Protection Forests: Intersections Of Law And Science, Jamison E. Colburn Feb 2026

Protection Forests: Intersections Of Law And Science, Jamison E. Colburn

Natural Resources Journal

The national forests of the eastern United States are where and what they are today based in good part on a mistake. When they were being acquired and established in the early twentieth century, hydrology was in its infancy. Yet many hydrologists and their students in government were promising that these forests would provide significant protection from floods. They promised more than they should have. Forests as protection from floods were embroiled in a contentious and prolonged factual inquiry almost immediately thereafter. Indeed, that inquiry would later mature into a distinct scientific subfield, forest hydrology, that went on to influence …

The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd Feb 2026

The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Dental phantoms have been used in dental education since the late nineteenth century. These pedagogical objects – particularly those from the first half of the twentieth century – have today enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the art and film worlds. After first outlining the history and pedagogical purposes of the dental phantom, this article examines what the artistic and filmic attractions to the aesthetics of these objects can tell us about fear, the mouth and the face, and dental education. How and why can a dental teaching tool be scary? Arriving at some answers to this question – reached …

A Crown In Death: An (Expanded) Dramaturgical Approach To The Trojan Women Of Euripides, Stephanie Lester Feb 2026

A Crown In Death: An (Expanded) Dramaturgical Approach To The Trojan Women Of Euripides, Stephanie Lester

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

In the action-packed, visually-oriented market for modern media, some may assume a 2,400-year-old Greek tragedy to be slightly past its expiration date, especially if it features little to no action onstage like in Euripides’ The Trojan Women. However, it is important to remember that literature is lost when the world fails to cherish it, so if a text survives that long, it may be worth another cursory glance. In this case, that glance involved a full dramaturgical study featuring qualitative script analysis of multiple translations of The Trojan Women with related texts to explore context, themes, common literary devices, and …

Asylum On The Prairie, Christain Smith Feb 2026

Asylum On The Prairie, Christain Smith

History Hawks: A North Dakota History Zine

Asylum on the Prairie is a short history zine that examines the rise, abuse, and eventual reform of the Jamestown State Hospital, revealing the contradictions at the heart of early American asylums--institutions founded on care but shaped by neglect and stigma. Tracing the hospital from its 1885 opening through the 1937 scandal and later deinstitutionalization, it highlights how systemic failures persisted until public outrage forced change. Ultimately, the zine reflects on Jamestown as a cautionary example of how vulnerable populations can be failed without accountability and humane oversight.

Writing History In The Digital Age, Taoufik Ait Bouchgour Feb 2026

Writing History In The Digital Age, Taoufik Ait Bouchgour

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

In the digital age, the Humanities and Social Sciences have undergone major changes, affecting the tools, practices and methods specific to each discipline. The digital revolution is similar to that of the Renaissance and the printing press. In history, historians have had to review their epistemological and theoretical concepts. The relationship with sources and heuristic questions have also undergone profound changes. The notion of "digital history" is challenging the certainties of historians in the face of our societies' new need for historical truth and the predominance of memory. Historians need to look to the foundations of their profession. Without this …

Queer Excess And Hybrid History In Elizabeth Cary’S Edward Ii, Kelley K. Glasgow Jan 2026

Queer Excess And Hybrid History In Elizabeth Cary’S Edward Ii, Kelley K. Glasgow

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Elizabeth Cary’s prose history The History of the Life, Reign, and Death of Edward II (1627) follows the fourteenth-century king of England, whose love affairs with his favorite courtiers ultimately resulted in his overthrow and execution. She identifies Edward’s queerness, and his resulting lack of emotional control, as central to his inability to govern England, and as an example of the dangers of excessive emotions for her readers. Because of Edward II’s complicated publishing and attribution history, much of the scholarly effort around this text has been spent attempting to interpret it through Cary’s personal life and political aims. …

Betting On The Future By Re-Discovering The Past: History Of Hospital Infrastructure In Early Las Vegas And Southern Nevada, Aidy Weeks

Library Faculty Research

In the summer of 2025, the library director began reviewing resources available from the University Libraries Special Collections Portal to learn about early hospital infrastructure in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. Using the keyword “hospital”, they reviewed 1,000 records to locate primary resources that could help tell the story of Las Vegas’s first hospital and Southern Nevada early history. In total, they located photos, oral histories, city documents, and newspaper articles, to help put together a timeline of which hospitals, current events, and key figures were critical in establishing a medical presence in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. Forecasting (Nano)Medical Technologies: Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic For Science And Society, Vuk Uskoković Jan 2026

Forecasting (Nano)Medical Technologies: Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic For Science And Society, Vuk Uskoković

Administration and Staff Articles and Research

Successful translation of medical devices from the bench to the bedside is conditioned by the accurate estimation of market opportunities. Because market conditions can change significantly over time, this assessment is challenging in the early stages of technological development. In this study a qualitative analysis of market trends and regulatory frameworks was conducted to assess how transient market conditions influence the development and distribution of nanomedical technologies, using nanotechnologies developed for COVID-19 as the example. The findings demonstrate that the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a volatile market for nanomedical solutions, discouraging private sector investment and …

Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews

Author: Azar Gat

Reviewed by: Colonel Darren W. Buss, faculty instructor, Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations, US Army War College

Azar Gat, the author of The Clausewitz Myth, takes a closer look at Carl von Clausewitz’s On War and argues through looking at historical documents and unpublished versions of the text that there have been misinterpretations of his thoughts. The reviewer believes Gat’s assertions are not earth-shattering but still notes “engaging with [Clausewitz’s] thoughts through the lens of Gat is a valuable experience for readers.”

Institutional And Procedural Aspects Of Military Justice, Frank Rosenblatt Jan 2026

Institutional And Procedural Aspects Of Military Justice, Frank Rosenblatt

Journal Articles

The U.S. military justice system exists to “promote justice, to deter misconduct, to facilitate appropriate accountability, to assist in maintaining good order and discipline in the armed forces, to promote efficiency and effectiveness in the military establishment, and thereby to strengthen the national security of the United States.” It provides for disciplinary and penal sanctions of U.S. military members anywhere in the world. Given the size of the U.S. military and the scope of its operations around the world, the military justice system plays a consequential role in accountability for core international crimes, also known as atrocity crimes. The U.S. …

Showpony, George Theodore Ellington

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The poetry collection Showpony focuses on the real-life experiences of a woman in her twenties during the 1970s, who is treated by psychiatrist Dr. Robert J. Stoller at UCLA in a desperate attempt to make her normal. Mrs. G struggles with homicidal and suicidal thoughts, psychosis, as well as her homosexuality and transgender identity. Showpony examines the ways in which psychology has pathologized these experiences and the ramifications for patients, particularly those who have been publicly showcased as examples of their conditions used to train future students. The collection critiques the exploitation of patients by psychiatrists and psychologists, highlighting unethical …

The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger Jan 2026

The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger

All Master's Theses

This thesis explores the way in which the “Soviet Military-Industrial Complex” that dominated the Soviet Union’s economy in the latter half of its existence came into existence and what forces caused its expansion. The first force was the ideological and strategic beliefs and assumptions of the leadership and military planners which held that the USSR would always be in existential danger. The second was Stalin’s “Revolution from Above” which broke down the barriers economically and politically that resisted the militarization of politics, economics, and society. And the final force was the stresses of World War II which caused the Soviet …
