The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System.Railway Exchange, 9 Jackson Boulevard, Chicago.PRESIDENT'S OFFICE.July 9, 1910.We observe that parties are before the House Committee on Public Lands for permission to build a scenic railway to be operated by trolley on the rim of the Grand Canyon of Arizona. We have been asked on several occasions to co-operate in this or similar schemes and have declined for the following reasons:1st: Because the Grand Canyon is the most stupendous piece of natural scenery in the world and not the least of its attractions is its vastness and solitude; to deface it with …

Yelm, Wash, Jul 8th - 10John Muir,Martinez, Cal.Dear Friend:I enclose this printed slip to show you that I am still harping on that old but genial theme, the mountain, and, seemly, by way of introducing the subject or motive of this letter. When you were, at various times in the past, in the Puget Sound Country, you doubtless learned of the wordy warfare that existed in relation to the mountain name. The rivalry that otherwise obtained between Seattle and Tacoma added to the intensity of this warfare, and it continued down thro' the years since the founding of Tacoma. At a …

June 24, 1910Dear Mr. Muir:I am indebted to you for your kind note of June fourteenth, and shall take a great deal of satisfaction in printing four articles taken from your Journal. I note what you say in regard to spring publication, and having conferred with Messrs. Houghton Mifflin Company, I can assure you that I shall do nothing to delay the publication of your book in the spring. If we were to print your articles in December, January, February, and March, this could be readily accomplished, but as I say, I shall simply take the date settled by your …

Will you kindly return one of these to us with your signature? We had the pleasure of a call from Mr. Burroughs last week, and he told us how you had been tempting him to go to South America with you, but apparently he is more likely to turn his face eastward and cross the Atlantic, if he leaves the country …

June 9th, 1910.Dear Mr. Muir,I ventured the other day -to give Mr. Sedgwick of the Atlantic the opportunity of reading your Journal of your first summer in the Sierra. As I believe he is writing you, he is very greatly taken with it, and is desirous of using several installments of it in the Atlantic as one its features for the next year.We had, of course, planned for fall publication. We are now, however, disposed, in case you agree to postpone it until spring or the following autumn, in order to give the Atlantic the right of way.We believe that …

Editorial Office ofThe Atlantic Monthly, 4 Park St., Boston, June 7, 1910.Dear Mr. Muir:Through the kindness of Messrs. Houghton Mifflin Company, I had an opportunity to take home for a day the manuscript of your first "Summer in the Sierras", and fresh from the delight of reading it, I am writing to ask whether the Atlantic may not count upon the privilege of publishing several chapters of it in successive issues. With your permission we should, I think, plan to take from the manuscript material for at least four papers, which should give to many thousands of our readers an …

Los Angeles, Cal., May 7, 1910.Mr. William E. Colby,302 Mills Bldg.,San Francisco, Cal.Dear Mr. Colby:-Am glad to hear from you. The bitter and long drawn out Pinchot fight may have some little influence against our cause but I hardly think it can amount to much. Probably on the contrary, as far as Mr. Ballinger is concerned, it will cause him to stand all the more firmly in favor of what he honestly believes is right in the Park matter, feeling as he does that all the best public opinion throughout the country will be with him.The preparation for a vigorous …

EDITORIAL ROOMSHOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY4 PARK STREET BOSTONApril 27th, 1910.Dear Mr. Muir,We have read the journal of your First Summer in the Sierra with uncommon interest. It takes the reader out of doors and up into the mountain air, it seems to us, with extraordinary vividness. Dear Mr. Muir: -
I am glad you like the photograph of the Araucaria. You ask about pictures of South American glaciers. The best I can do is to tell you where they are published. The glaciers of the high Andes are best shown and described by Edward Whymper in his “Travels amongst the great Andes of the equator”. New York, 1892.
Another good book on the Andes is Sir Martin Conway’s “The Bolivian Andes”, New York and London, 1901.
The glaciers of the southern end of the continent are …

Our great nation needs far more parks & I think you will succeed by keeping the public attention upon the region by descriptions in the press which you so well know how to write.
