Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes Apr 2018

Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

In recent decades states have mandated brief, multiple-choice exams to assess the content knowledge of history teachers for certification. Despite the efforts of college professors to assess student learning through research papers, essay exams, and other assignments, the ability of college students to graduate and become certified to teach history depends on a passing score on a small number of multiple-choice questions. The overlooked story of how standardized testing came to shape the certification of history teachers began at least 80 years before federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Used in almost every state, such exams undermine …

A Time For Change: Transforming A New Generation Of Students Into Historical Thinkers, Lauren Seghi Apr 2018

A Time For Change: Transforming A New Generation Of Students Into Historical Thinkers, Lauren Seghi

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This article describes the advantages of teaching students how to think historically in the classroom. I contend that teaching students how to think historically and "do" history as historians do will help them understand better both the past and the present world around them. It also provides insight into the work of Stanford University clinical psychologist Sam Wineburg and educators and authors Frederick D. Drake, Sarah Drake Brown and Lynn R. Nelson. Especially important is my analysis of Drake's 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-Order document approach. My hope is that this article gives history and social studies teachers a new perspective …

The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland Apr 2018

The Fluid Pastoral: African American Spiritual Waterways In The Urban Landscapes Of Harlem Renaissance Poetry, Maren E. Loveland

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

In 1921 Langston Hughes penned, “My soul has grown deep like the rivers” in his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (Hughes 1254). Weaving the profound pain of the African American experience with the symbolism of the primordial river, Hughes recognized the inherent power of water as a means of spiritual communication and religious significance. Departing from the traditional interpretation of the American pastoral as typified by white poets such as Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, the African American poets emerging from the Harlem Renaissance established a more nuanced pastoral landscape embedded within urban cultures, utilizing water in particular as …

Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan Mar 2018

Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis examines the dynamics of cultural and social assimilation through the experiences of Czech immigrants into Nebraska. The Czechs' long struggle to maintain their ethnic identity has shaped their experiences with assimilation. After a review of assimilation theory, I conclude that the Czech experience with assimilation follows a “straight-line” assimilation model, a progression of assimilation that is complete by the third generation. Their relatively small size, settlement in rural areas, and a strong desire to maintain ethnic identity, as reflected in the formation of Czech language benevolent associations, gymnastic societies, and Czech language newspapers, led to “social” and “structural” …
