My Dear Mr. Muir -

I am moved to write to you about a matter which seems to me of great public importance. I came here last August - with a commission as Federal Forest Supervisor of the Southern Sierra Reservation (4000,000 acres or more). Last season 200,000 sheep invaded the reservation by virtue of a temporary concession made by the Secretary of the Interior. I need not relate to you the damage and desolation which these sheep have wrought? You know all about such results from personal …

My Dear Sir

With this please find the "first fruits" of your generous contribution to the cause of the birds or what will be when sent out. This article of Mr. Dutcher's was "set up" in this form, with the intention of sending the same to all the [Agl.?] papers of the country, to serve as "copy"; it is just off the press. Just at this point (after letters had been written, and envelopes addressed to the [Agl.?] papers,) comes a letter from Mr. Lacey (Member from Iowa) saying that the bills in the Senate …

Your letter which I got two or three days ago sounded a little sad I think. I am not surprised, however, that a man who would rush through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona without stopping even for a day to look at some of the most interesting trees in the world should be a little dejected. It is pretty evident that you cannot be trusted to travel alone and that in future I shall have to be your constant companion.

My dear Mr. Muir:-We have received a letter from President Jordan of Stanford University asking permission to include in a book of stories about animals your contributions The Water Ouzel and The Dog and the Glacier from The Century Magazine. As you know, the first of these is included in your book on the Mountains of California, and we hope to include the other in another book of yours yet to be published by us. A, SERIOUS MENACE.

The Express In its Issue of August 2nd spoke of the need for quick and vigorous action to save the mountain growths of this region from utter destruction. Sheep men and campers, but particularly sheep men, threaten the prosperity of these Southern California valleys more and more seriously every year, by setting fire to the forest trees, underbrush and beds of leaves which are our only protection against floods and droughts.
Rains absorbed by mountain slopes are' so much clear gain to the farmers. Those which rush down in torrents, disappearing in the sands of the …

My dear Muir:

I have from Johnson the enclosed note. He sends me one from you and another from Lacey, chairman of the Public Lands Committee of the House, from which it appears that the Senate will have to recede from its action and that the reservations are to be preserved a little longer. Lacey says,-

My dear Muir:

I have yours of the 25th telling me of your efforts about the reservations. You or somebody has evidently put in some good work, as on Saturday all the members of the Public Lands Committee of the House agreed to oppose the Senate amendment wiping out the reservations. It won't do to stop here, however, as a few senators are strong in their determination to break up the whole reservation business and the rest of the Senate is entirely indifferent to the subject.

The central portion is a densely forested and comparatively level volcanic plateau with an average elevation of about 8000 feet above the sea, surrounded by an imposing host of mountains belonging to the subordinate Gallatin, Wind River, Te.ton, Absaroka, and Snowy …

My Dear Sir: -

My family and I were all very gratified by the receipt of your letter of Oct. 6th. I hardly supposed that you would remember me. In the years you have been "traveling wildernesses" to unlock the secrets of nature for the benefit of mankind and writing so entertainingly of the fauna and flora of the far west, it is a little surprising to me that you have carried my name in your memory through them all.
