Keep Calm And Carry On: Uncovering The True Blitz Spirit, Lauren Niedergeses Mar 2022

Keep Calm And Carry On: Uncovering The True Blitz Spirit, Lauren Niedergeses

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

First shown by Britain’s civilian population during the Blitz, this Blitz Spirit is widely understood today as a heroic display of courage, cheerfulness, unity, and the ability to “keep calm and carry on” in the face of danger and discomfort. Drawing from radio broadcasts, photographs, propaganda posters and films, and the wartime morale reports of Mass-Observation, I seek to uncover the true Blitz Spirit and how it became an integral – if somewhat mythicized – element of Britain’s modern identity. First, I explore the emergence of the Blitz Spirit during World War II, identifying gaps between reality and propagandistic myth. …

The Impact Of Women On The Life And Legacy Of Mark Antony, Lauren E. Yaple Mar 2022

The Impact Of Women On The Life And Legacy Of Mark Antony, Lauren E. Yaple

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Throughout the life of Mark Antony, the women he became involved with had a large impact on his political career, life, and legacy. These women, such as Fulvia and Cleopatra, used Antony as a means to achieve their own political, economic, and personal goals and were able to gain power in a very anti-feminist society through their relationships with and manipulations of him, affecting the career of Antony in many ways including his politics and his actions as a military commander, as showcased by the examination of primary sources from the late Roman Republic and early Roman empire periods. This …

Lecture Five: What Authority Has Experience Over A Man's Religious Life? [Early Modern Period, Methodism, George Whitefield, John And Charles Wesley], Earl Clement Davis

Origins of Modern Religion, Modern Charity and Modern Labor Problems

Lecture 5 focuses on the early Modern period (1700s), with special attention paid to the rise of Methodism, George Whitefield, and John and Charles Wesley. A connection is drawn between the Anglican Church and the monarchy's social structure versus the Methodist church and a more democratic social structure. Anglicanism was aimed at the upper classes, including the nobility, while Methodism was aimed at middle and lower classes and lifted them up. Davis writes that religious experience can -- and must -- trump creeds as each man has to give an account of himself to God.

All These Things We've Done Before: A Brief History Of Red-Power Inspired Projects, Programs, And Efforts At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln And What They Can Do For Us Today, Jake Borgmann

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The Red Power Movement from 1969-1975 inspired both Indigenous and non- Indigenous students and faculty from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to work for the betterment of Indigenous peoples in areas of affirmation, education, leadership, and language preservation and revitalization. For a time, student efforts by the Council of American Indian Students, faculty sponsored Indigenous education-centered programs, educational outreach through television, and Lakota language courses helped carve out an Indigenous space on campus where Indigenous students could thrive and seek empowerment through education. Conserving The American Man: Gender, Eugenics And Education In The Civilian Conservation Corps, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan Mar 2022

Conserving The American Man: Gender, Eugenics And Education In The Civilian Conservation Corps, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a novel United States federal education programme that enrolled nearly three million men during the 1930s and early 1940s. This public work relief programme provides a case study of the ways that masculine, eugenicist ideas concerning public education evolved from the Progressive Era through the Great Depression. This educational philosophy was espoused by a small group of men – some educators, some not – who sought to remedy what they saw as the failures of public schooling, namely its overly feminine nature. Through an analysis of their public writings and the images that were …

A Vincentian Reading Of The Pandemic: Hope Beyond All Reasonable Expectation, Guillermo Campuzano C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Guillermo Campuzano, vice president of DePaul University’s Office of Mission and Ministry, reflects on the inequities and societal and environmental fragility that the COVID-19 pandemic reveals. Vincentian spirituality and theology have always been attuned to what is happening in the world and finding God’s call to action within current events. They can be used to maintain hope and a sense of God’s presence in the midst of the world disaster and can shape our response to the problems we are facing. Campuzano describes the pandemic’s effects on the university community and how the university’s leadership responded, drawing lessons that can …

Pandemic, Poverty, And Power: Biosocial Ethics Of Global Solidarity For Health, Stan Chu Ilo Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Stan Chu Ilo takes a detailed look at the vulnerabilities of the poor within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and of global inequities in general, with a special focus on marginalized people in Africa. Because of its impact on the social determinants of health, which are explained, racism has exacerbated the pandemic’s effects. For this reason, Chu Ilo explores different definitions of power. He advocates a biosocial ethical approach to health—one that considers how people’s living conditions and behavior on both the global and individual levels affect health care decision-making and health outcomes. He discusses the need for the …

After giving some of the organization’s history, J. Patrick Murphy describes the challenges that staff and service users faced and how both groups (and donors) responded in extraordinary ways. He offers specific stories from different countries that illustrate how “staff shared common Vincentian values, provided leadership, increased communication, and shared resources and best practices across boundaries.” Depaul International members were asked what Vincent de Paul would say of their …

“Learning Not To Despair Of Our Own Age”: The Society Of Saint Vincent De Paul In This Time Of Pandemic, Timothy P. Williams

Vincentian Studies

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul marked the 175th anniversary of its founding in the United States. The Society’s usual works are described. Timothy Williams explains how the organization adapted to continue them during the pandemic, and particularly how it substituted for the home visits that have been the Society’s signature work since its founding. The Vincentian Family and the Society were created in times of political strife, widespread illness, and economic catastrophe, so the words and actions of their founders can inspire and comfort us now. Toward A Crip Provenance: Centering Disability In Archives Through Its Absence, Gracen M. Brilmyer

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Using the records that document the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition as a case study, this article discusses the messiness and unknowability of provenance. Drawing attention to how the concept of provenance can emphasize the reconstruction of a fonds when records have been moved, rearranged, and dispersed, this article draws attention to the ‘curative’ and ‘rehabilitative’ orientations of established notions of provenance. Put in conversation with disability studies scholarship, which critiques rehabilitating, curing, and restoring, this article outlines the theoretical scaffolding of a crip provenance: a disability-centered framework of resisting the desire to restore and instead meets records where they are …

Women Can Step Out Of The Shadows Of Time And Take Their Rightful Place Next To The Men Who Blazed A Trail Through The Wilderness., Bonnie Swenson

Research on Capitol Hill

Bonnie, attending USU’s statewide campus from her home in Orangeville, decided to pursue her bachelor’s degree after retirement and is studying English. In her coursework, Bonnie came across accounts of the Hole-in-the-Rock pioneer expedition in San Juan County in the late 1800s. Most research on this arduous trek has focused on the men of the expedition and the engineering innovations required to build a road into the side of a cliff. Bonnie’s work is unearthing previously disregarded accounts in library archives and amplifying the stories of the 100 women and girls who accompanied the expedition and contributed to its success. …
