood, especially regarding race, gender, and patriotism. These posters, while they almost never stated the specific outlined duties of Naval careers or requirements for enlisting, advertised to readers under the premise that they understood the guidelines …
The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen
The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
This thesis explores how the advertising of coffee has evolved over the past three centuries by comparing the timing of historical events with their concurrent coffee advertisements and the corresponding popularity of coffee and its evolving variations. I have conducted primary research by analyzing coffee advertisements in newspapers, commercials, magazines, and on social media. I have used this research to determine when companies initiated different approaches in order to advertise their coffee. Additionally, I discuss how work culture played a role in the methods coffee producers and companies used to reach their consumers. More specifically, I have identified five different …
Public Education For Democracy: Teaching Immigrant And Bilingual Children As Equals, Luis E. Poza, Sheila M. Shannon
Public Education For Democracy: Teaching Immigrant And Bilingual Children As Equals, Luis E. Poza, Sheila M. Shannon
Faculty Publications
This theoretical essay offers a genealogical analysis (Foucault, 1975) that problematizes the idea of “public” with respect to schooling immigrant and bilingual students. “Public” has been reconfigured in ways that privilege hegemonic whiteness, resulting in policies and practices such as standardized testing, for example, that primarily evaluate, sort, and penalize (Foucault, 1975) schools serving these students. We contend that testing’s pernicious impacts stem from a raciolinguistic project of American identity (Flores & Rosa, 2015). Educators, adapting to the tests (Freire, 1974), cement linguistic and racial hierarchies. Referencing classrooms from our teaching and empirical work, we argue for teacher education that …

Teaching The First American Civilization Recognizing The Moundbuilders As A Great Native-American Civilization, Jack Zevin
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The Moundbuilders are a culture of mystery, little recognized by most Americans, yet they created farms, villages, towns, and cities covering as much as a third of the United States. Social studies teachers have yet to mine the resources left us over thousands of years by the native artisans and builders who preceded the nations European explorers came into contact with after 1492. Several of the Moundbuilder cities grew to sizeable proportions and one in particular, Cahokia, Illinois, not far from East St. Louis became a kind of center for the many peoples inhabiting the surrounding tributaries of the Mississippi …

Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Too often today, students have to sit idly in a history classroom listening to a lecture or reading out of a textbook which is why many people in society (adults and children alike) do not like or understand the complexity of history. This article argues that in order for students to be engaged in "doing" history in the classroom, they need to take part in problem-based learning (pbl) activities using primary sources from the past.
Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
In recent decades states have mandated brief, multiple-choice exams to assess the content knowledge of history teachers for certification. Despite the efforts of college professors to assess student learning through research papers, essay exams, and other assignments, the ability of college students to graduate and become certified to teach history depends on a passing score on a small number of multiple-choice questions. The overlooked story of how standardized testing came to shape the certification of history teachers began at least 80 years before federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Used in almost every state, such exams undermine …

An Examination Of Historical, Pedagogical, And Performance Aspects Of The Cimbasso In Standard And Modern Literature, Jens Mikel Peterson
An Examination Of Historical, Pedagogical, And Performance Aspects Of The Cimbasso In Standard And Modern Literature, Jens Mikel Peterson
Open Access Dissertations
The cimbasso is an Italian low brass instrument created during the nineteenth century for the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Although Verdi’s earlier scores utilized different versions of the cimbasso, Verdi’s last operas Aida and Falstaff employed an updated cimbasso similar to the model used today. The presence of the cimbasso within Italian opera literature undoubtedly advanced throughout the twentieth century because of opera musicians who stayed historically correct to Verdi’s writing. As the cimbasso has gained popularity among opera musicians throughout the world, more specifically, Los Angeles, freelance musicians ultimately motivated film composers to write for the cimbasso in film …

Survey Of Techniques For Producing Blended Images: A Case Study Using Rollins College Archives, Hannah Holman
Survey Of Techniques For Producing Blended Images: A Case Study Using Rollins College Archives, Hannah Holman
Computer Science
The Rollins College Archives are a treasure trove of historic resources relating to the college’s history, and they are often underutilized or overlooked by both the student body and the surrounding community. In particular, historic resources are all too often excluded from work in computer science and related fields. This project aims to bridge that gap by bringing the two areas together. To that end, the goal of this project is to merge past and present by blending historic photos with input of a present day scene in order to reveal changes and juxtapositions of the same scene across eras. …

Using Women’S Voices In Teaching History And Doctrine, Jennifer Reeder
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
In early July 1830, shortly following her baptism, Emma Smith received a revelation through her husband, Joseph Smith, about her position and responsibilities in the new Church of Christ. In the revelation (now known as section 25 of the Doctrine and Covenants), the Lord described Emma as an “elect lady” and charged her to “expound scriptures and exhort the church according as it shall be given thee by my spirit.” The responsibilities were weighty: the 1828 American Webster dictionary defines exhort as “to encourage, to embolden, to cheer, to advise, to excite or to give strength, spirit, or courage.” Likewise, …

Journalism And Human Rights: From The Abolition Of The British Slave Trade, The Aids Crisis, And Injustices Beyond And In-Between, Andrew Henderson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The conception of human rights is one that is enshrined within the shared, collective history of humanity. Encompassing secular traditions, Asian religions and traditions, and monotheistic religions and perspectives as a base for what would come to evolve into universal human rights. Throughout history these traditions and religions have all played a role in shaping where we are at today in terms of human rights. Yet the road which led to a universal declaration of rights was not paved with ease. From the onset of Aristotle, Plato, Hammurabi, other secular authors, and culminating to the end of the French Revolution …

Global Questions About Rent And The Longue Durée Of Urban Power, 1848 To The Present, Jo Guldi
Global Questions About Rent And The Longue Durée Of Urban Power, 1848 To The Present, Jo Guldi
History Faculty Publications
This article examines the forces, public and private, that have exerted political power over the longue durée of the modern city since 1848. The article identifies three major turning points that contextualize the modern moment: the rise of democratic movements of 1848 and their gradual targeting of city governments; the rise of an expert-managed, urban reform state beginning in 1870; and the birth of neoliberal state, from 1974 to the present. The article positions the knowledge of urban history within the rise of democratic, participatory movements concerned with opening, replicating, and publicly analyzing governmental data.
The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland
The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
In 1921 Langston Hughes penned, “My soul has grown deep like the rivers” in his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (Hughes 1254). Weaving the profound pain of the African American experience with the symbolism of the primordial river, Hughes recognized the inherent power of water as a means of spiritual communication and religious significance. Departing from the traditional interpretation of the American pastoral as typified by white poets such as Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, the African American poets emerging from the Harlem Renaissance established a more nuanced pastoral landscape embedded within urban cultures, utilizing water in particular as …

Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau
Tatyana Markus: Hero Of Ukraine, Ariana L. Martineau
Honors Projects
A dramatized telling of the story of Tatyana Markus, a young Jewish resistance fighter from Kiev, Ukraine. Under a false identity, she personally killed dozens of Nazis during WWII. Along the way she lost many people she cared about until she was captured herself. Tatyana has gone on virtually unknown throughout the world, so this play is an effort to spread word about this brave, amazing girl who was only in her early 20s. I think the themes are very relatable to today's society with the struggle of whether to stand up to injustice, or stand by. Especially since she …

The Cape Town Free Walking Tours: Whose History Is It Anyway? The Shaping Of Place And Space In A Tourist City, Allegra Von Hirschberg
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research focuses on the Cape Town Free Walking Tours and investigates the importance of the role that tour guides play in mediating space and heritage. Drawing upon literature surrounding tourism, the tourist city, as well as memory and heritage, this study uses a mixed methods approach, both surveying tour participants as well as interviewing tour guides and managers of the Cape Town Free Walking Tours. In addition, this research also draws from my own experience participating in walking tours and making notes through participant observation. This research shows that tourism spaces are created, curated and maintained through a performance …
